Something a little different here. There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of losing Crennel, Weis and Pioli next season. I am curious on where all of these guys rate in people's minds and who you would least like to lose.

Here's my take:

The guy I believe we can afford to lose is Romeo Crennel. This is not a knock on RAC at all. I just feel that with BB running this football team, his hands will be all over that defense regardless of who is coaching. It certainly helps to have a guy like RAC so that BB can concentrate on other areas i.e. salary cap, offense, special teams.........the responsibility he has is enormous but I don't think BB will ever neglect the defense.

There has also been a lot of speculation that Eric Mangini is next in line for this job and they have been grooming him for it. So I would not expect much change in how the D is run. There is also some speculation that LSU HC and good friend of BB - Nick Saban might be interested in the job. My guess is Saban would only take an NFL HC job that is just my opinion.

Charlie Weis runs a close 2nd to RAC as least missed if he leaves. The only reason I put him 2nd is because BB is obviously a defensive coach so a new offensive coordinator potentially could mean a significant change in offensive gameplanning. Chances are BB would be smart enough to look for someone who fits the Weis mold. I have read that they are grooming someone internally but the name escapes me at the moment.

Now to the real point of my whole post.........Scott Pioli is the guy this team can least afford to lose next year. And the reason is not so much what it will do to the team next season but down the road. My fear is that if he leaves, he will take a good portion of the scouting team with him. This scouting team has arguably done one of the best jobs in the NFL the previous 2-3 seasons. Look at the rosters and try to tell me otherwise.

Pioli has gotten recognition and he is part of a great system. If you look at his relationship with both the Krafts and BB, you can guage that most likely the grass will not be greener on the other side should he leave. The only reason for him to leave in my mind is money. IMO, the Pats should pay this guy at all costs and extend his contract to keep him around. The fact is he may not even want to leave but why take the chance with all of these teams starting to look at the Pats success and more and more you hear Pioli's name. It's time to convince Mr. Pioli that this is the right place for year's to come even if not much convincing is needed.

I don't see SP leaving either..... if I had to pick any coach that might leave I'd hope it was weiss over romeo.... I just don't trust his play calling to me he is the weakest link in this chain.

I hate to think about stuff like this, but the reality of the situation is that we have been dang lucky to not have had our coaching staff pilfered after either SB season...
Regardless of how far that our TEAM goes this season, I anticipate that we will lose BOTH Romeo and Charlie to HC jobs elsewhere...
I believe that much of our success can be attributed to the coaching continuity that we have enjoyed for a few years now... From what I understand, it is pretty well written on the wall that Eric Mangini will follow in Crennel's footsteps, when the time comes... I don't know about the plan on offense, but it will probably be "Scar", the Oline Coach, don't ya think?...
As far as Scott Pioli goes--I hope that he NEVER goes!!... He not only seems to have great insight and judgement going for him, but he also is apparently on the same page with Belichick and their working relationship and friendship, makes things appear seamless...
I am hoping that the front office and coaching staff are following the lead of some amazing individuals, like Bruschi, who chose to stay, for the long haul, and be part of building something exceptional in NE, vs. chasing the almight dollar, elsewhere...

I'd like to see a tweak to the policy that requires teams to allow a coach who is under contract to leave for a higher position with another team.

I think a team ought to be able to refuse to allow a guy to go to a team that is on the current team's schedule for the coming year.

If that's too restrictive, they should at least be able to block him from going to a division rival.

Another possibility is to set a formula to reimburse the team losing the coach; draft picks, etc.
