Pat was such a hardass as a coach. He was such a perfect fit when he was coaching the B's

I don't remember who the B's where playing but a bunch of fights broke out and the benches were jawing back and forth, the camera catches Burns flexing his bicept and point to it while he mocks the other bench.

I wen't to the game with my dad when he returned to Boston as the coach of the Rockies, he got a huge ovation.

Near the end of the game he was signing autographs during a timeout.

Sorry to hijack but I have a Gahdan wrestling story... and you're right about the nut jobs, Therick.

We used to take the train in there for wrestling now and then. I was with a few smartass friends. We were watching Chief Jay Strongbow and some other guy going at it, can't remember who it was, but my buddy Fred was razzing the shit out of the guy, and Fred was a crude obnoxious bastard when he got going. After about 15 minutes he cut loose with a remark about the guy being gay, and this at least 70 year old woman in front of us turns around and screams "Don't you talk about my boy like that!!" and she breaks his nose with one punch. Knocked him back a row. Un-freeking-believable. Not sure if she was the guys mom or what. God we laughed for days.

HEADLINES FEATURES MIDSEASON RPT ALL-STAR GAME DIVISION NOTES Former NHL coach Pat Burns not letting cancer slow him down Tuesday, 01.27.2009 / 10:08 PM / News Canadian PressTAMPA, Fla. - Pat Burns was scouting a hockey game Tuesday night, which means it was another good day for the former NHL coach.

The 56-year old Burns recently confirmed he has lung cancer and knows the long-term outlook is "not good" in his third battle against the disease. The New Jersey Devils' scout, however, remains upbeat and is taking full advantage of each day.

"Right now, I'm just enjoying the time left. That's what I'm trying to do," Burns said before watching the Montreal Candiens play the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"The crying and everything, that's all finished. That's over. I told my family, that's it. We've done all that. Let's just enjoy what we have here."

Burns had chemotherapy treatments the first two times he had cancer, but is not planning to have the treatment this time.

"Maybe something new will come out. This is my third bout with it," Burns said. "I've had colon cancer before. I've had liver cancer before. Now it's proceeded into the lungs. It becomes a situation where, how much you do want to treat things. It's the treatment that's tough. I did through 2 1/2 year of chemo. I've had two major surgeries."

Burns has been examined at several top cancer centres and checks in with his doctors at least once every two weeks. He still plays golf and rides his motorcycle, but his link with hockey is key.

"I love working for New Jersey," Burns said. "They've been great to me. They've supported me. (General manager) Lou (Lamoriello) is a Godsend for me because he's looked after me, and I know I can stay close to hockey."

Burns was 501-350-161-14 in 14 seasons as an NHL coach with Montreal, Toronto, Boston and New Jersey. He led New Jersey to the 2002-03 Stanley Cup title and is a three-time Jack Adams Award winner as the NHL's top coach.

"I'm not going to stop," Burns said. "You've got to get up with a purpose in life."

Pat Burns was not amused.

When La Presse reported today that Burns is once again battling cancer, the story created the impression in the minds of many that a) this came as some sort of revelation to him and everyone else; and, b) he is so ill that he's not able to carry on in everyday life.

"I guess I just want people to know that I'm living a good life right now and carrying on with my life," Burns told TSN. "I am living in Florida, I'm playing golf, I'm going and scouting hockey games for the New Jersey Devils, I'm still working and doing my radio stuff in Montreal and I'm riding my motorcycle down here and enjoying life. People read a story like that and they think the worse right away. I don't want people to have the wrong picture of me right now."

The La Presse story was accurate insofar as Burns is battling cancer for the third time in his life and those who know him were aware of that after the World Championship last spring in Halifax and Quebec City, where Burns was a member of the Team Canada coaching staff. Burns made a decision at that time that he would not undergo any further chemotherapy in an attempt to battle the disease. He said he is doing "other" things to fight it as best as he.

What's clear, though, is that Burns is most interested now in his quality of life, above and beyond all else, and didn't want to sacrifice any of that for the terrible rigors of chemotherapy.

And he's at peace with that decision that he made last year, but that doesn't mean he liked reading a story about it like it was breaking news in a Montreal newspaper today.

And that is just one reason, amongst many, why so many of us in the hockey community think the world of Pat Burns.

Pat Burns' health worsens: reports

By QMI Agency

In April Burns was philosophical about his future, saying, "I know my life is nearing its end and I accept that." (REUTERS/Ray Stubblebine)

MONTREAL -– Former NHL coach Pat Burns has taken a turn for the worse, according to news reports.

The 58-year-old Montreal native has been fighting a battle with terminal lung cancer for a number of years. That battle, it appears, could end in the next few days.

Burns, who spends most of his time in Florida, has apparently returned to his home in the Quebec town of Magog and is surrounded by family.

The three-time winner of the Jack Adams trophy for coaching excellence made his last public appearance in March when the town of Stanstead, Que., announced it would build a new arena bearing his name. At the time, Burns made light of the fact he probably wouldn't be around to see the arena completed.

In April Burns was philosophical about his future, saying, "I know my life is nearing its end and I accept that."

Burns was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004 and liver cancer in 2005, the latter forcing him to retire from coaching. He revealed he had lung cancer in 2009.

On Thursday morning, Burns spoke with colleagues at a Montreal sports radio station. According to co-host Gabriel Gregoire, he didn’t complain about his health.

"He refuses to be pitied," Gregoire said on-air Thursday afternoon.

"He is being cared for and surrounded by extraordinary people. He smiles through life and has fun. He is happy at the moment."

Burns coached the Montreal Canadiens from 1988-92. He also coached the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. In 2003, he guided the Devils to a Stanley Cup win.

Magog and Stanstead are both in Quebec’s Eastern Townships region, near the U.S. border
