The mock drafts are starting to come in. Last week, PFW had the Pats taking DT Kevin Williams and RB Larry Johnson. Here's SI's initial prediction:

14. Marcu Trufant CB Washington St.

The first of two No. 1s for New England, this is the choice from last year's Drew Bledsoe trade. Bill Belichick will look to shore up the No. 23 defense, so a defensive lineman to team with Richard Seymour is another option. Look for the best defender available to come off the board here.

19. Larry Johnson RB PennSt.

The first running back to come off the board, Johnson could give New England a feature back to pound with and help squeeze the clock in the Patriots' ball-control offense. Antowain Smith had only one 100-yard game last season and now's the time to find a replacement.

Couple of interesting observations. SI doesn't even have Kevin Williams in the 1st round. Who's off here, SI or PFW. Both mock drafts have the Pats going after Johnson. Still not a priority in my opinion. SI also speculates that the Pats may trade one of these picks for extra picks.

It's kinda funny, but almost every mock draft I have seen has had the Patriots taking Larry Johnson. Personally, I am growing fond of the idea. Grab the top defensive lineman on the board, sure up your linebackers through free agency, and draft another defensive back.
