The "Abandon hope, all ye who enter."
Wasn't that above the door or gate going into Anderson Prison?
I seem to recall that being in one of the Civil War prisons.

"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here "
An inscription at the entrance to hell as described by Dante in The Divine Comedy.
Don't know about the prison thing, but this is the original source.

It's originally from Dante's "Divine Comedy". It's the inscription at the gates of hell.
The prison you're thinking of was Andersonville, located in Georgia. I'm not sure if that inscription was there.
edit: Damn you UT, you beat me by a few seconds

You're all a bunch of damn know-it-alls. ;)
I was going to say that it was the inscription hanging over the front door of where I work.
Pretty much the same thing.

The inscription doesn't have to hang over the work door, it's just understood :fire:

I think I would have entered the gates of hell in high school if they didn't make Cliff notes for this one.
