View Full Version : Who will be seeing Avatar this weekend?

I have been looking at the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. They have gone down in the last few days from 84% positive to 82% positive.
Everyone agrees that the technology of the movie is spectacular.
The negative reviews (and plenty of the positive reviews) think the story is weak (ranging from somewhat weak to really really bad).
In addition, I here about some customers getting sick and hurling with the 3 D stuff and visual effects. (I nearly did that once at that star wars thingy at DisneyWorld.)
It looks (sounds?) amazing but anyway - I need reviews from people I can rely on.
Let us know!
Cheers, BostonTim

The only way having every movie channel on the planet works (and is worth it) is if you do not go to the theaters.
So I'll be watching when it's on HBO!
I'd appreciate if you people wouldn't talk about this movie or give away any spoilers for the next 18-24 months.
Thanks, everyone.

We just got our big, annual Swiss Colony order today (beef sticks, cheese), so my wife is going to run over to BJ's to grab crackers and cocoa mix.
I'm looking forward to getting out and doing some sledding on Sunday with O.Z.O. Jr. and his friends.

Netflix. And more Netflix. Netflix DVDs, Netflix streaming...Netflix.
Movies on the laptop in bed = win.
Ability to go directly from closing credits to "bundling" = big win.
Ability to interrupt boring movie with wandering hands under the covers to get out of watching stupid crap and get sex as an added bonus = Epic Win.
Avatar looks to be disappointing, but looks like some solid eye candy fersher. But the 3-D thing is always disappointing, and typically it's only the first 10 minutes of a movie anyway...

Watching a movie on a laptop gives you AIDS in the eyes. You can get all the same benefits from the sofa in the living room with the home theater. :)

Since I always consider the effects to be the least important part of any movie as long as they are relatively up to snuff, I can't see any reason to plunk down coin for this movie.
Now, if I had free tickets to an IMAX, I'd go see it.

Watching a movie on a laptop gives you AIDS in the eyes. You can get all the same benefits from the sofa in the living room with the home theater. :)No, I'm sorry. It's just so much more suggestive when you're in the bed already. Especially for the epic win of getting out of watching something crappy - you're teetering on a knife's edge to pull it off, already being under the blankets on a cold winter's night gives you an edge here.
Also, this is the home/desktop replacement laptop, not my business/portable laptop. 17 inch screen is plenty big when the screen is only 3 feet away from your head.
But the biggest reason? Don't have to pay for the home theatre.
We don't watch much TV anyway (except kids movies and football games.) At this point we've started to actually consider it "a pain" to have to go watch something in front of an actual TV. We're hulu/netflix people most of the time.

I just got back from seeing it in baby IMAX 3D.
Eye Candy Factor: OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG
The hype about the visuals is not over rated. The 3D is done seamlessly, and lasts for the entire movie. After a bit, you don't even consciously notice it, it simply is a natural part of the movie.
The fact of the matter is that the visuals in this movie are about as far ahead of anything else done to date as regular movies are to this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Muybridge_race_horse_animated.gif)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dd/Muybridge_race_horse_animated.gif.
This is simply a massive Epic Win in the eye candy department.
Picture a coral reef, mixed with a Jurassic park forest painted by Roger Dean.
Plot/Story: ROFL Are you kidding me? I guess if you're going to spend all that money on special effects to blow your mind, you've got nothing left for a screenwriter. :suicide:
If I went back and watched the movie frame by frame there is a slight possibility that there is a Hollywood cliche that they didn't use, but I doubt it.
It is unbelievably predictable and the entire plot can be summed up as follows: Fire Bad, Tree Pretty.
The one thing that I did get a real laugh out of is the fact that the magic "mineral" that they were mining was actually called "Unobtanium". I guess they didn't have any money left in the budget to get Cantafordium.
Now that being said, the eye candy is so amazing that it actually "makes up" for the horrible script.
So if you could leave you knowledge of history at the door and enjoy "300", then you'll like Avatar.
If you couldn't handle the historical and practical implausibilities of 300 and so didn't enjoy "300" then this movie probably isn't for you.
Sort of Spoiler warning
Unless of course you think that all corporations are soulless monstrosities intent on destroying Gaea, via the military industrial complex, and the world would be better if the people rose up and destroyed them. In that case, the plot will make perfect sense to you.

OPT pretty much summed it up. The plot was certainly lacking, but the eye candy is amazing, especially in IMAX 3D. It's too bad the plot wasn't better because it could have been the perfect movie for it's genre. Visually it is ground breaking and hopefully we'll see more like it, but one that doesn't ignore everything else. All in all, I thought it was worth the extra cash to see in IMAX.

I wasn't all "I have to see this movie"...but figured I would probably see it sometime. My buddy called up and said let's go so tried getting tickets to the Imax two hours before...yeah right...they were sold out until the 11PM show.
Got tickets to the "regular 3D" screening at another theater.....
FANTASTIC movie! Though I would say you are foolish to not see it in 3D...it is really jaw dropping.
Just about "every" movie has been done 1,238 times before....everything pretty much is a re-hash in some way or another. (Heck if you like Quentin Tarentino movies they are actually all complete re-makes through the eyes of a coke head)
I'm not a big fan of the "type of story line" in this movie but only really one line "bothered me" out of all the cliche's. Even with a story line I am usually not a fan of I LIKED the story...and like I said the 3D is amazing....this in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM is the "Halloween 43 3D" experience...it isn't "hey lets have the branch of that tree come out over the audience"
It adds serious depth to the screen and certainly changes movies forever. this is the biggest advancement since "talkies" in my opinion.

Saw it tonight. Roger Ebert was right that this movie feels just as big/epic as when Star Wars first opened.
It's simply an exceptional movie across any criteria. The story is formulaic, but it's not any more cliche or relies more on classic archetypes than Star Wars or Lord of the Rings did. It's certainly not any more formulaic than this year's 'Star Trek', but it's a polished well-made spectacle that will immediately become an iconic film.
Cameron's other classic movies (Terminator 2, Aliens, Titanic, True Lies) were also pretty simple stories and overall plots, but very well done and all winners in terms of films. This one is the same way.
The movie isn't anti-American, which I think the film is getting flack from native fascists incorrectly for. The movie criticizes the general behaviors of colonialism or imperialism, in whatever time period.
I would put this movie right up with 'District 9' as movies to see from 2009.

Saw it tonight at the local IMAX.
Visuals set new standards, agreed, but didn't stop me from being monumentally bored for 60-70% of the movie.
Not going to dig into the writing of the movie as others have pointed out the problems in that department, but will say that only once during the film did I become aggravated. And that was a fairly minor point.

Actually the archetype for that story goes much further back.
It's simply another version of what Joseph Campbell called the monomyth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth)
And to clarify, my issue with the story was not so much the content, as to how cliched they presented it.
I'll cite but one example.
The Colonel drinking the coffee while in the gunship. That entire bit, not only him doing that, but his posture and how he held it is pure cliche.

I thought she did OK. And I think she used to be more cautious about sci fi movies with poorly written scripts, but if this is any indication, I'm guessing we could see her in a new Aliens one.
I'd personally like to see them close it out on that one, with a good movie to end it, rather than whatever abomination the last one was.

I wish I never saw those last two....it wasn't like "Matrix" bad where people had heartache that is wasn't "new" for the sequels....uuumm they kinda blew their load on "new" in the first one? The rest had to kinda follow and I personally enjoyed them for what they were (heck if you can overlook Keanu Reeves acting you don't really expect a PLOT do you?
But what ever abortion those last two Aliens movies were, never should have been done...for the record that "prison" one was much worse than the last one IMO...not as cheesy, just worse.

I only saw it in IMAX because they had it within 5 miles of me at my regular cinema. I wouldn't have drove 45 mins. Not after I drove that from work to Tampa to see Star Trek....which was awesome on IMAX. But everything was a pain, including finding parking on city streets. I saw Christmas Carol in regular 3D and that was awesome too. So I think you'd still enjoy Avatar. JMO.

If you are thinking about IMAX, check online, as it is often sold out a few days in advance.

Certainly the best seats are sold out in advance from people buying them online. I went in Providence and got my tix the day before, was able to get good seats about half way up and towards the middle.
When I was going in people buying tickets were making comments about how they should have gotten them online in advance.
Especially if you have a long drive get them that way. I got em at movietickets.com.

There are only 7 original plots in the world, and every story is just a variation of those same plots. That doesn't mean a plot can't suck. It may be essentially true, but it's not relevent to the discussion. While there are obviously a limited # of THEMES and any plot can be classified in the taxonomy of plots easily enough, the classic categorie you choose for the story you write or the movie you make has nothing to do with wheter it sucks or not. It's all about (and remember we are principally a patriots community) execution.

It also should be noted that not everything in movies/plays/literature has to be plot-driven. Poetry, for example, can be more concerned with evoking an emotional response than telling a story. The same applies to movies (insert obligatory reference to RG and his criteria for movie selection here).

I went to see it again with my parents last night, IMAX was sold out so we went to the Digital 3D one instead. They thought it was fantastic, but as someone that can compare it to the IMAX version I was underwhelmed. Noticeable difference in color vividness, detail, and even 3D depth.

So the 3D itself was noticeably better in IMAX than even the digital...not just a better "experience" as far as maybe sound and "size"?

Did a quick search and didn't find any threads on the subject. So, anyone else here see Avatar?
SF87 was not impressed.
I thought it was visually very impressive, but I liked the plot better when it was Dances With Wolves or The Last Samurai.
Also reminded me alot of this movie I saw when I was like 12, called Small Soldiers. The Marine leader dude was the EXACT same character as the leader of the soldier toys, and the rest of the Marines were also pretty much the same as the evil soldier toys.
Throw in an environmentalist subtext and a few lame references to "shock and awe", and you get Avatar.
Also, "unobtainium"? Really? James Cameron worked on this for 16 years and that's the best he could come up with?

Well then, I will say this for the movie. Having the main character travel thousands of light years and change species just to cockblock some alien dude, who he then sends to his death after winning over his tribe by riding a dragon, reaches a whole new level of "PWNED".

Also, "unobtainium"? Really? James Cameron worked on this for 16 years and that's the best he could come up with?
I thought that was the funniest bit in the movie, and I doubt that Cameron even got the joke.
I've used the terms "Unobtainium" or "Cantafordium" more than once here.
It's a derogatory term used by engineers to describe an impractical, pie in the sky solution that isn't based on reality.
Some one suggests that all we have to do is build widget A and our problems are solved. The problem is that to make widget A you need Unobtainium or Cantafordium, so although that sounds like a wonderful idea, it simply isn't based in reality.
Cameron used Unobtanium as the Macguffin to justify the entire exercise on Pandora (not to be confused with a box by the same name :banghead: ), without realizing that by choosing that name he was scuttling the entire proposition among those who actually use the term.
It was as if he was making a movie where the MacGuffin was a financial crisis and the solution to getting more money was to go to a planet called "end of the rainbow" and mine something called "pot of gold". Everyone would simply laugh out loud at such terms.

I don't listen to them as much as I used to now that I don't do a lot of drugs anymore. But they are still in my .As a druggie teenager, I was a big Doors fan. After all, when you don't know sh!t about life nothing is cooler than music that is both catchy and trippy and lyrics about snakes, blood, fire, and getting shitfaced drunk, especially by a guy who was a legendary druggie and drunk and who managed to kill himself before he got old and boring.
Even knowing all this now, though. As you say, Jh, they still have a place in my heart. And some of their songs are actually really good.

I bought the bathtub that Jim Morrison died in on Ebay. :coffee:If that was real, it would be sweet. I would put a glasstop on it and use it as a coffee table.

Me too. Plus, I'd dig Jim up and put him in it first, then put the glass top on. Like my own Rock n Roll Lenin thing. :toast:

I ~hated~ Avatar. Any other haters on board?
Soooo preachy
Yes.
Well, I wouldn't say I hated it, but I was very disappointed. It had the visual awesomeness of a blockbuster that's worth seeing in theaters, but the plot of a made for TV movie.

Wow. Now Avatar is apparently a political film bent on revealing bad things being done by the Chinese government.
'Avatar' pulled from 2-D screens by Chinese government
January 18, 2010 | 9:20 pm
The most successful movie of all time in China is being pulled from the majority of theaters there much sooner than expected.
The communist nation’s state-run movie distributor China Film Group is unexpectedly yanking the James Cameron-directed blockbuster "Avatar" from 1,628 2-D screens this week in favor of a biography of the ancient philosopher Confucius starring Chow-Yun Fat.
Paul Hanneman, co-president of international distribution for the movie’s distributor 20th Century Fox, confirmed the news, which he and other executives at the studio learned Monday evening.
According to a report in the Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily, the move was made at the urging of propaganda officials who are concerned that "Avatar" is taking too much market share from Chinese films and drawing unwanted attention to the sensitive issue of forced evictions.
Millions of Chinese have been uprooted to make way for high rises and government infrastructure projects. “Nail House” is a popular term given to homes of dwellers who refuse to leave though they are surrounded by demolished homes. In "Avatar," human colonists try to demolish the village of an alien race in order to obtain a precious resource buried below it.
However, David Wolf of Wolf Group Asia, a media consultancy based in Beijing, said the decision to pull "Avatar" had more to do with the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday.
"There's certain windows in the year that are held for domestic films," Wolf said. "We're coming up on Chinese New Year, so this can be expected."
The week-long national holiday, also known as the spring festival, begins the weekend of Feb. 13. China has only 4,000 screens, which places run times at a premium.
Wolf said that most foreign films get a 10-day run before being pulled. Executives at Fox had expected "Avatar" to play much longer, however, due to its massive popularity. It is already the most successful movie of all time in China, having grossed a record $76 million, according to the studio.
Losing the 2-D screens will be a blow to "Avatar," but not a fatal one, a studio executive said. The movie will remain on nearly 900 3-D screens, which have so far generated $49 million, or 64% of its total ticket sales, according to Fox.
It’s not uncommon for China Film Group to protect domestic pictures. In 2006, "The Da Vinci Code" was unexpectedly pulled from theaters there after racking up $13 million in sales.
Foreign movies were also removed from theaters in the run-up to last year’s 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. The sweep was believed to help promote the nationalistic epic, “The Founding of A Republic.”
Only 20 foreign movies per year are allowed to be shown in China's theaters. "Avatar," which opened worldwide in mid-December, was held in Chinese theaters until January because the 2009 quota had already been filled.
Pirated copies of “Avatar” are already available in Beijing’s bootleg DVD stores.
Calls to the China Film Group were not returned.

Given its budget, I was hoping they'd done better with the screenplay.

3 hours wasn't enough time for him to work up the courage to make a pass at his date ;)

Would have been more appropriate a few weeks ago, but still pretty funny

I didn't expect much from plot, but was still disappointed. Movie with that kind of budget could have done a lot better, even if it's just trying to be a simple story.

I liked Sherlock Holmes a lot (there's a Sherlock Holmes thread somewhere). It's weird, though, because you sit through the film and never really realize that the characters are in fact Sherlock and Watson. When the name Sherlock is used, it feels more like when someone says "good job Captain Obvious" and not to address a real character.
Having said that, I liked it. I liked the altered relationship between Holmes and Watson. I could have done without Rachel McAdams, but she didn't hurt it enough that I'd avoid seeing it again.
Also I liked the score a whole lot, it kept the movie going, whether it was slow or fast.

I have never read any of the books(don't care for mysteries) so this will be a whole new world (a new fantastic point of view;)) anyhow. I think I need to catch up on some movies this weekend..I bet hubby will go to this one with me!

Yeah, I wolfed down the books when I was a kid. So it was quite different. Another thing that made it amusing for me is that for a number of years, I lived a 15 minute walk (across the park) from the Sherlock Holmes end of Baker Street.

But there's a difference. Star Wars is tremendous, Avatar sucks. Furthermore, Cameron's older movies like Terminator = Awesome, while Avatar = Suck.
Not only do I expect better from such a huge movie, I expect better from James Cameron.

If you think Star Wars was tremendous we will likely NEVER agree on a movie.:) Avatar didn't suck, it was just a C- plot-wise with amazing visuals that kept me interested despite the preaching.

I enjoyed the visuals and thought of the potential of films going forward. The movie itself was boring beyond measure. :)
Was reminded, briefly, of the computer game Dragon's lair.

That's a very important distinction.
That's why when everyone complained about the acting in Eps. 1-3 (especially Hayden Christiansen), I was like, WTF? Did you not see the first three?
