Manafort Indicted On 12 Counts In Mueller Probe

Update: The Justice Department has released the Manafort/Gates indictment. The indictment contains 12 counts total, and the big one appears to be conspiracy against the US. They are also facing charges of tax fraud, money laundering and giving false statements.

The two men are expected to appear in court at 1:30 am ET.

In total more than $75,000,000 flowed through Manafort's offshore accounts, according to the Mueller indictment. Manafort allegedly laundered more than $18 million which was used by him to buy property, goods and services in the US, income that he concealed from the US Treasury, the DOJ and others.

According to the indictment, between at least 2006 and 2015, Gates and Manafort acted as unregistered agents of the Government of Ukraine, the Party of Regions (a Ukrainian political party whose leader Victor Yanukovych was President from 2010 to 2014), Yanukovych, and the Opposition Bloc (a successor to the Party of Regions that formed in 2014 when Yanukovych fled to Russia). The two men generated tens of millions of dollars in income as a result of their Ukraine work. In order to hide Ukraine payments from United States authorities, from approximately 2006 through at least 2016, they laundered the money through scores of United States and foreign corporations, partnerships, and bank accounts.

Surprise, surprise. The New York Times is reporting that the first indictment in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia has been unsealed.

And the target is none other than Paul Manafort, who briefly served as chief executive of the Trump campaign last summer before reports about his work for Ukraine's former leader Viktor Yanukovich forced him out. Manafort has reportedly been asked to surrender by the FBI, sparing him an embarassing perp walk.

Manafort's former deputy Rick Gates has also been asked to surrender.

The charges against the pair weren't immediately clear. But they do represent an escalation in the probe that has loomed over President Trump's first year in office.

Gates is a longtime protege and junior partner at Manafort's firm. His involvment in the probe was revealed in the spring. His name appeared in documents linked to a Cypriot firm Manafort set up to receive payments from Eastern European politicians like Yanukovich, who purportedly paid Manafort with money looted from the Ukraine state.

Manafort had been udner investigaiton for violations of federal tax law, money laundering and whether he failed to properly disclose his foreign lobbying.

As we've noted, since these charges mostly stem from Manafort's work before he became involved with the campaign, they leave ample room for Trump to declare victory.

As far as impact to the market - so far nothing - and as KBW’s Brian Gardner explains, none is expected, despite expectations for much sound and fury and told-you-so's from the left.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's indicting former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort or former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn over activities separate from Trump campaign/administration would be "mostly political noise," and would not significantly affect markets.

However, Gardner notes that any unsealing of indictments may dominate the week’s entire news cycle, drowning out coverage of tax legislation and monetary policy.

Now, we watch for the administration's response.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-1...-surrender-fbi

Indictment embedded in the article...don't think I can link it.

EDIT: For those wondering, I am thrilled that it is Manafort. Thrilled that the indictments appear to predate hius involvement in the Trump campain....and, if you know who Manafort was involved with in the time frame the indictment seems to indicate, then you know that Hillary may be do for another "fall down go boom" soon.
I would be careful what you wish for. If you think Manafort stopped all his criminal shenanigans just when he was CLOSER to the seat of power then I suggest that that is wishful thinking.

Manafort is the easiest guy for Mueller to squeeze. They have his balls in a big vice now, and can choose to loosen the grip if he starts dishing dirt. I think this indictment was a 'Paul, we've got your balls anyway, and are starting here. We also strongly suspect more (read 'later' and 'Trump associated'), and if you confirm that we can make the rest of your shady miserable life a little easier...'

If you were a serious scumbag like Manafort, what would you do? Look for this slimy canary to start singing.

Podesta Group retains outside counsel over Manafort-related scandal
By LOUIS NELSON

08/19/2016 05:19 PM EDT

A prominent D.C. lobbying firm has hired outside counsel over revelations that it may have been improperly involved in lobbying on behalf of pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians who also employed former Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

As first reported by BuzzFeed, the Podesta Group announced Friday that it has retained law firm Caplin & Drysdale to investigate whether or not the lobbying firm unwittingly did work for the pro-Russian political party in Europe that also hired Manafort.

Although the Podesta Group was founded by Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, he has not been involved with the lobbying firm that bears his name for years. His brother, Tony Podesta, is currently chairman of the firm.

According to an Associated Press report, the controversy centers around Rick Gates, the Trump campaign’s liaison to the Republican National Committee and a Manafort ally who also did work for the pro-Russian political party in Ukraine. As part of his work for the Ukrainian political party, Gates connected the Podesta Group with the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, a non-profit whose board originally contained Ukrainian members of parliament from the pro-Russian party.

Controversy surrounding Manafort’s ties to the pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians prompted his resignation on Friday, part of a larger campaign shakeup that included the hiring of a new campaign manager and campaign CEO. A New York Times story published last Sunday detailed how secret ledgers discovered in Kiev earmarked a total of $12.7 million in cash payments to be delivered to Manafort. The former Trump campaign chairman said he never received any such money.

Working on behalf of the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, the Podesta Group lobbied in Washington for positions favored by the pro-Russian political party, of which deposed former President Viktor Yanukovych was a member. The lobbying work ended in 2014 after Yanukovych fled Ukraine for Russia, where he remains in exile.

In the statement released by the Podesta Group, CEO Kimberley Fritts said the firm had retained counsel to investigate whether or not the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine had been operating as a front for the pro-Russian political party in Ukraine. Lobbyists are required by law to register with the Justice Department if they are representing in the United States a foreign political leader or party, and failure to register is a felony.

Fritts said that the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine had pledged in writing when it began doing business with the Podesta Group that “none of the activities of the Centre are directly or indirectly supervised, directed, controlled, financed or subsidized in whole or in part by a government of a foreign country or a foreign political party.” Based on that statement, Fritts said the Podesta Group reported the business under the Lobbying Disclosure Act instead of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

“The firm has retained Caplin & Drysdale as independent, outside legal counsel to determine if we were misled by the Centre for a Modern Ukraine or any other individuals with regard to the Centre’s potential ties to foreign governments or political parties,” Fritts said in her statement. “We will take whatever measures are necessary to address this situation based on Caplin & Drysdale’s review, including possible legal action against the Centre.”

Frankly, I would like to see this foreign money scandal spread to Israeli money, Australian money, Chinese Money...you name it.

I think it is naive for anyone to think anyone will go to jail over this, though, at least anyone who's names we know....maybe a couple of fall guys.

In America, Too Big to Jail is The Law. I expect it to hold true.

Still, it will all be great theater.

OK, I guess I have to point out the obvious.

Every charge in the indictment predates the Trump campaign. There isn't even one charge remotely associated with the 2016 election.

Yeah. Total smoke screen by Mueller to make himself seem relevant even though he NEEDS to resign. Like today. Even the lefty press is calling for him to resign.

When will special counsel be appointed to investigate DNC/Hillary/FBI? That is the real Russia collusion story.

Papadopolous met a Russian to set up a Russian back channel at the end of March, which is precisely when Trump ordered a GOP platform change to likely benefit Russia's eventual hacking and was told the Kremlin wanted a relationship. And let's not forget about the June "smoke and mirrors" meeting in June with Jr. and Kushner.

Again, proclamations of unsubstantiated fact by Mazz.

If you had a clue about the way these things worked, you would understand that this is just the beginning. We're into about phase 3 of 5 here in the process. There will be plenty more to come down the line.

Except for the Roger Stones and Sean Hannitys, virtually NOBODY is calling for him to resign, and even GOP stalwarts are saying this process is not to be interfered with.

OpEd pieces?

Aside from Sen. Johnson, and maybe one or two others, is there anyone who counts who thinks he should resign? Opinion pieces are meaningless to me. They are, well, opinions.
