Holy mackeral. If you love comic books, and you love comic book movies, you’re gonna be loving the heck out of 2010. Not only is Marvel Studios releasing “Iron Man 2″ and “Thor” in the same year, but Warner Bros. has just announced that 2010 will also see the release of the long in gestation “Green Lantern” movie (December 17th, 2010), as well as “Jonah Hex” (August 6, 2010) with Josh Brolin. Plus, that other green guy, “Green Hornet”, will also be hitting theaters in 2010. But wait, there’s more!
Besides those five movies, IGN (via) has 2010 also seeing the release of Louis Letterrier’s remake of “Clash of the Titans”, which has been scheduled for March 2010. Plus, remember that Christopher Nolan guy? Well he’s got a new movie called “Inception” that’s also planned for a July 16, 2010 release. And there’s also Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch” (described as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”) which is headed to theaters October 8, 2010, a year earlier than the 2011 date Snyder had initially mentioned.
What does this all mean to you, the moviegoer? Well if you love genre movies, you’re gonna be eating pie and asking for more come 2010. And if “Green Lantern”, “Thor”, and “Iron Man 2″ do well, we’ll be seeing even more big-budget comic book movies in the future. Okay, what I meant was, if “Thor” and “Green Lantern” does as well as “Iron Man 2″, which is pretty much the only lock for 2010 box office gold at this point.
Here’s the breakdown of the films listed for 2010 (dates subject to change, as they invariably always do):
“Clash of the Titans” remake – March 26, 2010
“Green Hornet” – Summer 2010
“Iron Man 2″ – April 30, 2010
“Thor” – July 16, 2010
“Inception” – July 16, 2010
“Jonah Hex” – August 6, 2010
“Sucker Punch” – October 8, 2010
“Green Lantern” – December 17th, 2010

I'm with you on this. I loved that movie. I hope they are able to keep a lot of what was in the original. Especially the Cracken.

There are plenty of examples of movies adapted from 'great American literature'. The reason there haven't been very many good comic adaptations is because special effects couldn't do what needed to be done before about 10 years ago. Now that they can, they are making them because they are: ENTERTAINING.
The comic book is American, and just like 'regular literature' there are fine examples of storytelling in this medium, just as there are crap examples in book form. If you haven't read Sandman, then you are missing out on some great literature couched in a 'crappy comic'.

LOL 'A' comic book? Way to step out on a limb, but yes (and not because the Grapes of Wrath is an overrated novel, IMO).
You're not going to win this argument by praising American literature (which Annihilus loves). So you might as well try denigrating particular comic book stories to make your point. If you've actually read any, that is.

So you are comparing a comic book to Grapes of Wrath? There are some that are really quite good. There's amazing literature in the oddest of places, RIPF.
Cases in point: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (that ditzy TV show), Watchmen, Kingdom Come, Maus, The System, Flood, Cages, A Contract With God and Other Tenement Stories, Ghostworld.
On this topic (kind of), I've just started in on a series I've long been told (by anyone who knows me well) that I'd love: Firefly.
Thus far I've only seen the pilot and the train robbery episode, but...just excellent stuff. I'm intrigued to see where the main plotline goes, but I understand I'm not going to get the development and climax I'm hoping for because the plug got pulled.

To your point, option 3 is "tradition." The thread where he started this is in the archives. It contains a post where someone asks him how long he's going to keep this up, and he basically says: "watch me and find out - you're in for a long ride." I think that was like 2004ish.
Actually, I have read comic books.....as a child.Yeah, "comic books" like you're thinking of are probably not quite what these guys are talking about for the most part. Just as Jackie Collins or whoever is not really William Faulkner [or insert the great novelist of your choice here] even though they both "write books."
Even if you did happen to read some of the greats as a child, you wouldn't have realized it at the time. Kind of like a 10 year old will enjoy Rocky, but not realize why it was a legitimate "Best Picture" winner.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.....are you serious?100% absolutely serious. The love story running seasons 1-3 is probably the best and most thoughtful love story between "teens" that I've ever encountered. No lie. The battle for various souls running through seasons 2-7, the intricacy of various temptations, etc., is fascinating. Some of it is hamfisted, but just by volume that's going to be true by nature. Overall, seasons 2 and 3 hold up with almost anything I've encountered.

Green Lantern...is that a classic? Iron Man?
I'm sorry, I don't see that as anything other then mind candy. From a 10,000 foot perspective, look at it this way:
Having characters that are superhuman in some way opens up avenues that are simply not open for "normal" characters. Whether it be unnaturally long life, true immortality, well grounded feelings of superiority, feeling of not fitting in, weight of incredible responsibility to fellow man (and often growing weary of that weight and what comes of it), etc.
There are a lot of things in play for "super"persons that cannot reasonably be explored using "normals" but are still every bit as worthy of exploration and real to us, because typically they are grounded in our own experience, but magnified 8000x for examination.
Used properly, it's a fascinating storytelling device. Don't think of the greats as parallel to the general crap most associate with comic books (though I'd be wary of writing some of those off without close examination), think of them as parallel to Greek mythology, Homer, that sort of thing. That's much closer.
Will students be examining Watchmen 3000 years from now? Maybe, but probably not. But my point is that the genre/form itself has distinct advantages, and a real raison d'etre, if you catch my drift.

And yeah, it was. Interesting twist on the Romeo/Juliet think when the relationship is between a Vampire Slayer and a vampire cursed with a soul and a conscience. Sounds ridiculous, but it told a story that would be hard to tell in any other way (specifically the end of season 2.)
Now, I'll grant you that typically love between modern teens is...fru-fru. But honestly, get beyond how the tale is told to the tale itself, and I think you'd appreciate the themes and morals that are imparted. Hey, there's even a big anti-premarital sex message that hits you like a sledgehammer! :P

I think kids ( and many "adults" ) are being dumbed down by the comic book/video game culture that seems to be prevalent and we see further evidence of that today in the movies that are being produced.
Comic books used to be kid's fantasy tools. Now comic books and video games seem to have replaced reading great stories.

$5.6 Million Comics Auction
The world paid rapt attention to Heritage Auctions, and to the soaring market for fine comic books and choice original art, in the last two weeks of February as the company staged back-to-back record setting auctions – Signature Illustration Art on Feb. 18 ($4.5 million+) and Signature Vintage Comics and Comic Art on Feb. 25 ($5.6 million).
This biggest story to come out of the two auctions, and perhaps any auction in the nation so far this year, was the $1,075,500 total price (including Buyer's Premium) paid for an exceedingly rare high grade CGC-certified 8.0 copy of Detective #27, the first appearance of "The Batman," which became the single most valuable comic book on the planet at 2:26 PM CT on Thursday, Feb. 25.
"We knew a couple months ago that this Detective #27 was a good candidate to break the previous auction record for a comic book of $317,000," said Lon Allen, Director of the Comics Department at Heritage, "and then around the time of the auction we suspected it could go as high as $800,000. The fact that it then topped seven figures, and nosed out Superman for the world record price was simply amazing to us all. I've never been in an auction room with such excitement."

Thanks man, that means a lot coming from someone too stupid to enjoy the finest selections of American literature (which is obvious, from your love of comics). Annihilus is right in that same boat with you! Luckily us dumbed down idiots can appreciate us some stick figures and word balloons, tho.
And you just can't beat the Dread Dormamu with a stick.

Yeah...I did see that. I used to have some mint vintage comics. Unfortunately I had a friend who had a pretty bad drug problem and stole them to sell (among other things) to support his habit....

Ouch, that sucks. Annihilus sold many of his to buy pizza in college, which amounts to much the same thing (except for the whole getting to eat pizza part).
Most have since been replaced, but still wish some of those originals were still in the collection.

I wish I had sold a lot of mine when they were still worth money. See specifically: Image titles.

Yeah, I still have the 1st 50 issues of Spawn sitting around somewhere at my dad's place....

So, you mean, like 5 minutes after you bought them? ;)
Actually, Walking Dead commands premium prices. Great series, too. :zombie:

Meh, from memory first and ninth issue of Spawn were worth a good bit of scratch at one point. Same with the Gen13 hologram covers.
I might be wrong, though, been a long time - but I never read any of the image stuff at all anymore. Well, I guess I read Ellis' stormwatch/authority, but that's tangential, heh.

The Walking Dead is a great read. Nothing all that groundbreaking in terms of coming up with new ideas with a zombie story (really, there aren't all that many variations), but the story itself has been very good and hasn't really let up at all in the 60+ issues so far.
Image sucked at first, no doubt about it. Spawn has actually matured into a good series, with some fantastic art - tho the best Spawn stories, IMO, were told in the Hellspawn mini painted by Ashley Wood. Some really dark art in that book, you can barely recognize the character/story when compared to the original.
That old Liefeld and Larsen stuff tho? :Eason:

I've recently taken to reading Transmetropolitan again (and Hellboy) - I was planning on making my next mission to read Invincible, because I never got around to it in the first place.
I'll have a look at Walking Dead (and if you haven't, you should read all of Planetary)

You're not the first that has mentioned Planetary. Will have to give it a look. Haven't read Invincible either, but it's on the list to eventually get.
Kinda slacked off on the comic front lately in an attempt to beef up the Lovecraft collection. In case you haven't heard of him, he's an AMERICAN AUTHOR that writes GREAT LITERATURE and commands great respect, like Poe. ANOTHER AMERICAN AUTHOR OF LITERATURE. They make movies from their stuff once in a while. :thumb:

I love you for your subtlety, Anni.
Actually, instead of using the 1st part of your sn as a nickname, I think I'll use the middle.
I dub thee: "Nihi."
(For référence, that's pronounced "knee-high".) :thumb:

You keep your hairy butt faced away from Annihilus when you say that, please. :harumph:
On a note related to 'Nihi' or 'Nihilist', Annihilus was accosted in an online poker room one time because this really religious guy sitting at the table thought that the screen name in question was referring to nihilism. It took Annihilus 5 minutes to figure out wtf he was talking about after his initial attack. It's like: "Dude, get your nihil's straight."

You should have asked the really religious guy what he was doing in an online poker room....
Probably placing bets while the kiddy porn downloaded.....

Actually, a priest just placed 2nd in some huge tournament. Winnings went into the parish coffers.

I'm not even a comic fan. I'm just excited to see the Clash of the Titans remake.
And Flagg, Firefly is a great series. Obviously you've been told but when you're done with the first and only series, the movie (or the Big Damn Movie) "Serenity", from what I've read is essentially all of Season II.

In addition to this thread, Firefly DELIVERED. Annihilus was skeptical before seeing it, but was hooked after the first episode.

I was hooked instantly too except, on a random whim I rented Serenity and had only heard of Firefly in passing and didn't realize that I was renting the movie that continued the story of it.
I was hooked from the monologue intro through the scene where the nameless assassin shows someone a respectable and honorable death.
Bad. Ass.

I hope they don't f-up Clash of the Titans. One of my favorite movies as a kid and I've been wishing for a remake for years and years.

I hated Firefly. I wanted to like it, but I just didn't.
