I mean, who are the racists here? The policy towards not telling students to "be respectful" translates to:

After a four-hour hearing, the West Point School Board voted 5-0 to terminate Peter Vlaming, a French teacher at West Point High School who resisted administrators’ orders to use male pronouns to refer to a ninth-grade student who had undergone a gender transition. The board met in closed session for nearly an hour before the vote.

Like a similar transgender rights case in nearby Gloucester County that eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court, Vlaming’s situation could present a novel legal case as public bodies continue to grapple with how to reconcile anti-discrimination policies with the rights of religious employees.

The high school in West Point, a town in King William County about an hour east of Richmond, has about 265 students.

Vlaming, 47, who had taught at the school for almost seven years after spending more than a decade in France, told his superiors his Christian faith prevented him from using male pronouns for a student he saw as female.

The student’s family informed the school system of the transition over the summer. Vlaming said he had the student in class the year before when the student identified as female.

Vlaming agreed to use the student’s new, male name. But he tried to avoid using any pronouns — he or him, and she or her — when referring to the student. The student said that made him feel uncomfortable and singled out...

...The hearing drew an overflow crowd, made up largely of parents and students supporting a man they described as a model teacher who does extra duty as a soccer coach and bus driver...

...No one suggested that Vlaming deliberately used female pronouns to refer to the student in the student’s presence, but he did use female pronouns to refer to the student in conversations with others. Witnesses described one pronoun “slip-up” during a class activity on Halloween when the student was using a virtual reality headset. The student was about to run into a wall, and Vlaming told others to stop “her.”

“I can’t think of a worse way to treat a child than what was happening,” said West Point High Principal Jonathan Hochman, who testified that he told Vlaming to use male pronouns in accordance with the student’s wishes...

I can only speculate because the article doesn't mention it further, but my guess is he is referencing verses that say ~ "males are males and females are females, and one oughtn't dress up like or pretend to be the other sex". How that wouldn't be honoring to that person or the other students or to God to indulge that behavior with verbal acceptance.

Janitors, baristas, welders, accountants, engineers — they’re all in demand, said Michael Hicks, a labor economist at Ball State University in Indiana. More people may opt to skip tough conversations and slide right into the next thing.

“Why hassle with a boss and a bunch of out-processing,” he said, “when literally everyone has been hiring?”

Recruiters at global staffing firm Robert Half have noticed a “ten to twenty percent increase” in ghosting over the past year, D.C. district president Josh Howarth said.

Applicants blow off interviews. New hires turn into no-shows. Workers leave one evening and never return.

“You feel like someone has a high level of interest only for them to just disappear,” Howarth said.

Over the summer, woes he heard from clients emerged in his own life. A job candidate for a recruiter role asked for a day to mull over an offer, saying she wanted to discuss the terms with her spouse.

Then she halted communication.

“In fairness,” Howarth said, “there are some folks who might have so many opportunities they’re considering they honestly forget.”

Keith Station, director of business relations at Heartland Workforce Solutions, which connects job hunters with companies in Omaha, said service workers in his area are most likely to skip out on low-paying service positions.

“People just fall off the face of the Earth,” he said of the area, which has an especially low unemployment rate of 2.8 percent.

Some Nebraska employers are trying to avoid unfilled shifts with apprentice programs that guarantee raises and additional training over time.

“Then you want to stay and watch your wage grow,” Station said.

Other recruitment businesses point to solutions from China, where ghosting took off during the past decade’s explosive growth.

“We generally make two offers for every job because somebody doesn’t show up,” said Rebecca Henderson, chief executive of Randstad Sourceright, a talent acquisition firm.

And if both hires stick around, she said, her multinational clients are happy to deepen the bench.

While ghosting in the United States does not yet require that level of backup planning, consultants urge employers to build meaningful relationships at every stage of the hiring process.

Someone who feels invested in an enterprise is less likely to bounce, write Melissa and Johnathan Nightingale, co-authors of “How F*cked Up Is Your Management?: An uncomfortable conversation about modern leadership.”

“Employees leave jobs that suck,” they said in an email. “Jobs where they’re abused. Jobs where they don’t care about the work. And the less engaged they are, the less need they feel to give their bosses any warning.”

Some employees are simply young and restless, said James Cooper, former manager of the Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone Park, where he said people ghosted regularly.

A few of his staffers were college students who lived in park dormitories for the summer.

“My favorite,” he said, “was a kid who left a note on the floor in his dorm room that said ‘sorry bros, had to ghost.’ ”

Other ghosters describe an inner voice that just says: Nah.

Zach Keel, a 26-year-old server in Austin, made the call last year to flee a Texas bar-slash-cinema after realizing he would have to clean the place until sunrise. More work, he calculated, was always around the corner.

“I didn’t call,” Keel said. “I didn’t show up. I figured: No point in feeling guilty about something that wasn’t that big of an issue. Turnover is so high, anyway."

Ive seen it myself. Where my friend works they arent even showing up for the first day with no contact at all.

I have had a couple jobs that I left with little or no notice, but I have never ghosted by the definition of the term. Also, for the time I spent in finance every job I ever did give notice to they didn't want it (kind of standard practice in the industry, and I son't blame them. When people have the power to put hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans on the books, you want them to have a company first mentality).

That being said I think our views on giving notice and just the whole employer/employee relationship are a bit dated. I know when I was in management and had to terminate a person's employment whether due to redundancy or job performance etc we typically didn't give them notice to find another job. I always found it a bit ironic that an employer expects a certain level of loyalty from it's employees that it wasn't willing to extend in return.

The pendulum of the power dynamic has swung back into the favor of the job seeker, after having spent nearly a decade or more in favor of the employer. And having been involved in hiring and seeking during the mid 2000's to the mid 2010's, and having seen 100 or more applicants for single positions and the cutthroat nature of it all, I don't blame the employee one bit for looking out for number one now that the power dynamic has shifted back into their favor.

Apparently nobody gives a rip about leaving on good terms or getting a good reference from their previous employer. Just walk out and don't tell anyone that you quit or are moving on.

I don't know what I think about this. I guess if you are a gas station attendant, a warehouse worker, a cashier, a machine operator, etc. If you are essentially one of many I am not sure what you owe them and to tell the truth, I am not sure they care all that much. But, if you are the GUY. The one that gets called. The one with some responsibility that will sorely be missed AND they treated you well during your employment, you owe them the courtesy of notice.
