Chuck Berry RIP

Many very famous musicians have passed on and they have rightly been lauded. But without this guy, Rock 'N Roll would not have happened.

A giant of a man, another incredible Black musician. May he RIP.

We use legend way too much.

Can't use it enough for Chuck Berry.

I always remembered John Lennon's comment about him, he said (paraphrasing a bit) "If you might ever want to have another name for rock n roll, you might just call it Chuck Berry"

He was truly a musical revolutionary.

A couple of days ago, a great blues master quietly passed away, James "Superharp" Cotton. He was one of the Mississippi Delta greats, having been a protege of Sonny Boy Williamson, played with the likes of Muddy Waters and all of the other original blues masters, and a Grammy winner in his own right.

Cotton was a great friend of my dad's, and he shed tears when my dad passed away last year. He and his wife have kept in touch with me even after my dad died.

His wife, Jacklyn, called to tell me about her loss. My heart broke not only for her, not only because it brought to mind so many memories of the joy their friendship brought to dad, but for all of us because most of the great blues masters are gone now. Sad.

This is my dad with Cotton, literally holding hands, shortly before my dad passed.

Chuck was one of those people you thought would live forever and in some ways he will. The thing about him was he always appeared to be having the time of his life when he was performing. No self-indulgence just a great time.

Your comment reminded me of a great Chuck moment from the early seventies when he was performing w/Lennon and his band which of course featured the supremely talented Yoko Ono on bongo & screech.

Chuck's reaction to Yoko's "contribution" to his song "Memphis Tennessee" at 1:20 in this video is priceless. Being the professional he managed to take Yoko's antics in stride but inside he must have been seething.

Another good one liner about Berry came from when George Thorogood was asked why he never wrote his own songs.

He replied "because Chuck Berry wrote them all so I don't have to".

His music might sound archaic to some, but he had a knack for writing clever songs about fun and good times and, in the end, that is what rock and roll music was supposed to be.

His double-note leads were very unique and influential. Nobody did it better.
