Hey,

I figure since it is nearing camping season I'd start a scary story thread to share stories for around the campfire. I have a few but I will wait until other people throw their hats into the ring before I get going.

I was just a lad in Worcester MA when I heard my first horrifying story. It was a story about a child stalker called 3 Finger Louis. His MO was to sneek into a childs room at night and abduct them. At one point of his career, he was confronted by a parent wielding a butcher knife which is how Louis lost two fingers, his tumb and little finger on his right hand. The story has it that he grew his finger nail long on his middle finger and used it to slice the throat of his victim. That story stayed with me through our move to NH, and one night I woke to the sound of scraping at my window. I forced open my tightly sealed eyes to take a peak in the direction of the grating noise. To my horrification, I saw what appeared to be a gloved hand with only three fingers, and it all came back to me even in my sleepy state. It was 3 Finger Louis coming into my bedroom to slice me open like a fish!. My brother and I shared a room at that age, and I being the older brother decided to save his life too.
I called out very quietly to my Bro, who's name just happens to be, did you guess it? Louis!
I called his name through a tightly closed throat in a sound like a shouted whisper so as not to alarm the assailant.
When he awoke, I instructed him that I was going to count to three, and when I got to three he was to run for his life.
Being about 7 & 8 yrs old, we didn't need much of an excuse to have the pants scared off us, so he agreed, I counted and when I got to three, the two of us flew from our bed to the narrow steep staircase that led downstairs to safety. We both hit the bottom floor before the sheets settled back onto the bed!
As I recounted the ordeal to my parents in a panic, they decided to go upstairs and check out the crime scene.
What we found was a hole in the screen just big enough for a hand to fit through, but what we also found was a trail of rat turds leading to the screen.
What I had heard was the rat trying to get out of the house, what I had seen, was the hind quarters and tail of the rat, that closely (at least for me) resembled a gloved hand with three fingers.
So my favorite scary story had a real life twist to it, but all a case of mistaken identity.

I do not believe in any supernatural occurences (although I struggle with the issue of whether or not to believe in the Curse of the Bambino). I do, however, have a sister who tells a first person account of an incident she had while living on the island of Oahu.

Ordinarily, I would dismiss any story told by someone I don't know as an Urban Legend. But whereas Janice is the best sister anyone ever had, I will recount her story, and allow you to do with it what you will.

Jan worked the late shift at the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu. One night on her way home from work, while driving along a seaside highway, she had to hit the brakes to avoid smashing into someone who was crossing the street in the middle of the night. The careless pedestrian was dressed in white robes and crossing from the inland side toward the ocean side of the highway. A little further up the road, there was another, similarly dressed person again crossing the street, again in the same direction.

This scene repeated itself throughout the ride home. The next day at the hospital where she worked, Jan mentioned this weird occurence to a co-worker who said something like "Oh, you take the Kananalioli Highway home?" Jan answered "Yes."

"That", answered her girlfriend,"is where people have been seeing ghosts crossing the road. When the road was put in, they moved the graves away from the shore, and the ghosts have been seen crossing back over the highway to where they were originally buried."

As I said, believe it as you see fit. But it is at least as believable as Bill Parcells and Jerry Jones saying how they want to work together.

:AlDavis: Bill & Jerry.....speaking of coming back from the dead.

Let's suppose that this is true for a moment. I'll do a little role playing here. I'm a ghost, and they moved my grave and I badly want to get back -- all the way across the road -- to my grave. Apparently they can only move graves, not supernatural beings, so they left me behind. "Now where the heck did I put that grave? It was here last night...?" I'm a guy -- it isn't like I can just ask directions -- so I wander for awhile looking purposeful.

How long can we expect this to take, worst case scenario? I'm graveless, and I just can't rest until I find it: a night, maybe two or three? Let's assume that I know where they moved it because I watched them.

So one way or the other I'm finally back at my final resting place. What a day, no sooner does my head hit the coffin than I am out. The next night, there I am again, crossing the road. Did I forget something? Perhaps I went back to get my slippers. Okay, then. Next night, there I am again, crossing the road. It is like watching Groundhog Day -- twice. Yep, that must be the only reasonable explanation. Case solved. Then again, your sister isn't into the Maui Wowi is she? ;)
