Well he did say "try" to close it out the first time he said it. If he left it at that it would have been fine. Then he followed up with we will close it out, not smart but apparently the C's are the most trash talking team in the league. I hardly doubt what he said in an interview is any more motivating than what they say on the floor

So getting beat at home twice is not enough to rally around, but they will now cause Pierce said something? I would think going down 0-2 with two home losses should have done that. Its one thing to get motivated, but like I said, are they going to try harder now? If they were not trying hard already, then they have issues that nothing pierce is going to say would change.

The Magic aren't the Patriots and Van Gundy is not BB. The thing I really don't like about it is that it puts added pressure on your own team, not so much giving the other team motivation.

I thought Pierce said more than whats mentioned, it was a big topic on the radio this a.m.I've always thought that the "Bulletin Board" concept relates to something slightly different than just motivation per se. Visualization is a critical element in life. It's been pretty clearly established that if you can visualize a result you are far more likely to achieve said result.
I also think that if you can "visualize" your hatred or your anger or your frustration, even if you wish, your motivation, you may well be better able to act more effectively against or in respone to it.
I don't think it's a NEW motivation, but rather a clearer face and name to hang on it.
If that makes any sense.
Cheers, BostonTim

isn't it ridiculous how people get all up in arms over shit like this? I have even MORE respect for Pierce for saying this (and that wasn't easy to accomplish).
...go back 25 years, put Larry Bird in the same situation, and I guarantee that what would come out of his mouth would make what Pierce said sound like a concession speech.

Sure, go ahead and act the bomb over a dunk or a tackle but not if you are losing by 14

This was part of the story this morning on the radio, talking about Pierce. he was said to refer to getting the brooms ready and such...
Text size – + Tweeting to the bottom of it
E-mail|Link|Comments (9) Posted by Eric Wilbur, Boston.com Staff May 19, 2010 08:03 AM
The Orlando Sentinel didn't get the message.
While the rest of the world now knows that Paul Pierce's Twitter account was hacked last night - confirmed early this morning by Athlete Interactive, Pierce's digital branding agency - with an imposter posting, "Anybody got a BROOM?" following the Celtics' 95-92 win in Orlando, Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi's piece this morning seemingly still presents the tweet as fact.
Later in the column, when referring to the belief that the Magic were the younger, fresher team heading into the series, Bianchi writes, "Don't believe everything you read or hear."
Sound advice.
Today, at about 3 a.m., Athlete Interactive tweeted, "Tweets on May 18, 2010 from @paulpierce34 are not Paul Pierce. The account was hacked. Twitter has been notified and is investigating."
Meanwhile, Pro Basketball Talk did a bang-up job breaking down why the tweet was indeed a hack job: "There are numerous pieces of evidence that point to this being something aside from the mouthpiece of Pierce himself. The account is verified and does belong to Paul, but the bizarre online trash talk seems to have come from nowhere, contradicts Pierce and the Celtics' "taking care of business" company line in favor of a more brash approach, and while all of Pierce's other tweets were submitted via text or Twitter's web site, the tweets in question were sent in using a non-browser agent called Twitterific. Ladies and gentlemen, I'd say this is a hack."
I also use Twitterific, and would like to point out that my account was also apparently hacked when I picked the Bruins in 6.

as has been said-
this is the Eastern Conference Finals. A trip to the Finals is at stake. If you outside motivation, you're in the wrong line of work.
Pierce originally said "TRY" to close out at home...here's some food for thought-
the man just finished playing a long, grueling, professional basketball playoff game. Not generally a situation where you are completely in control of all of your faculties in an interview. Anybody who's played a competitive sport beyond rec-league level competition will tell you that your brain and mouth aren't always completely in tune under those circumstances.

I CAN'T HOLD IT IN ANY LONGER!!!!!!
I agree with OZO and midgar. :coffee:
Seriously, as pointed out, he initially said "try". He's excited to come off of two huge victories on the road against a team that hadn't lost a playoff game this season and hadn't lost back-to-back games at home this season. He sunk two free-throws in the waning minutes of each game which has been an achillles heel of his throughout his career (except in the LA series in '08). The man is on a roll and his confidence is soaring. This is bad, why?

here's the deal-
you can be motivated all you want. You still have to be able to execute. Generally, teams that talk a lot of shit do it to psyche themselves up because there is generally a piece that they are missing. Not so in every case, certainly not so in the case of the Celtics. All things being equal and both teams bringing their 'A' game...the Celtics are the better team.
...you guys must all be a lot younger then me, because, as I said before, you must have missed all the shit Bird used to talk. The guy has on many occasions been referred to as the biggest trash talker ever in any sport.

The patriots didnt get their ass handed to them twice. If this happened before the series it might be different. Also, football is a sport more determined by emotion than basketball. Sometimes you are just not good enough to win, and no amount of motivation is going to change that. In football, you can hit, you can tackle, you can finish out blocks, in basketball you are shooting, you cannot shoot the ball harder at the basket.

You are thinking of basketball the same way as football and its not. Football is a game played a lot off emotion, basketball is not played as much off emotion as it is skill. Its a non contact sport for the most part. You cannot make shot falls better if you are motivated.

Maybe because he doesn't think the Magic suck just that C's are better?
Before the season started both Pierce and KG said they were going to win it all. That's just who they are and they're not going to change just because they're closer to that goal. You're basing him motivating the Magic because it was said to the media, but they are very well known in the league as being the most trash talking team on the court. So what's the difference? Because America heard it now the Magic are going to take offense and play harder? I said it puts more pressure on themselves, but maybe it motivates them even more by having to back it up, have you ever thought of that? I say go with whatever works for ya. Garnett said they had to win game 6 last series and they did, you can't put much more pressure on yourselves than that. I might not like, you may not like it, but that's who they are and it seems to work for them

Fwiw, I think this wasn't the best -- why give the Magic ANYTHING -- but I also think that we tend to WAY over-analyze this stuff.
I mean, can the Magic really be more motivated than they already are? They're down 0-2 in a series after having rode through the playoffs and in a year in which they have sufficient talent to win it all. You can't get more fundamental motivation than that.
I didn't like Ray Allen's lecturing comments to Paul through the press about being a classy organzation, though. The classy thing would have been to talk to him behind closed doors.
I don't think any of this stuff matters, though. The Cs will win on Saturday night if they play better...both teams will be fully pumped and jacked for the game, no matter who says what before it starts.

I pretty much agree with this 100%..

Yeah about sums it up. Thing is though, these guys are asked questions on the spot, about 5 seconds after battling another team, emotions are running high, so to expect some auto PC comment is a little bit naive.

I think it's safe to say bulletin board material has no effect on the Magic.

Yeah it seems that motivation didn't really matter much to the magic.
