That is how much Christianity stands alone. Every single religious system is based on human achievement (humans must do something to appease their god to earn reward/nirvana/heaven). Christianity is the only one that says man can do nothing. God has done everything for him and he attains his assurance through faith. In other words not all roads lead to God on a mountain somewhere. The God of the Bible came down off the mountain to man to make the way for him to be reconciled to Himself.

Second, among all the religious/sacred books written by man, none have the credentials that equal the Bible. As I mentioned in earlier post, 40 different authors with different backgrounds and acumen, written over a 1500 year time period - all with the same cohesive message.

Third, the person of Jesus Christ. No religion offers a personal Savior. No religious figure has ever made the outlandish claims of Christ - the forgiveness of sin, authority over sin, creation, law, and death. And none have a dying Savior who by his resurrection makes the way to eternal life. Also no person in the history of mankind has divided history into two halves as Christ did (B.C. and A.D.).

Fourth, the Bible answers the major questions all belief systems must answer. Where did we come from? What is the nature of the divine? What is our relationship to the divine? What is the nature of man? How do we explain the human predicament? What is the answer to the human predicament? What happens after death? And how do we explain evil? The Bible gives the most complete and accurate answers to the truly important questions of human existence.

There are many, many others but those are a brief (very brief) description of the main ones.
You understand the bolded means not that "man must do nothing" -- correct?

You forget the obligatory "CHEERS BIG EARS!" around the wafer/wine part.

Got me thrown out of church once :/

I have to admit, the handshake near the end of mass can be strangely invigorating.

It's kinda like the two minute warning. If you ever have the chance, watch how everyone reacts immediately afterwards. I can't quite put my finger on it but there's a unique way of settling back in for the two minute drill that I've always found fascinating.

Me too. Most of my family is Catholic so I do have occasion to go to sacrament masses, weddings and funerals. There is a certain solemn and reverential atmosphere to the Catholic mass that I do enjoy. I have a parish not far from where I live and they have a priest who I believe is a closet Protestant. lol. When he speaks, he has such a knowledge of God and an intimacy and he openly frowns on some of the traditions that he feels take away from the work of Christ. At some point, I really want to sit down with him and find out his story of faith.

So, as you have probably guessed by now. I am a follower of an ancient faith in a modern world. I try to say things trying to combine the two. never successful. All I know is every time I step into my church, I feel at peace.

Then I get out into the world and all shit hits the fan.

Not surprising, even atheists can have similar feelings during a service. The practice has been honed over thousands of years (both organically and intentionally) to create such a response. Or perhaps leaving you energized. Or feeling enlightened. And if your church isn't hitting on what inspires you, there's one down the road that will.

It's really no different than what listening to music can do (or, perhaps more aptly, what some artists do as part of their show). And if you don't like that example, more direct religious experiences can be simulated rather easily.

All told, non-evidentiary subjective experience is the worst "evidence" for something external. Our cognitive faculties are so inherently flawed, so weighed down by bias that they simply cannot be counted on for this type of investigation. You can say that practicing your religion gives you peace.... or that holding a belief empowers you to live a better life.... but you cannot say that this life change or sense of peace confirms (or even supports) the truth of the central claims.

I don't, although I still enjoy the show to an extent. I wish I felt something more meaningful, but no matter how hard I try to figure out how the Bible and it's teachings make any real sense I come up thoroughly blank.

I should state that some of it is pretty clear, but the vast majority of these ancient, ficitional stories are either murky or completely incomprehensible and I don't think the issue is my reading comprehension. It's always been pretty solid. I've read maybe a thousand books and the only one that made less sense than the Bible to me was Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. Now, there is a psycho crackpot extraordinaire.

Although I don't believe in the Christian concept of God (or any other religion's), I'm reasonably certain that I'm not God.

I figure as long as people understand that they aren't God, then they're on the right track and Church services will tend to remind folks of that, but that's sort of an ancillary effect.

Sorry to be so negative, because I do have a certain jealousy of folks who have faith in religion. I'm not trying to tear anybody down just because I don't have what you have. I keep looking, but so far nothing makes any sense at all and I can't find a Druid church to take a shot at that.

I've been there. Even wrote a song about finally being able to surrender to the divine.
