James White extended.... Bill is just killing it this off season...

Just another ho-hum week in Foxboro. Sign Gilleslee, a 5th round tender, to an offer sheet that Buffalo probably can't afford to match, sign record setting SBLI hero James White to a 3 year extension a year before he becomes an unrestricted agent and get Malcolm to sign his tender offer so he's either returning for this season or he can be traded for his weight in draft picks.... This off season has been almost as much fun as the regular season.

White was one of the NFL's most improved players in 2016. Displacing Dion Lewis as Brady's security blanket out of the backfield, the 2014 fourth-round draft pick finished first in receiving touchdowns (five) and third in receptions (60) and receiving yards (551) among NFL running backs. With the addition of versatile Rex Burkhead and the potential signing of power/speed prospect Mike Gillislee, the Patriots backfield will feature a panoply of skill sets to suit each game situation depending on score and down-and-distance.
Prior to White's extension, all three primary tailbacks under contract were due to reach free agency in 2018.
Although Lewis returned from reconstructive knee surgery in November, he was utilized primarily as a runner while White concentrated on receiving duties. White figures to retain that pass-catching role this season, with Lewis, Burkhead and perhaps Gillislee splitting carries as dictated by their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Don't let the Patriots' committee of unheralded running-back specialists fool you. This could be one of the league's most efficient backfields in 2017.

True. Maybe it's a 3 way race and only 2 get resigned. Gillislee, Burkhead and Lewis.

Lewis is not going anywhere IMO. The biggest issue for him is staying healthy this season.

Competition will be fierce. Lewis's avg/carry went down last year. BB paid Burkhead and Gillislee (assuming the Bills don't match) a lot of money. White was just extended. Bolden is STs and is listed as a RB but he's for insurance only. DJ Foster &/or Lewis could be on the bubble depending on training camp and the draft.

I expect Lewis to be on the roster as we carried a lot of RBs last year. What I do wonder is if White's SB performance vaulted him over Lewis. What hurt Lewis last year was not so much the YPC as he was coming off injury but ball security which was not good and Bill will cut RBs over that and getting injured at the end of the SB. I do wonder if they see him as a fragile but man, he is explosive and can take over a game like he showed when we played Denver and in the playoffs vs Houston.

With all these weapons would anyone be surprised by a Gronk trade before the draft?

Of course it did, he was coming off a knee injury, and really only had a regular role in 6 games (inc playoffs).

A year removed, I have no doubt it will be right back where it should be.

Remember it was Lewis, not Blount, who carried the mail in Denver.

For the record, I'm ecstatic White was extended. It shows a ton of confidence in White, that Belichick did not have with Shane Vereen.

And that's because Bill never sits still. If he sees a way, and he's always looking, to improve what appears to be "all set", he's instantly not "all set" anymore

Cheers
