The Evolution of the Patriots Offense: A Must Read

A fantastic read that goes deep into x's and o's explaining the patriots offensive philosophy and how it's evolved over the years. It's long and has diagrams so I won't post it here but it's a definite read.

Interesting.

One thing in there made me wonder however.

First it was with Wes Welker, Randy Moss, and a pass-happy shotgun spread offense. More recently, with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, the offense became a two–tight end–based attack.

It made me wonder if BB's been trying to get that two TE offense for most of the time he's been here.

I can recall many of the media talking heads were claiming that the drafting of Watson in '04 was an admission that drafting Graham in '02 meant he was a "bust".

Could it be instead that he was trying to put together the personnel for a two TE offense and those two guys simply weren't Gronk and Hernandez?

Bill has covetted the two TE offense since his days with the Colts in the 70s.

Not only did he invest two first rounders, but he even tried to do the same double dip in 2006, with Thomas in round three and Mills in round 4. Didn't work out, but it is pretty obvious what he was going for.

Good read. It's interesting how something so simple as terminology can give a big advantage. I remember seeing footage of Jon gruden calling out plays and it personally seemed unnecessarily cumbersome.

That was an excellent read. KISS has never been more true. I wouldn't be surprised if BB's experience with Navy and how the military operates helped forge this strategy.

After the Colts, he was an assistant coach with the Lions in '76-'77 and coached TEs in '77, Charlie Sanders and David Hill, when the duo combined for about 25% of the Lions' receptions, about 33% of their passing yardage and half of their passing TDs in those two seasons.
