BIBLE

A little boy opened the big family bible. He was fascinated as he
fingered
through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He
picked
up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had
been
pressed in between the pages. "Mama, look what I found", the boy called
out." What have you got there, dear?" With astonishment in the young
boy's
voice, he answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear.

Ireland Worker Finds Ancient Psalms in Bog
By SHAWN POGATCHNIK, Associated Press Writer
Tue Jul 25, 10:56 PM

DUBLIN, Ireland - Irish archaeologists Tuesday heralded the discovery of an ancient book of psalms by a construction worker who spotted something while driving the shovel of his backhoe into a bog.

The approximately 20-page book has been dated to the years 800-1000. Trinity College manuscripts expert Bernard Meehan said it was the first discovery of an Irish early medieval document in two centuries.

"This is really a miracle find," said Pat Wallace, director of the National Museum of Ireland, which has the book stored in refrigeration and facing years of painstaking analysis before being put on public display.

"There's two sets of odds that make this discovery really way out. First of all, it's unlikely that something this fragile could survive buried in a bog at all, and then for it to be unearthed and spotted before it was destroyed is incalculably more amazing."

He said an engineer was digging up bogland last week to create commercial potting soil somewhere in Ireland's midlands when, "just beyond the bucket of his bulldozer, he spotted something." Wallace would not specify where the book was found because a team of archaeologists is still exploring the site.

"The owner of the bog has had dealings with us in past and is very much in favor of archaeological discovery and reporting it," Wallace said.

Crucially, he said, the bog owner covered up the book with damp soil. Had it been left exposed overnight, he said, "it could have dried out and just vanished, blown away."

The book was found open to a page describing, in Latin script, Psalm 83, in which God hears complaints of other nations' attempts to wipe out the name of Israel.

Wallace said several experts spent Tuesday analyzing only that page _ the number of letters on each line, lines on each page, size of page _ and the book's binding and cover, which he described as "leather velum, very thick wallet in appearance."

It could take months of study, he said, just to identify the safest way to pry open the pages without damaging or destroying them. He ruled out the use of X-rays to investigate without moving the pages.

Ireland already has several other holy books from the early medieval period, including the ornately illustrated Book of Kells, which has been on display at Trinity College in Dublin since the 19th century.

-----------------------------------------

now is it the mormons that believe there are lost sections of the bible?

I hope so because this made me think of this thread.

Not really lost, per say, but more revelations from different people--ala the Book of Mormon. Don't other religions think that the Bible has had things left out or edited throughout time? There were some things that didn't get in there, and that isn't a Mormon point of view because I remember talking about it in my Christian chirch before I became LDS.

I read this article in the news and it was intriuging. About wiping out Isreal and of course all the turmoil going over there now. Repent, I say ye!

j/k

They think it is a fake, right? The article is kinda confusing to me.

It was Plates that were buried bot books like I originally thought

In the beginning of this book, there are 11 witnesses, all weren't Momon at the time, that said they had seen these plates and verified the authenticity of them. They couldn't have paid these guys off or talked them into it because everyone hated Mormons, but loved to kill them.

So, that's when this whole thing started to come together, when he found the buried plates in 1830's.
to quote Jheavner from earlier

I remembered something being buried and glanced through this quickly - wow I retained some information on mormon's and the background of the religion and I becoming one now?

I've been watching South Park for some strange reason lately and happened to catch the Mormon episode tonight. It was hilarious to say the least.

Please don't tell me the part about Joseph Smith reading the plates out of a hat is actually true.

Anyway you Mormon peops should try and catch it some time. Unless you're the type that will get totally pissed off at them poking fun at your religion.

On the plus side for you guys, it was no way near as out there as the Scientology crap. Still pretty out there though. :p

I can take humor, so it's all good. I understand that it seems a bit out there because I thought the same thing up until 2 years ago.

No, it wasn't out of a hat, I'm not sure if they had to do it in the dark even, I didn't hear that. Surprisingly, the first parts are pretty accurate. And it wasn't 4 plates, it was just what the cartoonists drew. I believe it started out as many, many tablets and then it was transferred to the gold plates right before they were burried in the earth for latter days.

Yeah, it may seem a little kookie, but I agree with what the little Mormon boy says at the end. I think it's true, I hope it's true, and if not, I am living a great life because of it and I don't think JC could be mad at someone loving their family and being good to others as the Gospel centers around. JC is who we worship, he is our savior. We study the King James Bible, not some altered book. Yeah we have the B of M, but on every page there is at least one reference to JC and his goodness.

Joseph Smith was the first restored prophet there has been one ever since him in this church. I used to think this was the nuttiest part, but basically all they tell us is how to love more and get along in this mad, mad world. They don't try and get us to worship them or make us believe crazy off the wall stuff. Everything is based on JC and our Heavenly Father.

The Mormons I know, that have been in the church their whole life, are really that nice. Why not? Why do people have to be a-holes? I never got that. I was a "fiesty" chick in my day, but I was always nice, or tried to be anyway. These people haven't really had to face adversity because their familes have been living peacefully for generations and you can really see that it isn't a front when you talk to them and see how they raise their families. I think it's beautiful to see such love.

Nothing wrong with that. The kid at the end had it right when he said even if it was all bullshit it didn't matter because he had a great life/family.

I'd check into the Hat and 4 plates thing. It wasn't that long ago so there are probably some accounts of the events that are outside of the mormon church. South Park usually gets their facts straight when they attack a religion.

I'll ask someone about the plates on Sunday.

Surprised no one has brought this up yet. I'll bet that when the average person thinks of Mormons, they still think of sickos like this guy.

This guy's "family" is really scary. I would even say it is a cult. They showed video clips of reporters just trying to talk to people there, to defend the man and all they got was shouts of "Go to hell!" and "You should hang for this!" Even the "police" there won't talk.

He reminds me a lot of David Koresh, except that they actually had some evidence on him.

Captured polygamist to go to Utah first

By PAUL FOY, Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY - Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs will be prosecuted first in Utah, then in Arizona, on charges that he arranged marriages of underage girls to older men, authorities said Wednesday.

Arizona authorities filed charges first, but Utah prosecutors worked out an agreement to try Jeffs first because they have a stronger case and more serious charges, prosecutor Brook Belnap said.

The Utah charges include two counts of rape by accomplice accusing Jeffs of forcing a girl to marry an older man and submit to him sexually.

"We have the gravity of the charges here," Belnap said, adding that the decision came after a conference call among state and federal prosecutors in both states.

Jeffs, 50, is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a group that broke away from the Mormon church a century ago when the Mormons disavowed polygamy. He is said to have at least 40 wives and nearly 60 children.

He was captured late Monday after a traffic stop north of Las Vegas. He had been on the run for more than a year and on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list since May.

Jeffs was scheduled to appear Thursday at an extradition hearing in Nevada.

Jeffs will be held without bail in Utah. Arizona had set bail at $500,000 another factor in the decision to send him to Utah, Belnap said.

People close to the sect said Jeffs' arrest would probably not change the influence he wields over 10,000 congregants who live mostly in Hildale and neighboring Colorado City, Ariz, on the Utah-Arizona state line.

"I think there's a structure in place that if Warren got caught they'll still carry out his word, and they'll figure out how to keep communicating with him," said Andrew Chatwin, a former church member who moved back to Hildale last year.

Jeffs was caught by chance when a sport utility vehicle in which he was riding was pulled over for having a temporary Colorado license tag that was hard to read.

The thing that really pisses me off about this guy is all the money and flashy stuff he had at the time of his arrest. Mormons are strict tithers. It is adament in the Bible that you do it so, well, we do it. Here's what their money went to:

$54,000 in cash
24 pair designer sunglasses
a brand spankin new Escalade
$10,000 in gift cards

And that is just the stuff that he had at the time. Who know what this guy has at his house/homes.

Maybe they are ok that he has this stuff because it is "helping him in his time of need" being on the FBI most wanted list and all, but from here it looks like he just blows ther money. Does he really need an Escalade? These poor people think they are being led into happiness and the highest kingdom of Heaven, when really they are being led astray.

I hope this helps those people find their way back into the real world. I smell Waco all over this. David Koresh indeed.

He'll be in court tomorrow morning for his extradition hearing. I'll find it amusingly ironic if he tries to fight it. A self proclaimed prophet and man of God, fighting to stay in Sin City.
