You know that term of throwing a heavy ball? This kid throws a heavy ball.

uncharacteristically wild with 5 walks, still 8Ks in 5.1. Solid performance.

Physicists are ROFL at that term
Ball weighs 5+ oz.
Ball is moving at 100 MPH
PERIOD
Joe throwing a buck has as heavy a ball as Wunderkid

He got a little wild in the 6th because the mound was junk. He kept slipping with his front leg.

Its a baseball term, its not meant to mean anything science wise. Some pitchers just throw a ball with a lot of movement, which makes it so the bad has less chance of hitting a good area. Its just a baseball saying. Like stealing second base, does not actually mean he grabbed the base and ran out of the stadium with it.:coffee:

physicists also said that curveballs don't actually "curve", it's merely an optical illusion. Leo Durocher invited one one time to stand behind a door at home plate and let of his pitchers beat his head soft with some optical illusions.
Generations of catchers will tell you that different pitchers throw balls that have a different feel upon catching them. I'll take their word for it over the opinion of some pencil-neck who has, in all likelihood, never set foot on a diamond.

A curve balls curve can be seen
A pitchers heavy pitch can be measured.
The weight of the ball is finite therefore it cant be thrown with anymore force given a predetermined speed.
A pitch thrown by a pitching machine or Dan Quisenberry at a given speed is going to hit the catchers mitt with the same force.
One may move more than the other but the force with which the ball hits the glove is going to be the same.

the term "heavy" is in reference to how a ball feels when it hits the catcher's mitt. Has nothing to do with weight of the ball, velocity, or dynamics.
Tim McCarver caught both Steve Carlton and Bob Gibson. He said Gibson's ball was very light, felt like he could almost catch it barehanded. He said Carlton's ball felt like it was made of lead. Science can't explain that, and to try to depend on it to is ignoring the variable of feel.
Like I said, I'll take the word of guys who've played the game at the highest levels then the word of some egghead lab rat.

Its just a term man, nothing more. Its been said for years. Its a abseball thing, the weight of the ball has zero to do with this. You are trying to make it scientific and its not. You might as well tell me a screw ball does not really screw.

All I am pointing out is that a ball weighs X and its traveling at Y then it hits the glove at Z
Comments about eggheads, pin heads and shit heads aside this is a fact.
Baseball lore may have spun a sexy little term but a fact is a fact.
I guess my research in balistics is whats making this more of a discussion than it really needs to be.
Now hocky pucks............ there ARE heavy shots because of the way the puck is hitting the target but a baseball hits the target the same way every time because its round.

But guys who are hitting the ball and catching the ball beg to differ. You ever hear the term he sawed him off? I have heard guys hitting saying the ball feels more heavy when they hit it from this guy over another guy. What ever science you want to wrap around it, thats what they say.

Rivera (best I've seen) saws guys off because of his pitch location and movement.
If they hit that same pitch with the barrel of the bat is going over the fence not dribbling to the SS

actually if the ball was decelerating as it hit the glove as opposed to remaining somewhat constant or accelerating when it hit the glove the feel would be different thus creating the heavy ball feel as it drove deeper into the glove upon striking it

I think this is part of it, some guys have diferent movement on the ball.
I'm a lefty, the ball just did stuff when I threw it..some guys throw like its going thru the cathcers mitt.

All balls are decelerating when they hit the glove
Lefties do have a "natural" curve of sorts, my brother had a sick one

Lefties do have a "natural" curve of sorts, my brother had a sick oneI know but the rate of deceleration is different for each pitcher or all balls when thrown would land in the exact same spot each time
and as a lefty all I can say is I hit every lefty hitter I ever faced - usually about shoulder high too

I split these up because you are completely wrong in your assessment. Different pitches travel at different velocities, giving you the light vs. heavy feel.
Also, size, weight, and shape have nothing to do with how heavy or light a hockey shot is. A slap shot is heavier then a wrist shot because it travels at a different velocity

Obvioulsy a slap shot is harder.........depending on who is shooting.
Think in terms of how the puck hits the target
Flat
On edge
I'd rather take a puck off the noggin flat than on edge
(Speaking from personal experience, neither is really a good option but flat was better)

Rate of deceleration for a thrown object (baseball) begins the instant the ball leaves the pitchers hand.
There isnt enough height on a pitchers mound to have gravity be much of an effect on this.
Balls land in different spots due to location, movement, spin etc.

Balls land in different spots due to location, movement, spin etc.so it is possible that different pitchers then would have different things happen to the ball once it leaves their hand, that maybe the force behind different balls from different pitchers is unique to that specific pitcher, this causing the rate of deceleration to be a different rate, making the mass that hits the catchers glove feel unlike the other pitchers - thus giving the impression of a heavy ball
