Gilmore

Time we had a thread for him and his apparent issues. Seen it mentioned in a bunch of different threads, but what happened against the Chargers?

Was he active/inactive?

All I heard was that he "left the stadium." Anyone have more details?

"Left the stadium" is the best status for him. Hopefully "left the roster" is the next step.

Reiss via Disney Sports:

Duron Harmon: Stephon Gilmore makes it easy for players to be close

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- In a week on the road that's fostering more team bonding for the New England Patriots, it seemed fitting that the first player to emerge for player interviews on Wednesday was cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

His fit with his teammates, through some early-season struggles after signing a rich free-agent contract, has piqued the interest of many.

So how's it going?

Gilmore, for one, couldn't be happier.

"I love it, man. I love playing with the guys," he said. "They get the best out of me. The coaches coach [well]. We just have to keep winning."

That's part of what has the soft-spoken Gilmore so excited, as he's never been 7-2 in his career. He missed three of those wins with a concussion but was officially removed from the injury report Wednesday after playing wire to wire in Sunday's win over the Broncos.

Asked how Gilmore has come back from his missed time, head coach Bill Belichick said, "He was able to practice in a red [non-contact] jersey for a couple weeks and then got the game action, [and] I think all that added up. It's all a part of it. Hopefully, this week will be better than last week."

The same could be said of Gilmore's time with his teammates, as each week is a chance to grow closer. Most of the team's other defensive backs have been together for multiple years.

"I like it," he said of the team's week in Colorado Springs. "Being with the guys every day, we're staying in the same hotel, getting to know each other more. It's good."

According to fifth-year safety Duron Harmon, Gilmore is well liked among his peers.

"The good thing is that Steph makes it easy for all of us to be close," he said. "He's a good guy. He's quiet, but he has a great heart, always around, always talking, whether it's not even about football. Asking about how my family is doing. So I think he's fitting in well. I think we're all close. I think we're also still learning each other, and this week will help us."

Harmon was asked what he learned about Gilmore through watching him handle some of his early-season struggles.

"He's a fighter and he's not going to go into the tank and let anybody dictate how he feels and approaches the game," he responded. "He's going to continue to work and keep grinding, and all you can do is respect that. A lot of people would go into the tank, but you can see he's mentally tough enough to go out there, fix what he needs to fix and start playing productively. ...

"Steph is a tremendous player and a great person as well. He's been out, but he's constantly been in there learning, still trying to work, still asking questions. And I think that allowed him to play [well] last week. He's going to continue to get better. He's still feeling himself out. What is this, his sixth game playing with us? I'm excited to see what Steph continues to grow to."

Here is another article:

https://www.all22.com/new-england-pa..._medium=Social

Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore making it clear he wants to follow No. 1 WRs
Ryan Wooden

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore is adamant that he prefers one assignment and one assignment only as he prepares each week.

As the No. 1 cornerback for both the Buffalo Bills and now the Patriots, he wants to follow the No. 1 wide receiver around wherever he goes. Unfortunately, he was rarely given that opportunity in Buffalo because of the scheme they employed.

In New England, coach Bill Belichick and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia have been more accommodating, but who exactly Gilmore covers on a week-to-week basis is still subject to change based on the gameplan. On Sunday, Gilmore drew Denver Broncos No. 1 wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and excelled yet again.

Thomas did manage to get in the end zone, but had just 5 catches for 44 yards on the night. Most importantly, the Patriots won the game 41-16 and Gilmore explained why he likes having a single assignment after the game to Michael Giardi of NBC Sports Boston.

“I was on 88 [Thomas] the whole game, so I felt good,” Gilmore relayed after the game. “I felt comfortable. Played with good technique a couple of times and was able to make some plays.

“I like going out there and covering a certain guy. … That’s one thing I like to do, get used to that guy, play physical and make plays.”

Gilmore expressed similar sentiment earlier in the year when the Patriots gave him what he wanted and let him shadow Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans. He clearly likes devoting his week to studying one player’s tendencies and amplifies his performance when he knows he’s taking on an elite receiver.

So, perhaps the Patriots coaching staff will consider giving him those premier assignments more frequently from this point forward in the season. It’s certainly seemed to work out thus far.

I wonder if the coaching staff will try to go back to last year when they would have doubles on the #1 and let Butler alone cover the #2

Of course mean that Gilmore would cover the #2

Gilmore didn't give up 137 yards last week.

that is not what I am talking about. I liked the scheme of the #1 corner covering the #2 receiver, and the #2 corner covering the #1 receiver with help.

The time off has done the entire defensive backfield some good. I'm told they had a tete-a-tete 2 weeks ago to straighten out some unfortunate early mistakes and it worked to tighten the group up considerably. They're together and that's a great thing for the finishing run.
