THE 2003 GOD SHAMGOD AWARDS
For several years now, I've put together a pre-tourney team of the participating players with the funniest names. This year is no exception.
Named for the great URI guard of the mid 1990s, this team has gotten harder to produce in the last few years, as apparently the parents of 18-20 years ago got away from the truly silly names in favor of the more mundane "Antoines" and "Patricks" and the like (Oh, where have you gone, Duany Duany?)
The votes are once again tabulated by the accounting firm of Price/Waterhouse.
As always, obviously foreign sounding names don't qualify (sorry, Ugonna Onyekwe and Slobodan Ocokoljic!):
F: Lacedrick Pettway, Troy St.
F: Koko Archibong, Penn
G: Janavor Weatherspoon, OK St.
G: Winsome Frazier (Losesome?), Miss. St.
C: Beckham Wyrick, UNC-Wil
Sixth man: Sydmill Harris, TX
Special Bonus All-Body-Parts Team:
G: Luther Head, Ill
G: Collis Temple III, LSU
F: Brad Nuckles, E. Tenn St.
F: Zach Gourde, Gonzaga
C: Arthur Johnson, Mo.
It's not to late to get in your nominations, however all decisions of the committee (me) are final.

Very funny as always IGIG! Lacedrick would appear to be a clear favorite but I am going to have to go with:
Koko Archibong
Partly due to his name, but mostly due to loyalty to my Alma Mater (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney03/teamPage?collegeId=219), the amazing and beautiful University of Pennsylvania! Seeded 11th in the East no less! Go Quakers!
I think you have to give my BELOVED Quakers the "All-Team Funny Name" honors -- foreign-name rules aside. Who can match the front court pairing of Ugonna Onyekwe and Koko Archibong along with center Adam Chubb and guard Andrew Toole?
In tribute, part of one of the fight songs, and my favorite, that they still sing at games.
"The Red and Blue"
Come all ye loyal classmen now
In hall and campus through,
Lift up your hearts and voices
For the Royal Red and Blue
Fair Harvard has her crimson
Old Yale her colors too,
But for dear Pennsylvania
We wear the Red and Blue.
Hurrah, hurrah Pennsylvania!
Hurrah for the Red and the Blue!
Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah, hurrah,
Hurrah for the Red and Blue!
This is the bldg where I spent much of my time in college, the Furness Building. As seniors, just before graduation and while preparing for our final projects, we climbed the tower and flew a banner for our major above the tower. Our department was located in the building. I still have the actual picture somewhere of our banner flying above the main quadrangle.
Go Quakers!
I can't in good faith, not also give a nod to the Vermont Catamounts who are also in the NCAA tourney. I would love to see a matchup of Quakers and Cats but that would mean they make the Final four so that isn't happening.
Poor Cats, chose to fly into Denver in March....Ouch. Denver in March is know for serious weather just like that although that was a storm even by Colorado standards. They are predicting as much as eight feet of snow in the foothills. Five feet has already fallen in some areas.
Good luck Vermont! Don't beat my Quakers but I am still pulling for you.
For Peg:
Peg, Vermont and Arizona are underway. Tied 7-7 right now.
...What is it now?!...
I just got in, from being on the road for a couple of days and I can't seem to get the game!...
I am dying to know the scoop!...
What say ye?!... -Desperate Peg :)

Peg,
Think of it this way, it was a great accomplishment just making the tournament. The got beat 80-51. However, they faced a team favored by some to win it all. They are also returning all but two seniors and getting their best playmaker back from injury for two more years so they should be better next year and beyond.
:)
... I had to leave again, right after I posted that last reply, so thanks for the update... :)
From what I had read from my UVM "Dateline" email message, our TEAM was just really pleased to be playing... It was the first time in the 102 (or three?) years of bball at UVM that we had made it this far... That, in and of itself, was a MAJOR accomplishment!... :)
So, I am a very happy camper!! :)
All in all, it has been a pretty decent year for sports for my alma mater, UVM... :)
Given that there are VERY few athletic scholarships or grants given out to students at UVM, I honestly believe that we have been pretty darn competititve, given the size or our school. As far as I know, we have NEVER had any kind of scandals associated with my school and for that I am very proud... Rock on, my fellow UVMers & my fellow Pats fans! -Peg :)
p.s.--I haven't heard how our Hockey TEAM is doing, though! :)
I heard from my postmaster that BOTH the mens and womens hockey teams had won at Dartmouth, though... Can anyone enlighten me, please?! :) Freak? FallingAlice? NoRespect?
