Be prepared to be offended

For all of you who enter here- it's politics. Politics, especially in 21st century America, is ugly. It's mean, it's nasty, it doesn't care.

You're going to see some ugly, knock down-drag out arguments here. Things are going to get posted that may offend you. I have the ability to be one of the worst offenders that you'll see. Understand this- I don't care.

If you look at politics as Republicans vs. Democrats...you don't belong here.

If you think the difference between a free market capitalist society and socialism is merely a difference of opinion...you don't belong here.

If a conversation or post that isn't directed at you upsets or offends you to the point that you feel the need to say something rather than ignore it...you don't belong here.

Look, I'll make this real simple- on the second header bar, all the way to the left is a function called "user cp". Click on that, scroll down until you come to "edit ignore list". Click on that and you will see a box pop up where you can type a name. In that box, type in "o.z.o."...that puts me on your ignore list and you won't have to worry about being offended by anything I post unless you decide to read it. Trust me, it works great. I've got a bunch of posters on this list.

See ya, sorry won't be able to see your response since you are now on ignore.

Of for fucks sake, I can't do that, just remembered we're friends. :)

That's all well and good, but I don't see the need for personal attacks. Attack the argument, not the person. Competing opinions is beneficial to all and civil discourse goes a long way.

Be better.

Or not. I'm not the king of anything.

TMack is often the voice of reason. Principles before personalities. Hell, I think got that from AA at some point in my life and it is damn accurate or at least, I have found it to be. :)

on-site personal attacks are reserved for a small group of people. Trust me, they've more than earned it.

See, I disagree with competing opinions being beneficial. If your opinion is that we should crash our economy, open our borders and create an equally-shared misery that has killed a documented 100 million + than your opinion is worthless garbage at best and dangerous at worst. Competing opinions and civil discourse only works when both sides possess equal abilities to do so. The Left doesn't nor do they care to.

The Clown may as well close this forum down if it has to lower itself to this type of stuff. No one wants to bother moderating shit like that. I am sure there are plenty of political message boards to visit.

you may forget but the PC was closed, it was only opened because this type of bullshit would no longer be tolerated. one solution is to just close it since I personally am tired of responding to all the BS that comes with it and while I have not spoken to the others, I am pretty positive they are tired of it too.

The other option is just to ban the one or two offenders who can not play within the rules.

this forum is a privilege, not a necessity for the planet, so play by the rules or don't bother posting.

the rule is simple, don't be a Dick, and you can keep the privilege, become something not allowed and you lose it.

remember when it was reopened this was said

i.e. Don't be a dickhead.

I really find some value in this forum sometimes and I get some good info and have made some good friends here and some that have made me have to question my understanding of things even though they are of a completely different mindset. I find value in being taken to task once in a while. Lisa does this for me on FB and we virtually never agree on stuff but she is still my friend.

But I would understand if it keeps going off the rails.

All offending parties have been placed on ignore. Shouldn't be an issue going forward.

I didn't start it, but it's always the second guy in that draws the flag if he's idiot enough to let his guard down. Of that I am guilty, and whereas I could have chosen verbiage a little less inflammatory the sentiment and spirit in which my response was delivered is something that was developed many years ago. I got positive reps for that comment, so I'm not the only one that thinks that.

we are not interested in who is 1st or 2nd. - we read more than the last post

we are not interested in who sad what. - it right there for us to see

we are interested in going forward. - it doesn't need to become threats of uncivil responses.

we are going to now have to moderate this forum more because of these threats.

thanks, we can use the extra pay... oh wait, we do it for free...

bideau 03-10-2020 02:51 PM

We have allowed moderation in this forum to slip and it has degenerated into insults and vulgarities. When this forum reopened, DC crafted the rules which are still stickied at the top. It's time to return to civility.

If an opposing view cannot be tolerated without hurling insults, this is not the place for you. Telling other members to put you on ignore is not the way to handle disagreements. We will no longer allow this place to be a dumping ground for hatred towards those who don't share your beliefs.

The warning stands, there will be no other warnings, the policy is closer to zero-tolerance at this point regardless of political affiliation, regardless of the forum. That goes for you and for everyone else.

Time for people to act like civilized humans (which is a bit of an oxymoron).

Baron Samedi 03-10-2020 03:06 PM

I don't know if this is any help, but my personal policy is ideas and comments are fair game, but I never attack the person or their family or anything like that.

I can be pretty merciless when I attack what I view is wrong or stupid or whatever, and it sometimes get taken personally, but I try never to attack an individual directly...more like "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard, you can't be serious" or something like that.

I also try not to respond to personal attacks, and I could probably do better in that department, but I do try.

Lastly...I'm always as ready to bury the hatchet as I am to dig it up. I move on. Back and forths get boring fast.

Case in point...OPT probably gives me the hardest time on this forum, and even walks a thin line about getting personal...but so do I in my responses. I think and hope we have an understanding and mutual respect for one another, even if not for our conflicting ideas.

I don't want to drive the man off, he's a treasure and one of the reasons I stick around. I like having my ideas tested and challenged. That's what I'm here for.

This is the place where our notions, our beliefs, and our prejudices are to be put to the hammer and anvil and be shaped, changed, hardened, and evolved.

Echo chambers don't do that.

I actually don't hold any grudges or dislike for anyone here, even the ones that have gotten "fed up" with me over the years. It's not personal to me, it's sort of an intellectual drug I need, to debate and argue.

I guess that's all I will say on this topic, except for this one last thing.....I like being able to speak freely and throw a swear word in here or there. Don't SPOIL IT!

O_P_T 03-10-2020 06:54 PM

The subheader on the main page is pretty clear.
Only civil discourse is permitted here!
That doesn't mean some people may not be "offended" by any given post.

Everyone has their own "sacred cows" that if challenged will cheese them off.

I would think that if such a thing occurs, the appropriate thing would be for the two people to clarify precisely what the other person means by their respective posts and if there is still an issue, agree to disagree.

Heck, BSF and I are on good terms now... he and I managed to work it out nicely.
Plus, hes doing an outstanding job on the Girlie thread, so who can stay mad at such a guy?
(Although hes gone quiet recently... hope things are fine).

It's hard to not attack the person when people on both sides are so wrapped up in rhetoric and blind to facts
