Yes. Apparently Ballard wanted Dan Campbell. Ballard has had a terrible start to his tenure. No Luck. No McDaniels. Sloppy seconds now for HC and probably still no Luck.

Dwight Schrute 02-11-2018 08:03 PM

So Indy hired an OC that doesnít call his plays?

Whatís the allure?

Apparently his claim to fame is meeting for an hr with Dougy the day before the game going over the play call sheet.

Just a guess but Reich was once Mannings Qb coach so perhaps Irsay was nudged by Manning?

But you are right. Pederson was the brains behind the Eagles offense but slim pickings for Colts. They interviewed Leslie Frazier. Lol.

They had to interview Leslie Frazier

Mazz22 02-12-2018 06:16 AM

Here is Doyel's take. This guy should really be one of our local writers. I had not realized that Reich was fired 3 times in the last 5 years. Ouch. No wonder Ballard didn't want him. But then the pill popper stepped in ... lol. This is going to be delicious to watch play out as if it goes bad, the evil Pats will be blamed.

Doyel: I love* Colts hire of Frank Reich, and doubters can kiss my asterisk
https://www.indystar.com/story/sport...isk/327265002/

Here are some choice snippets:

Let’s run through the reasons that Reich is the perfect* hire to coach the Colts, and would have been the perfect* hire had he been the Colts’ first choice and not, ahem, seventh. In their first run at making this hire, the one that gave us the Josh McDaniels era, the Colts interviewed six candidates, and not one of those candidates was named “Frank Reich.”

Bothers me a little bit, to be honest, but not because it makes me wonder about Reich. It makes me wonder about Colts GM Chris Ballard. In addition to that little twerp from New England, Ballard also interviewed Matt Nagy, Mike Vrabel, Matt Ruhle and Kris Richard, and scheduled an interview with Steve Wilks that was canceled. Reich was on his list but Ballard didn’t have time to interview everyone, and we all understand, but clearly he prioritized the candidates – and came up with six names he wanted to interview more than Frank Reich. Bothers me, but let’s move on. Let’s move on to why it bothers me.

That’s a lot of people riding the coattails of Foles (and Wentz) into better jobs, or in the case of Pederson, into a Super Bowl ring as head coach. Maybe they’re all offensive geniuses. Odds are, at least one of them isn’t. Did the Colts just hire that one? We’ll see.

The unpredictable history of NFL coaches applies to every new hire, of course, and I didn’t saddle Frank Reich with an asterisk – he’s perfect for the Colts* – because of anyone’s history but his own. For starters, in leaving the Eagles for the Colts, this is the first time in Reich’s career that he has left a coaching staff for a reason other than he was fired.

True story. The Colts fired him as receivers coach, his role in 2011, when they pushed Jim Caldwell’s staff out the door. The Arizona Cardinals fired him from the same job in 2012 when they pushed out Ken Whisenhunt’s staff. Three weeks later Reich became San Diego’s quarterbacks coach, then was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2014, then was fired after two seasons. And in this case, it wasn’t the whole staff being fired. It was Reich and a few other mostly offensive staffers who were fired after the Chargers finished fourth in the NFL in passing yards but 31st in rushing.

Fired three times in five years … and now two years later he’s the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts? That’s a little scary.

So is this: The Colts are turning over their franchise to a man with scant leadership experience. An offensive coordinator for four years, yes – 2014-15 in San Diego, and ’16-17 in Philadelphia – but Reich called plays only in San Diego. Doug Pederson was the de facto offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, perhaps because Reich’s play-calling in San Diego has been called “bland” and “vanilla” and “predictable,” all synonyms for “Chudzinski.”

So who did the Colts hire, the most perfect candidate possible? Or a poor man’s Pep Hamilton?

chevss454 02-12-2018 06:49 AM

At least he has the Eagles offensive play book.

smh.

I went out of my way to watch Jacoby after we dumped him and while the stats weren't great, nor was the W-L record, in fairness it should be noted that he had almost zero chance to succeed in that offense.

He took a ferocious beating on the field, but I think the kid actually did better than could be expected and at times he looked quite promising, imo. He got thrown to the wolves and got shredded in the process. And took a lot of blame.

If we traded Jimmy to Indy instead of him I don't think the results would have been a whole lot different. That was one dysfunctional team no matter who was QBing. Very few skill players, a poor offensive system and zero protection equals failure.

I would imagine Brissett is the one most disappointed that McDaniels did not become HC.

Maybe or maybe not. McDaniel's pretty much admitted he wasn't up to the challenge & there is no shame in that. I think Reich will continue to develop the kid just fine. The main problem I saw with Brissett, & I'm no expert at all, is that he has a very hard time reading the defense. Seems to hang on to the ball because he doesn't know what he is looking at. It didn't help the Colts coaching staff was bad. I pretty much view him as very good backup at best. We'll see.
