The Patriots 2020 Off Season Thread

With so much riding on this off season for the Patriots, this subject needs its own thread. Some FAs will certainly be lost (Thuney, KVN) and players will have to be added at key positions of need (DT, LB, WR, OL - in no particular order). Brady's status could change everything.

This is the place to talk about the off season as it unfolds.

Here's a player who hasn't been discussed but his situation needs to be addressed.

Cap Space=$28,981,086@patscap
Dont'a Hightower's cap number is $12,445,313. Dead money is $2.5M so if traded the net cap savings would be $9,435,313. Pats could lower his cap number via an extension.

$12+M seems way too high from my perspective even though he had a pretty good injury free year. That's a lot of money.

Yes...agreed. He's getting older and usually injury prone.

Miguel's current cap space is a bit more that 29M.
There are other places for significant savings:

Sanu - 6.5M savings if cut
JMac - 4M savings if cut
Gostkowski - 3.8M savings if cut
Harmon - 4.25M savings if cut
Burkhead - 3M savings if cut

And any more smaller savings at the lower end of the roster.

Sanu would equate to a half season rental for a 2nd round flush. Bad business.

Burkhead is the most versatile back.

Hightowers contract is up next season, as much as I like him I think he should definitely restructure.

As for the FA's I would like to see stay. Thuney (solid interior linemen imo) McCourty, Slater, Collins (if the price is right). KVN, I like him, but I don't know if he is going to be worth the money he is going to ask for. He wasn't that great with the Lions and most of our players fade off into obscurity when they leave here and go to another team.

Karras (even though he isn't a C, he did pretty good job filling in, he should be re-signed imo)

Danny Shelton, I think he played pretty well this season, so I wouldn't mind keeping him around for a bit longer.

Marshall Newhouse? Bye Bye.

Phillip Dorsett, I like him but he didn't step up like we had hoped he would. If he is willing to sign for 1 or 2M I can see him staying other than that, he will walk.

I think the Pats look to draft some Tight Ends (I am hoping for Thaddeus Moss and Jared Pinkney personally). So that leaves Watson out in the cold. Although the guy is a friggin beast. He played the remainder of the season with a ruptured achilles? That is a tough dude right there.

Obviously this depends on what Brady wants to for money, if he stays or leaves. Hopefully he stays but if he doesn't then I wish him nothing but the best and he owes us nothing.

This is my .02.

I think Elandon Roberts increased his value to the team this season, so I think they give him a contract.

Nate Ebner, I know he has been injured, but he is a solid special teams guy as well.

Watson was a guest this past week with Shannon Bream on Fox(total smoke). He’s possibly the most well spoken athlete I’ve ever heard and addressed a red hot button topic with ease.

He is likely retiring.

Watson is extremely well spoken. It's a shame that he never really lived up to his athletic potential. 6-3 250 and the dude ran a 4.4 in the 40. All the same, I like Watson and wish him luck after football.

I'm hearing of talks to bring Scott O'Brien back as STs coach. Hope it happens since he was one the very best.

I've seen reports that Jerrah plans to let EDGE Robert Quinn go. He'd look great in a Pats uniform. 11.5 sacks with Dallas' uninspiring front 7 is impressive.

I think our pass rush is ok. We need to be able to stop the run though. We got mauled trying to stop the run. But he and Winovich would be a scary duo.

Yeah, he was awesome in his earlier years with the Rams. If the price is right...

It's not that good...it could always be better.
Agreed, the pass rush could always be better. But it was the bright spot compared to our run defense. I think Jmac, is going to be cut. I think JC Jackson might be the heir apparent. But I thought our pass defense (I kind of include the pass rush into that) was really good.

He went to Duke and wasnt just for his Football Prowess. He has an IQ of 172, which is way past genius level. Scored a 48 on the wonderlic. 3rd highest score ever behind a punter and....Mike Mamula? Ok would not have guessed that one

On the other end of the spectrum:

Frank Gore isn't very smart, but, he's a very good rb though.

The secondary was amazing...the rest of it was, average.

Miguel has the Pats at $64M for the top 5 ($59M if Brady signs before 4PM 3/18/20)
The Pats really aren't in bad shape that way but need to cull some older players with a goal of getting younger and faster. LB & WR especially but DMac and Chung are nearing the end and this is by far the best S draft in many years. For instance, Michigan's Khaleke Hudson, 6', 220, is a talented player & a great prospect to replace Chung. Round projection: 6-7. He's my pick for the Pats at pick #207, 7th rounder. No more 2nd round flyers for S.
