Something Seems Fishy...

McD coming back.

Shiano not coming.

Is BB bailing?...

Nothing shocks me, but, it feels like something else will happen.

ESPN had a theory. You should just accept that.

It just seems like the wheels are falling off...

Hopefully things stabilize soon.

I can imagine that there are stressful situations all around there.

To win this much (not all of the time, but, more than not) and be in the limelight all of the time would be grinding.

He said Super Bowl week he's definitely coming back to HC the Pats in 2018.

I interpret that as meaning, yes, he's still our coach, despite all the Wickershamery that's been around lately, and I doubt very much he's planning to go all Broken Arrow on us. It's not really his style to commit and split unless something weird happened, like Bob Kraft selling the team to become the next CEO of the Church of Scientology. He isn't going anywhere.

I think people are getting a bit overly concerned with Matt Patricia's departure.

We can do better. We won a lot of games with him, but I think that aside from the usual criticisms that get applied to the Pats D, his defenses were emotionless, unless confusion can be considered an emotion. He was pretty good, but not a guy that anybody should be shedding salty tears over.

Lack of aggression on defense. Its either players or coaching. But yeah, I am not shook of his departure, nor would I have been with McDaniels. I do think the aggression or player upgrade needs to happen on defense for us to get where we want to be. The Brady miracle can't happen every superbowl. At some point we need to be able to stop other teams.

Butler. Guerrero. McD backing out.

As a whole...it just seems a bit not right.

I don't expect everything to be sunny all of the time, but, there are definitely issues inside.

I disagree.

Bill soured on 21 quite a while ago. Not news. I’ll forever pin LII on Bill but whatever.

The light shined on Alex in Tom vs Time completely clears him for me.

Josh back makes TB comfy. TB right is phenomenal. Great for us.

We’re on to FA and the draft. Defense WILL be revamped. That excites me.

It certainly does not excuse though Alex and indeed Tom peddling **t like an anti-concussion drink. There's a lot of nasty quakery going on there among genuine and helpful focus on diet and rest and pliability etc.

Wholeheartedly agree but there's also the personnel part of the equation which should be mentioned. BB didn't invest enough in each individual player on the defense. For the most part the individual defensive players are jags. There are a few exceptions like McCourty, Gilmore and Chung, none of whom are on the front 7. If I were to ask folks here to name the Patriots' LBs, how many could? It says something to me that a castaway from a competitor only 5 weeks ago became our best defensive player in Super Bowl LII. That's sad but it's also enlightening. It's time for upgrading and rebuilding the defensive front 7. Let's see what our D is next year. Patricia could be a wizard and we just don't know it yet.

I’m going the complete opposite way with Patricia.

The fact he was able to take that cast of characters and after a rocky start turn them into a top 5 scoring D makes him borderline genius to me.

I'm going to ask the question of why, if the Pats are top 5 in scoring, then why in the hell do they let teams march down the field the way they do? I mean, putting the SB aside for a minute, that was their MO all year long.

Bad teams, bad QBs, it didn't matter. Everybody marched on the Pats.

It makes no sense to me that the same D could be 30th in yards and 5th in scoring, so, why?

Is it deliberate to allow the offense to study coverage patterns and rest?

Were we trying to let everybody get good and comfortable and then mindfuck them by stopping them in the RZ to make them come unglued?

Was our personnel so poor that we needed to shrink the field before stiffening?

While I fully agree that points are more important than yards as a metric, it's not like yards just don't matter. Among other things, obviously field position is directly affected the more yards an offense makes. And the more times a team makes it to the RZ then the more FGs given up even if they get stopped. A bunch of things.

Would a team deliberately design a D to perform this way because of some advanced strategic method that is lost on most people of average football intelligence?

I could point out that this is not just a 2017 thing we're talking about. More often than not during Patricia's time as DC this is what we were far more often than not.

He's a smart guy, but I don't think we'll all live to regret his departure. We can certainly do better. For one thing, I'd like to see some sort of emotion conveyed to the troops once in a while. I think when you have a quiet, cerebral guy at the top sometimes it helps to have some juice somewhere on the sidelines.

I actually feel the best I have in a long time about this team both present (this season) and long term. For sure there is a transition of power in place between BB and Josh that will take place over the next few seasons. Kraft has ear marked Josh as that next guy given BB has stated he does not want to coach when he is 70. He will be 66 in a few months. I was always worried about what the transition would be and now feel great that BB unlike Parcells is not going to leave us hanging, he is invested to make sure when he transitions out, the Pats are stable.

We will look to pick THE next guy this year in the draft which also excites me as the last time BB went looking for the heir, we got Jimmy and this draft is pretty deep at QB. We have Josh to develop that QB which also excites me AND of course perhaps the biggest benefit of all is Brady. He has had his best seasons under Josh, 2 rings, and has just come off an MVP year without Edelman. He by far has to be the happiest with these new developments as he will be able to finish his career in divine fashion and also help groom the next QB.

It is funny but I caught just a little of Felger and Mazz yesterday and they seemed so dejected that the Pats STILL have their crap altogether and this Bill OR Brady scenario has fallen apart that they have been trumpeting for the last year. As Patriots71 said back when Wickershammy's report came out, what drives our media absolutely ape is that we never lose our crap. They so badly want this whole thing to end badly like the Cowboys of the 90s and the Giants of the 80s and it isn't happening. It is pure bliss. And of course sticking it to the Colts in the process is the cherry on top!
