Itís never made sense to me.
For the simple reason that the parties are selecting their candidates.

The parties can do what ever they want to select the candidates they put on the ballot in November.

In all honesty, they would be fully in their right to limiting voting to only those who declared membership in their party. There are plenty of places where this is the case.

Back in the day, that was how it was in Mass.

I can recall my mother changing her party affiliation to be able to vote against Father Drinan in the primary because she didn't think a priest should be a Congressman. Her take on the separation of Church and State.
