The best Android box by far is the Nvidia Shield. And the price reflects that a little bit. If I was starting with nothing right now, this is what I would get.

I would stay away from all the Chinese Android boxes. They are usually slow and overloaded, not a good combo.

I currently use a Amazon Fire TV box (not the stick, as it is more powerful and has a wired ethernet connection.) It does not require jailbreaking or rooting to run Kodi, just need to sideload it. It is not very hard. The Stick works fine too, just not as good.

Not an option on Roku.

But regardless of what box you decide to run, I would like to reiterate what BSF said above. You will need to learn a bit on keeping it updated and adding things to it. Every box, even if it comes preloaded, will stop working well before long without some updating. It is not incredibly difficult with any computer savvy, but it is important to know how to keep it working well.
