View Full Version : Anyone know anything about turtles and fish?

I have had a 20 gallon turtle aquarium for just over a year with a adult and baby red-eared slider turtles in it. It's a great set up for them- giant rock on one end of the tank for them to lie on and bask under the lamp if they choose, and the rest of the tank to swim in. Well, I would put some feeder fish and goldfish in there every once in a while to give em as treats. Turns out that 4 of the Goldfish have avoided getting chomped over the last year and are now HUGE. These things started out as regular goldfish and are now a good 6 inches long each; way too big for the turtle to even think about messing with anymore (I actually think they nip at his shell). A few days ago I put 10 more feeder fish in there and they were gone within 48 hours (It used to take a good week or 2 for them to all get eaten) and I don't think the turtles ate any of them; these fish are like crazy-ass pirhanas.

While me and my children find it amusing to watch the interaction between the turtles and Goldfish, should I give some consideration to taking out the borderline Koi? Will they eventually gang up on the turtles and take them out? (Not that it would be a huge issue to replace an adult Red-eared slider turtle for a whopping 14.99 at Petco or a baby turtle at the local chinese food restaurant). Can they co-exist peacefully or are my kids going to be traumatized by finding a half-shell with turtle guts inside of it one morning being pecked at by the killer goldfish?

Cmon people throw me a frikkin bone here.

One time when I was a kid I caught a few small turtles and some baby sunfish at a local pond. Took them home, dumped them in an aquarium and those turtles went medieval--killed all the sunfish within 60 seconds. Since then I kill turtles whenever I can. Cuz they're freaking evil.

Those fish are going to eat the turtles.

They will start to pick at them until their skin becomes raw and start to eat them. :harumph:

They are cute but when push comes to shove they are evil bastards

True but consider that his feeder fish have avoided death and have grown large. :fire: Payback is a bitch >)

I think you should arrange daily death matches between the turtles and fish. Either the kids will love it (cuz like adults, kids are messed up) or they'll be sickened by it (in which case the slaughter will provided some much needed toughening up). Regardless of the outcome tho, take a hammer to the turtles. It's more fun than water balloons.

I'd be more worried about water quality.

Four six inch long carp are awful big for a 20 gallon tank.

That could have an impact on the turtles faster than the fish eating them.

If you see the goldfish gulping air regularly, you'll know the tanks water has gone south.

I have this very funny friend in New Orleans. You name the weird shit that can/will happen, his name is all over it.

So, he's driving along and sees turtle in the road. He stops and picks up the poor guy. He's going to drop him off 5 miles up the road in an area that the beast will be safe. One mile to go, beast is in the passenger seat of a Jeep Wrangler bolting at 70mph. Beast wakes up, emerges, looks at driver and did a 4.0 dash to the driver's seat and this guy's member.

Well, the guy and his member decided that saving wildlife was highly overrated. The charging snapping turtle was hurled from the driver's side window, at 70 mph.

I'm sure someone in a trailer nearby made soup out of him. It was Louisina, afterall.

Neato:

The Axolotl (or ajolote) (Ambystoma mexicanum) is the best-known of the Mexican neotenic mole salamanders belonging to the Tiger Salamander complex. Larvae of this species fail to undergo metamorphosis, so the adults remain aquatic and gilled. The species originates from the lake underlying Mexico City. Axolotls are used extensively in scientific research due to their ability to regenerate most body parts, ease of breeding, and large embryos. They are kept as pets in the United States, Great Britain (under the spelling Axlotl), Australia, Japan (where they are sold under the name Wooper Rooper (ウーパールーパー, Ūpā Rūpā?)), and other countries.

Axolotls should not be confused with waterdogs, the larval stage of the closely related Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum and Ambystoma mavortium), widespread in much of North America, which also occasionally become neotenic, nor with mudpuppies (Necturus spp.), fully aquatic salamanders which are unrelated to the axolotl but which bear a superficial resemblance.

I know quite a bit about turtles and fish although I've never actually kept goldfish with turtles.

I wouldn't worry about the fish eating the turtles. Turtles are hard to eat, especially for a goldfish.

I'm not sure how healthy that aquarium sounds however. It's not clear to me how the turtles are surviving in a tank that must have a lot of water to house goldfish that are that big.

You did say 20 gallon tank right? how deep is the water? how many fish did you say you have? how big?

I've always gotten along well w/fish and turtles but my wife has not. My son had a little turtle he named Godzilla when he was about four. My wife fed it a huge piece of hamburger (against my advice) one night and we had a turtle funeral the next day.

My youngest daughter brought home a pet frog from first grade a few years ago. The thing is pretty big now two years later. The old first grade teacher asked my wife to take one of the new (still small) frogs off her hands. My wife put the new frog in the tank with the older frog (again against my advice) because she thought they would make good "friends." Well, w/in an hour we were back to there being only one frog in the tank. She had to explain to my daughter what happened to the baby frog.

Snake head no question.

I had one in a 120 gallon tank that got to four feet long.

I used to buy him shiners at the local bait shop. When I got rid of him (that is a story worth its own thread), the shop complained that he was their best customer.

Very strange fish. My wife used to play Carpenters for him and he really liked it.

The goldfish shouldn't pose a threat to the turtles. That's why they have shells.

But if it's getting too crowded in there, you should probably move the fish to another tank.

Found this while looking for my own fish thread.

Any update MHS? I'm assuming the goldfish killed themselves with their own filth by now, as usual?

Goldfish suck. They're big, dumb, brutish, and filthy. They're too stupid to be entertaining, they pick on other fish, and if they don't eat the other fish, they'll kill them (and themselves) by making the water in the aquarium so filthy that they get poisoned by their own excrement.
Re-reading the thread, I thought of a suggestion: take the goldfish, one at a time, out of the water and put them on the rocks. That way the turtles can eat them without having to take on all 4 of the monsters at once.

I'm guessing no. (I assume OPT knows better than that)

But that is one of the reasons why alot of lakes and rivers are now overrun with snake heads. It's also why fishermen are required to kill any they catch instead of releasing them.

They will quite literally take over an entire lake.

Since this thread got kicked up again, I guess I'll give an update-

Since the original post, my daughter got a Guinea Pig and Dog as pets......She lost all interest in the turtles and fish. I kept cleaning out the tank, but who was I doing it for?

The turtle/fish tank got moved to the laundry room....And then this past spring we all took the turtles to the local pond and gave them a send off. The tank got moved to the backyard, and whenever we catch the occasional frog or toad- in the tank they go!

They are an apex predator that will pretty much take over a fresh water system. They spawn like locusts and have no natural predators. Even if they don't eat the trout themselves, they will eat everything the trout eats, effectively pushing them out.

On the bright side though, they are apparently very good eating.

Who? The snakeheads? Good luck with that.

Their reproduction rate makes bunnies look like puritans.

Some places in florida have gone to such extremes that they electrocuted the entire water system (killing everything in it) to get rid of them (and then of course restock the lake)

The only Gin I have ever liked is Tanquerey. The other shit must've been cheap, cuz yuck. Or maybe I'm just gangsta?

I like rum, it's actually my drink of choice. But only the silver stuff.

Brandy, no. Maybe in egg nog. We bought some months ago to cure our bacon with and there it still sits. I can do a whiskey sour, but my faves are the rum and white tequila. I love that shit.

You know, I've never had it.

I've not had Gin too often in my life.

The only time I ever had the Tanq was back in the day when there was about 10 of us in the back of a van with no seats headed to the city and we were passing around a fifth and some chronic, lol. I remember thinking it was good  ROFL

This is the ONLY gin as far as I"m concerned, and it belongs in Martinis with just a touch of dry vermouth and a nice olive.
