Coming to visit Boston!

Hey Pats fans,

A Saints fan here! Coming down to Boston with my nephew to visit Boston as he is a huge Red Sox fan. We planned it so we can go catch the game Thursday night at Gillette. Should be a great experience! We are staying at a hotel close to Fenway. I was wondering, what's the easiest & cheapest way to get to Gillette? Any other cool things we should try and do while in town? Thanks and best of luck to you guys for a great season!

I think the easiest and cheapest would be the train that goes to the stadium, though I have no idea if the scheduling for that is any different for preseason than it is during the regular season.

That's a common question here. The harsh reality is that there's really no easy way to get from Boston to Foxboro unless you're renting a car. There is a train that runs from South Station in Boston to Gillette Stadium on game days. But there's just one train and it arrives about 45 minutes before kickoff and leaves soon after the game ends. If you miss that train, you'll be staying in Foxboro for the night. That doesn't really leave any time to take in Patriot Place, the area surrounding the stadium.

If you happen to be renting a car, then it's about a 45-60 minute ride to the stadium, depending on traffic. But it's worth it to get there 4 hours before kick off and enjoy the tailgating and environment. The crowd will be very friendly to Saints fans and if you approach anyone with a 6-pack, you'll be most welcome. BTW, the joint practices are open to the public, but again, without a car, you won't be able to get there.

In Boston, a standard summer staple is the Duck Tours. You need to book them in advance and they start not too far from the Fenway area. The Freedom Trail is a good walking experience and is around the Common and Public Garden. There's the USS Consitution, which is being renovated, but still open for tours. Bunker Hill, Fanueil Hall, and the North End, which has excellent Italian Restaurants. You can hop over to Cambridge and take in Harvard Square and Harvard Yard. Boston is a very walkable city and has a lot to offer, especially from a history point of view.

The weather forecast for Thursday should make you feel at home, hot and humid, temps in the 90's. Enjoy the trip.

Thanks guys for the help. I'm still debating on what route to go but I think I like the idea of renting a car for the day to get the whole experience.

Do you guys have a ticket exchange where I can get tickets or should I visit stubhub, etc.?

Thanks again

You'll probably get a bigger response if you post in the Four Ring Circus forum.

I hope you enjoy your stay!

As suggested get a car to go to Gillette, make it a day long event and go early to catch the Hall at Patriots Place - it opens at 10 AM.

welcome to the planet

If you are coming from Boston on a Friday night take the train, or you'll miss the first half (this has happened to me twice).

Given all the other costs involved in your great excursion, it would seem a modestly priced major enhancement to the whole deal.

Hope that that's what you did and hope you and your son had a great time.

Cheers, BostonTim

Hi

Texans fan here. Looking forward to visiting Foxboro Thursday night for a good football game.

I hope to see a Texans win and no injuries on either side.

welcome to the planet and injuries suck so I agree. we can disagree on the outcome predictions- it is what makes football so much fun - rooting for the home team.

We all kind of think of Houston as our little NFL brother, so we really don't want to lose to them.
