The Herald is reporting this morning that McGinest will sign a new deal which will shave nearly $8 million off the salary cap. Go here for the full article: http://www2.bostonherald.com/sport/patriots/pats02262003.htm

Also, the article warns of salary cap issues with our high priced defensive backfield. We can thank Bobby Grier for this upcoming headache.

As I recall, Felger is wrong on one point. I believe Milloy's contract was done under Belichick's tender. He only inherited Law's deal.

As for the high priced defensive backfield... Any new news on the T. Jones dealings? Besides that he seems to have been stifled by his agent?

Nothing new lately. I assume the parties will be talking behind the scenes. The Pats like to keep negotiations quiet. Since he's been tagged, I'm not sure if there's any urgency to complete things immediately.

When are other teams allowed to start making offers? They have to exceed the franchise number of 3.0something mil, so when does this traditionally start to take place?

I'm not sure of all the rules. I believe that all teams must be below the salary cap by Friday, Feb 28. The free agency period begins the following day on March 1. I'm sure if I'm wrong, someone will correct me on this.

That article also talks about Ted Johnson restructuring again as well as Anthony Pleasant. This is good news short term. But those salary cap numbers for the defensive backfield in the next 2 years are pretty staggering. 22% of the total cap??!!!??? Yikes.
