View Full Version : Snowstorm this weekend??

It's possible, but still too early to say. I'm hoping and looking forward to seeing Mark Henderson on his John Deere just waiting for the go signal from BB.
This is from WBZ4 weather center:
The extended forecast is filled with uncertainty for this weekend. Currently, most signs suggest that a significant storm will evolve off Delmarva later Saturday and Sunday. This system will be preceded by a weak wave of low pressure that could transfer a mix of light snow inland and rain or snow near the south coast Friday. Once the main core of energy emerges over the Mid-Atlantic coast over the weekend, resultant cyclogenesis may transform our region into a winter wonderland! A classic Nor'easter would not be surprising based upon the presence of healthy high pressure in southern Canada contributing cold air coupled with an intense storm south of Nantucket creating gales over southern New England. With a projected northeast to northerly wind, coastal areas including Boston could receive plowable amounts of snow with rain eventually switching to snow over Cape Cod except the islands. HOWEVER, SLIGHT SHIFTS in the storm track would make a monumental difference in the outcome so bear in mind that this discussion is subject to revision as we approach the event. With that said, as of 1pm today, the latest guidance is favorable for a near miss rather than a direct hit this weekend.
resultant cyclogenesis...
That would be cool. I love cyclogenesis! I wish they were still on tour. Just one question what or where is Delmarva?

Cyclogenesis just isn't the same without Phil......
Delmarva is the Delmarva peninsula. I think it's composed of Delaware and part of Maryland. Or maybe it's a new breed of eServer being marketed by Dell.

Wouldn't that be Delaware Maryland and Virginia??;)

Whoa, I think you just might be on to something there runner. DelMarVa. How come I lived in PA, went to school there in fact and I don't ever remember hearing that? Have you ever come across something that you should know almost by osmosis, proximity, or the frequency with which it is used, or the fact that it is written on your forehead, and yet somehow you missed it???
I do know that cyclogenesis is by the way. That is the process through which storm systems, particularly storms of a circular habit, find God.

I wonder...do you think that maybe something would go wrong, a mechanical failure of some kind, that would prevent the underground radiant heating system at Gillette from working? Sure would suck if Ricky had to trudge through all that snow...

I could be wrong, but I don't think the heating system is designed to melt snow and ice on the surface.
It's supposed to warm the root zone, in order to extend the growing season for the grass. You can tell by all that dirt between the hash marks how well that's working out.

Well, I do know that they use such external radiant systems to keep walkways and drives free of snow. The circulated water needs only to be 45-50 degrees, although in those situations they have a more efficient thermal mass. If the ground is warmer than 32 degrees snow and ice will melt, regardless of intent.
Of course none of this is taking into account the plowable amounts of mature nano-technology undoubtedly in use or the resultant cyclogenesis, all of which is too small to actually see. But believe me, it's there. If they can freeze a man's head and put it in a tube (and charge money for it) they can do anything. The real question is can the Red Sox thaw Ted using such a system, and if so will the head want to play baseball?

I know that it's going to be cold down in Foxboro on Sunday, that's for sure and here's a little treat for some people that are tired of the usual tailgating fare.

The latest on the potential Delmarvian cylcogenesis event:
The extended forecast for this weekend remains a dilemma. Currently, most signs suggest that a significant storm will evolve off Delmarva Saturday. This system might be preceded by a weak wave of low pressure that could transfer a strip of mostly light snow on the South Coast except possibly a mix on the lower Cape late tomorrow. Once a main core of energy emerges over the Mid-Atlantic coast, resultant cyclogenesis will spiral moisture into southern and central New England Saturday. A classic Nor'easter would not be surprising based upon the presence of healthy high pressure in southern Canada contributing cold air coupled with an intense storm south of Nantucket. The consensus of a myriad of computer models is now trending towards a higher impact event here although the ribbon of strongest winds and greatest precipitation remains just offshore. Previous analysis placed the governing upper air low pressure system deeply south out of our territory. Latest indications do not confirm this thinking. As a result, it is prudent to offer a preliminary prediction of a medium-sized snowstorm ie. 3-6" for the metro area with higher amounts possible mainly south of the Mass Pike except over Cape Cod. The ever present caveat is that SLIGHT SHIFTS in the storm track would make a monumental difference in the outcome so bear in mind that this discussion is still subject to revision as we approach the event. It is too premature to pull out all the stops or conversely completely eliminate snow from the forecast until new data is more convincing. It would be more reassuring if most of the computer models were producing similar scenarios.
I don't know about anyone else, but the idea of my favorite weather babe, Melissa Bell, gently whispering this stuff into my ear makes me mildly stimulated :D

As a matter of fact that forecase is so convoluted that I am unable to interpret it without subtitles dumbing it down a little.
Since we have no subtitles I decided to run it throught the International Talk Like a Pirate Day Pirate Translator to see what Old Cap'n Slappy has to say about the sit'iation.

OK, serious weather talk for a moment.
The forecasters, as of Thursday evening, are now agreeing that we'll get hit with some degree of snowstorm. Estimates run from 6-15 inches, depending on who you listen to. It should start Friday night/Saturday morning. It may still be snowing Sunday at noon.
This will have an impact on 'Fin travel plans. They'll probably have to think about traveling tomorrow rather than Saturday. They should have alot of spare time on their hands in the hotel. Think someone could send them a Lawrence Taylor gift :p

OK, back to the fun stuff. Here's the latest prose from the weather writers at WBZ4.com.
Currently, most signs suggest that a significant storm will evolve off Delmarva tomorrow. We are on the threshold of a classic Nor'easter as healthy high pressure in southern Canada contributes cold air in tandem with an intensifying storm south of Nantucket. The consensus of a myriad of computer models is now trending towards a high impact event here. Previous analysis placed the governing upper air low pressure system deeply south out of our territory. Latest indications do not confirm this thinking with this feature evolving precariously close to southern New England. Consequently, it is prudent to pump up the potential amounts to more than a foot west and north of Boston with 8-12" in the city and lower totals on the South Shore and especially Cape Cod where a mixing or plain rain occurs for a period of time. The stripe of heaviest snow will lie in an arc 40 or more miles west and north of Boston into the southern portions of northern New England. High tides near 10am and 10pm this weekend will feature some coastal flooding and wave battery particularly Sunday morning. With a convergence of solutions from the myriad of computer models which serve as forecast guidance, it now appears convincing enough to pull out all the stops.
I hope everyone has enough milk, bread and fuel because this just may be the end of the world as we know it. Anytime there's a convergence of solutions, its time to panic.

Whomever is writing these reports is infatuated with the word "myriad".
Sounds like the heaviest snow will now fall north and west of the city, with lighter amounts (rain) to the south... ie Foxboro.

We'll find out on Sunday. Weather forecasting around here is still just a best guess. Complicating matters is a little contract dispute between the state and snow plow drivers. Should make for an interesting ride to the stadium.

This forcast is starting to look plowable.
Let's go to the radar map:
http://i.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/1.0/weather/accu/cnn_nex2.png
Here we can clearly see the disturbance forming to the North and East of Delmarva proper. This has the potential, due to the confluence of models, to look vastly different than it appears, but not as different as we anticipate. I think we can pull out all the stops on this now. Stay tuned. Back to you Ken.

OK folks, we're officially in the throes of the Delmarvian Cyclogenesis. Current predictions are for 18-24" with snow continuing up to game time.
I've normally got a 25 minute drive to the stadium. I'm hoping I'll be able to get out of my driveway and off my street. For me, it will be a matter of safely getting to and from the stadium. My gut feeling is that the stadium will be fairly empty. It's alot to ask anyone to drive with that much snow on the ground and still coming down.
I wonder how the players and game officials are going to make out getting there. If the Fins waited until today to come in, they're going to be going through travel hell. I wonder how the grounds crew will get the field even semi playable. The seats will be under 2 feet of snow. Should be interesting for the ones that make it. This is not like the Snow Bowl. That snow didn't start until a few hours before game time. I was in the lot when the snow started.
The bottom line is that this will be a logistical nightmare for everyone involved.

Well, Bideau--I must say that I was waiting to see if we ACTUALLY got the storm, as sometimes they predict these things and then we get NOTHING...
However, given that the "Delmarva Cyclo" is already upon us, I am going to opt to not drive the three hours (normally!), down to Foxboro, afterall... I feel badly about this, as a bunch of us were going to get together to tail-gate, but maybe the others can still make it...
I agree that it will probably be a logistical nightmare for everyone... Good luck & safe travels!... :)

It's not as easy as it sounds, Bionic. First, the lots don't open until Noon. The snow will still be coming down hard and the plows will be having trouble keeping up. I'm sure the Pats will do their best to keep the lots and access paths clear, but I don't see how they can clear the stands.
For me, it's not a comfort issue. I'll dress appropriately. It's a safety issue. If I feel I can get to and from the stadium safely, I'll be there. But there are alot of roads that will be undrivable, many people won't have power and they will not want to leave their loved ones for a game.
It will be a "game time" decision for me.

Well, considering that the 3 hour commute may end up being double that, it's a smart decision. The heaviest band of snow is predicted right over the 95-Rte 1 belt from Providence to Boston.
Those of us who make it will recount all the travel stories on Monday.

Thanks for writing this, Brian, as I have already received a PM, calling me a big wimp, for not wanting to make the trek down there tomorrow... (And we'll just see if that particular poster, who shall remain nameless, ever gets his cooler back from me now!) Heh-heh! :D
Seriously though, it makes me feel a lot better if even YOU will be making a last minute decision about attempting to make it to the game tomorrow... I was feeling a little guilty about not going, but I know that I have to listen to my gut instinct and it is telling me to stay put, hunker down and wait it out...
Hope I don't lose my satellite signal, though, because then I wouldn't be able to watch the game! YIKES!!!... Now THERE is a scary thought!!!...

LMAO!!!... :D (hey--how do you find those little emoticons that are rolling on the floor, laughing their asses off?!)
Funny (on SO MANY levels!) that you should mention Cookie in your post here... Firstly, because he still wants to go tomorrow and also because "HE" is the one that thinks that I am being a big wimp... He figures that since I drive a Suburban, that I should be fearless of driving in a nor'easter... Frankly, it is the Mass-hole drivers that scare the bejeezus out of me!... (That, and Sister-of-Peg can't take care of my doggies for me, afterall... And I badly sprained my ankle earlier this week and driving just plain hurts to do right now... And, etc, etc...)
So, yes--I will HUNKER down... I thought that ALL Vermontahs were "hunkerer downers"?!... :D
(Tell me, did I just wordify a verb there?!...) I can't seem to get that wordify or verbify thingey straight!... ;) :p

Seeing as how we were going to all tailgate and then watch the gama at funway it wouldn't be much fun with a group of 2 or 3 people now would it? Since the fearless leader, well not really fearless now is she?!?, is backing down and waiting until next week when it will probably snow again....I think she's going to be stuck inside up in Vamont until the draft so we'll see you then PEG!!!! :D  :) :p

This is not looking like good tailgating weather that much is certain. We are seeing some plowable effects from that storm up this way so I can only imagine what it is doing down there. I hope this storm doesn't peter-out by tomorrow. I am really looking forward to some sizeable accumulation at kickoff. :( ;)
Snow is blue. Rain is green.

Last report from Foxboro was 13" with the heaviest still to come. Forecast is still for 24" or more.
I'll check on that poor dolphin I found in the snow (see pictures on previous page) in the morning. Hopefully, the poor thing will still be there. :p If he survives, I may take him to the game.

This is gonna be fun tommorrow. I decided to give my tix to 2 good friends (I'll buy 1 there) and we're going down together. Probably eat at the Red Wing before. For anybody still going I bet you can get a ticket half price at gametime. I tend to visit people I know in different sections anyways. I am pumped for this game and next weeks since I'll probably miss the Buff game with a wedding Dec 27th.........The fins will fall apart, finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs.

It is absolutely dumping up in VT. And fast. We have had about 10" or so in the last three hours, and we have somewhere between 13-15" already. I hope Foxborough gets at least as much as we do!!! Should make for a great game. (That's a very cute doggie photo by the way).

I just ckecked the forcast for Foxboro, and no end of this in site. Logan airport just announced that it closed, so the losing team (Dolphins) may have to spend an extra day enjoying New England hospitality!
I threw that Logan thing in there because my Bro is supposed to fly out today for Aruba. I don't know whether to chuckle or console,,, any suggestions??;)

There's going to be bands of snow going through the area during the day. It won;t be snowing all the time. It's estimated that the Foxboro area has 24-30". I've got about 2' at my house, about 10 miles from the stadium.
The Pats have promised that the lots and pathways will be cleared. They're asking for people to carpool as much as possible to cut down on the traffic. The stairways will be cleared but the seats will not. They're warning people to wear warm boots since their feet will most likely be in snow.
I'll be contacting my friends shortly to try and convince them to still go.
Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW!
It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW!
When we finally kiss goodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm
The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying
But as long as you love me so
LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW!
Boston Weather:
snowing and blowing.
Yeah, I got a butt-load of snow, as well and spent the morning shovelling, but I think that the Foxborough area got more down there...
...which bodes well for our TEAM to freeze the fish... :D

It looked better than fireworks could have! Everyone was totally laughing at the snow-throwing going on and commending the hard-core N.E. fans for persevering through the snow storm and then through the snow in their seats, in order to watch this game... Way to go, Patriot Nation! :thumb:
I just KNOW that our TEAM realized all of this and greatly appreciated it, don't you agree?!... :)

I was telling the guys next to me to stop. Security guys were looking for snowballers to arrest. It sure was fun today. Hope we get MORE snow next week.

Hey, Joe!--
I was wonderin' if the security guys might be trying to catch the snow throwers and throw them out... I know that security is wicked strict in Gillette, but jeezum crow--you fans that persevered through freezing your rear-ends off today, should have been cut a little slack... Especially given the fact that the seats weren't shovelled off and all...
Above and beyond all of that--it was a HUGE NFL HIT, to see the fans throwing snow, to celebrate... :D
Cripes, it's not like they were throwing bottles or anything...
Anyways--I am glad that it was FUN for you! Look forward to seeing you and everyone NEXT SUNDAY, but please don't hope for MORE snow, as I want to be able to make it next weekend! ;)

were throwing snowballs a the Dolphins during their last "drive" he he he he! (You know, the one where they never left their own 1 yd line? Except to go backwards for a safety). Oh, boohoo, dolphins. But, the Pats D was trying to get the fans to stop.
How 'bout them grimmaces by Dave "genius" Wandsteadt? Priceless.
And how 'bout that POOCH punt by Brady? COOL.
There were a couple of Fins fans sitting quite near me- I tried to be nice, but only for so long. We needed to psyche them out, so we (fans around us) did, and they left early! They were good fans, cheering on the Fins alot, but kind of stupid. Whenever the now "definitely not winning the AFC East" Fins would have the ball, the stupid fins fans would yell and make noise. Which, of course, was good for the Patriot's defense! So, I would say, "yeah, keep up the noise", as I "ohmed" very loudly, and smacked my hand against the plastic seats.

I would hate for the guys next to me to lose their seats. I saw two policemen coming down the aisle so I had to tell them. They kept throwing at a girl in a dolphin jacket anyways.

Security had no issues with the snow fireworks. That was a spontaneous and amazing celebration. I never once saw a security person speak to anyone.
But there's a difference between the fireworks and throwing snowballs at people. Throwing snowballs at the Dolphins when they were pinned at the endzone was stupid. It makes everyone look like idiots. Throwing snowballs at people in the stands is both stupid and harmful. But I think that was just a few isolated people.
Security in general was lax yesterday. It's the 1st time I can ever remember not being frisked when entering. I saw very few cops and stadium personnel during the game. And to the credit of most fans, they behaved and had a good time.
