He really sucks
Fells is just as useless to this point. He had a rep as a good blocker, but he hasn't blocked anybody. I don't know if we are any better off.

Generally, TEs fit into two categories: big guys that can block and fast guys that can catch with Gronk being one of the few exceptions to the rule.

We need somebody from category one ASAP. The personnel guys have done a poor job upgrading the position this season. I hope they aren't done trying.

I'm not sure there's anybody left out there. It is a huge waste using Gronk to block as much as we are. Shame.

Fells played 5 snaps last game, in which i didn't notice him. He's just recovered from his injury and that's the first reps he's got since last season i guess. Hopefully it's enough to get him in the game, because i doubt he's going to get bullrushed by a corner.
Seriously, how the hell does a TE stay in the league for his blocking ability when he got bullrushed by a corner.
Would have helped to have Shaincoe as well right now, but he's still more of a receiver

If Dan was more like his brother he'd still be here at FB. Least, I think it was Dan.

He didn't show much of anything and all he was asked to do was block.

I don't know about the first two regular season games, but he got snaps in the preseason and I noted that he looked like a "finesse" blocker and got blown up a couple of times.

We don't need finesse blockers. We need somebody that will put his hat in somebody's chest and move them backwards or at least control them.

Funny that when we signed Oh-oh I assumed that since he was samoan (far as I know) that he would at least be physical. Instead, we found probably the only samoan in the league.

I'm not trying to generalize an entire race, but those guys didn't become a regular staple in the NFL because they avoid contact.

Pre-season wasn't broadcast down here so i only saw 2 minutes of highlights per game, but i thought he was on PUP for nearly all pre-season? Let's just hope we can contain Mario without Gronking him every play.
And god, i know all to well about Samoans and Pacific Islanders, i've been playing rugby against them for years and i still don't think i've found one scared of contact

After the Pats' own extravagant success with TEs over the past couple seasons, the demand has been understandably enormous, so I'm thinking that the "personnel guys" have been taking what they can get.

They grabbed Fells early in FA. Even though he was injured and they knew he'd be awhile rehabbing (which maybe took even longer than they'd projected), he was probably the best available at the time.

Over the summer, they looked at Dallas Clark and tried Scaife (for a day) to get a "temp" for OTAs and camp. They grabbed Ballard off waivers for the future.

They also had UDFAs Brad Herman (injured immediately) and Tyler Urban and that 6'5/230 Roark kid (WR) for development.

They picked up Shiancoe for Camp, which seemed like a good bet at the time, and then HE got hurt right away.

Keep in mind that the FB "restoration" thing was probably intended to supplement the TE position for both run-blocking and receiving and they had acquired a couple guys with very good potential but the one suddenly left football for personal reasons and the other suddenly couldn't stay healthy, even though that had never previously been a problem for him.

They probably only brought in Hoomanawanui on an emergency "temp" basis, chosen over other similarly mediocre FAs simply because he'd worked with McD's line calls previously.

And there almost certainly isn't anybody healthy left out there who's worth a crap. As poor a bet as Winslow was, he was probably still the best available option left on the board when AHern got hurt.

I wouldn't say "poor job", but "execrable luck."

That's a good post but I count approximately 9 TE's (excluding Roark, adding Silvestro) that the team has brought in or taken a look at.

And here we are. Luck always plays a part, no doubt and Ballard seems promising. If Fells and/or Ohoh wants it then there should be ample opportunity this weekend based on the Gronk hip situation.

One of those guys, at least, has got to step it up and show us why the Pats were interested. Knocking somebody down would be a positive development.

Put Mallet at TE.

True story. Former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt recruited Mallet to play TE. That's the reason that he played one year at Michigan. Then when Petrino was hired at Arkansas & DickRod took over Michigan, Mallett went home to Arkansas.
