I guess it's better than cutting him, (like they did years back with Adalius Thomas).

Recently, the Patriots made a team-friendly extension offer to Collins, but they were rebuffed. The Pats likely didnít think that they could work out a new deal with the pending free agent, leading them to todayís trade. Of course, New England has a number of key players to take care of, including Martellus Bennett, Malcolm Butler (restricted free agent), Dontía Hightower, and Logan Ryan. Had the Patriots waited for Collins to sign elsewhere in the offseason, their compensatory pick would have come in 2018.
The Browns, meanwhile, have been stockpiling draft picks in unprecedented fashion and they used one of those selections today to acquire one of the leagueís top outside linebackers. Through seven games, Collins has 43 tackles, one sack, three passes defensed, and two interceptions. The advanced numbers at Pro Football Focus have Collins ranked as the No. 9 linebacker in the NFL this year with roughly even grades for his run defense and coverage.
Presumably, the Browns are going to try and lock up Collins on a long-term deal. Cleveland can utilize the franchise tag to keep Collins for the 2017 season and heís probably the teamís best candidate for that designation.
We havenít heard any trade rumors involving Collins this week and the deal comes as a complete shock. No one anticipated that the Patriots would deal one of their best defenders this week and no one expected the rebuilding Browns to acquire a bonafide star prior to the deadline. There has been lots of talk about Cleveland moving key veterans like Joe Thomas, but itís possible that the Browns could continue in buyerís mode for the next 24 hours.

IMO, the Patriots did pretty well to get 3rd rnd comp pick for him (basically a 1st pick in the 4th round) seeing as how he wants more money than the Pats were willing to pay. Too many other priorities relative to how Collins has been freelancing and not doing his job the way BB and Patricia have wanted. BB got what he could for a soon-to-be UFA. A 3rd rnd comp in 2017 is better than a 3rd rnd comp in 2018. That's how I look at it. Elandon Roberts (and possiby Van Noy) will be counted on to take on his position and we've all seen how hard Roberts hits. BB must know Roberts is a hungry player willing to do the job he's asked to do.

I still have nightmares of teams taking advantage of Collins in coverage. That Denver game, those 2 TDs were strictly Collins' responsibility.

Shocker? Maybe but only in the sense that no one saw it coming.
Surprising? Not with the way Collins has been playing lately going back to the playoffs last year. Many of us have pointed out Collins poor play this year.

Collins' effort on that play was pretty sorry. Hightower read it perfectly, Collins should have forced the pulling guard allowing Hightower to tackle the ball but Collins was running himself out of the play into the backfield like an amateur which allowed the guard to put a helmet on Hightower. If that's been Collins' level of play all year moving him isn't all that surprising. Hightower could even have said "hey coach it's either him or me."

Perhaps there is more to the package coming to us but as I said in yesterday's game day thread when he allowed himself to be run over at the goal line, Jaime Collins isn't living up to his previous billing and not to be surprised if BB decides not to re-sign him. It appears BB has already made that decision.
I'm shocked not only with what we got for him, but that we traded him at all.

On the other hand, Collins looked like he was sleepwalking yesterday. Like a totally different guy and his play has been erratic all season to the point where he was having his snaps limited. I don't entirely get it.

I don't think this was just due to the resigning issue. I think there is something going on off the field that the organization didn't want to deal with.

Jesus H. Christ, you never know what's going on, but I never saw this coming.

It would be more like the 97th overall since it is a third round comp pick.

I hope so much that this means resigning Bennett is a legit possibility.
