View Full Version : Where are you on the political compass?

Find out here. (http://www.politicalcompass.org/)

Interesting test...though I had a lot of trouble with some of the questions not allowing a middle ground - you either had to agree or disagree.

The chart they use is like this:

http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/images/bothaxes.gif

They give two example charts, past leaders:
http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/images/axeswithnames.gif

And present leaders:
http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/images/internationalchart.jpg

This is where I ended up:

Economic Left/Right: 2.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.21

which puts me in the Libertarian/Right lower quadrant, but not extreme in either, though in neither of their examples did anyone else fall in that quadrant. No wonder I don't like anyone that runs for office ;)

I'm apparently alot more liberal than I thought. I fall around Ghandi and Mandela.

Actual score is:

Economic Left/Right: -5.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.36

A test like this is entirely dependent on how questions are phrased. I truly consider myself closer to the middle on the economic scale. My social scale was definitely skewed by the last set of questions pertaining to sex and gay unions on which I do fall strongly on the liberal side. But my feelings on our justice system are more towards the middle and in some cases are conservative.

But I guess you can now call me a liberal, commie pinko :p

Yeah, actually looking at some of the questions in a little more depth, I think it puts everyone a little more to the left than they actually are.

Left

Well, no surprise here. I'm with Bideau, but a wee bit more left economically and a wee bit more libertarian.

Great thread!

3.25 Economic, 1.74 Social. Puts me almost squarely even with Paul Martin, the Canadian Prime Minister. Makes me wonder why I'm campaigning so hard against him right now :)

Now I'm sure this thing is hosed up since it put me on the LEFT. I guarantee that the author of this thing is way left of say, Bill Maher.

I always considered myself a fairly centrist person a little over on the right wing and I ended up:

Economic left/right - 2.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian - 1.49

Which puts me just north and right of Nelson Mandela in a big blank space.

And to think that I have been accused of being a Rush Limbaugh wannabe.

This is a good post, but I couldn't get thru the whole thing. I'm way too skeptical of these questionnaire's, and the way some of the questions were posed was ridiculous.

IMO you can't define people as being conservative or liberal based on how they stand on the issues. That's more for distinguishing between being a Democrat or a Republican. To me, the spectrum is more a philisophical one.

No doubt, and as NR (oops, I mean Honey ;) ) said above there are grey areas where its very difficult to come down on one side or the other....there can be a lot of variation in the results just based on your mood at the time and how you interpret the question. I think a scale, like 1-10, would have worked better for each answer.

I fall most unsurprisingly right in line with the Dalai Lama. I'm not a Buddhist par se - but it is probably the religion I most identify with.

I found a lot of questions difficult to answer do to the intentionally polarizing nature. Some things need to be in tension, like the balance between inflation and unemployment. On that economic question in particular the lack of an "equal" makes the question invalid.

I don't know about you, but I found the question about whether or not whining wives and snivelling children were enough to drive a man to kill a little disturbing...

LOL - from their FAQ:

When are you guys gonna learn to spell ?

This grievance comes from those who aren't aware that British and American spellings sometimes differ.

We've been at the centre of some rancour, but we're not going to take offence or harbour any grievances. The catalogue of complaints won't colour this organisation's programme. It's a grey area anyway. And we don't want to labour the point.

Damn, now I know why I liked Sharpton and Kucinich so much! I'm just about in their neighborhood (and not all that far from Ghandi, which I can most certainly live with)

I dug up this older thread because I thought it was interesting, and now that we have a political forum, its a good place for it to be, and for those of you that are newer to try out.

I needed to stop in and congratulate all the Bush supporters who have helped my livelihood by casting a surrogate vote for free-er trade. Not that it's anywhere close to where it needs to be, but it's better than what Kerry's voting record indicates it would be.

Almost due west of Michael Badnarik...not surprising to me, as that was who I voted for in '04.

I'm in no man's land in regards to the international forum.

My problems with the test, is that I'm more of a traditional Federalist (ie NOT Hamiltonian), but some of the questions don't allow for a distinction between the federal and the state.

For instance, on many social issues, my personal beliefs are irrelevant to my political beliefs. I believe that they are properly in the purview of the states.

So in the federal context, I would be more centrist and libertarian, while my personal beliefs might be more right and libertarian.
