Wow. The kid made it look effortless with his perfect landings.
Red is a fearless daredevil. Imagine learning to do that in the very beginning.

Very exciting women's cross-country ski race yesterday. U.S. came in fourth and the skier may have a chance to medal in other events.

People who do the long ski jump are crazy! The tower is higher than the Statue of Liberty? Yikes!
Played a hockey tournament at Lake Placid last year.

Went to the top of the ski jump and out on the jumpers platform around the entry to the top of the run.

That thing is up there!!!!

Years ago my family and I were at Lake Placid and walked down the luge run. Can't imagine going down that run on a sled!

I've done it in a "roll cage" luge sled. It was pretty fun, but expensive as hell.

I've done the bobsled run in the summer on a training sled (with wheels)

Oh, it wasn't a wipe out or anything.

Just the guy who was in first place after three runs and basically had a medal in his hip pocket bounced his way down the run, going side to side, and ending up off the podium. As he crossed the finish line he held his hands up in disbelief with a "what have I done" look on his face.

The American was in second after three runs, but he was passed by another guy on the list. They had the three guys on the podium standing together as the final runs were happening, so as a guy finished in the top three he would come over and bounce one of his competitors out of the group.

So after the second to last run, the American knew he was on the podium, probably with a bronze, so when the leader bounced all over the run, the three guys at the bottom were reacting with a "holy crap - what just happened" look. The guy thinking he would get silver, got gold, the American thinking he would get bronze, got silver, and the guy thinking he would be in 4th got a medal, and again, Joe Leader ten feet away thinking "can I get a mulligan here".

Just great, great drama.

Sorry if I mislead.

The Womans snowboard slopestyle was interesting to watch yesterday... if only for how they had to deal with very windy/gusty conditions. feel bad that these athletes wait for the olympics and get hosed by wind. they probably should have postponed but all the alpine events have been getting rescheduled due to wind. hopefully for sky slopestyle (my preferred version) it'll be better.

Seeing that kid just crushing that last, remote chance he had was awesome. I was all teary-eyed seeing his family going nuts. Then, he's shading his eyes trying to see the scoreboard for a long beat and he buries his face in his hands and I figured he must have lost. Nope, he was just in total disbelief at what happened.

That's what the Olympics are supposed to be about, right there. Not the superstars pimping their endorsement contracts. Just some longshot from nowhere doing something impossible at the exact right moment. Fucking gold.
Big YES to all of this. That's why I enjoy watching the Olympics: for the human drama more than the athletic events themselves. Recognizing the dedication that goes into making an Olympic team always inspires admiration in me. What did I do as a kid? Surely nothing that would get me on TV or in the records books. This stuff is SO MUCH BETTER than "reality TV" shows where all the participants have to recommend themselves is snarky comments about each other and running mascara when they break up with their latest BF. I could care less about those broken hearts, but missing out on a medal by a tenth of a second - now THAT's a human moment that actually moves me.

My bad.

I associated agony of defeat with heinous wipeout.

Searched luge crash and had nothing from these games.

Attempting to make some kind of inappropriate innuendo...realized it's curling so I'm at a complete loss...
