I think I liked the troll better when he did nothing but bust balls by insulting Belichick or the Pats.

Is there some reason why, for the past few months, almost every friggin' post has to mention his heritage? Greek this, Greek that, Greek the other thing.

We used to have OldLimeyBastard... Maybe a mod should change his name to OldZorbaBastard. :coffee:

YOU KNOW YOU'RE GREEK WHEN...
1. You say that you will never work for a greek, But you end up working for
one anyway.

2. You've had an older member of the Greek community say to you " Tha se
fao" when you get out of line.

3. Your parents insist that Olympic airways is a first class airline.

4. You believe that another Greek will lie for you in any situation.

5. Every wall in you parents house is offwhite.

6. You know who Stathi Psaltis is.

7. Upon meeting an Italian you point out the fact that "poutana" means the
same thing in both Italian and Greek.

8. It's crossed your mind to get personalized license plates that say
"MANGAS".

9. Just because you meet a new Greek person you think you should act like
you've known each other for years.

10.You feel you have to use a capital "G" every time you spell the word
Greek.

11.You've been told "tha fas xsilo"

12.When asked your favorite sexual position you reply with "apo piso".

13.You have more relatives than old classmates.

14.Whenever someone brings up wealthy people like Bill Gates, you have to
mention Onasis.

15.Even if you were to come home before midnight on a saturday, your mom
would still ask "pou eisouna mehri tetia ora".

16.Even though you had a bacon and egg breakfast on sunday morning, you tell
your mom that you didn't eat anything so she won't yell at you and say you
can't take communion.

17.You point out everytime you see a Greek last name on movie credits.

18.Your mom constantly reverses the names of places or T.V. shows. e.g. Hut
Pizza or Fortune Wheel.

19.When ever talking about the olympics whith xsenous you have to point out
that they originated in Greece.

20.You find it odd when there's no open bar at a wedding.

21.You have used the word loukaniko to describe your poutso.

22.You know that a bousouki is not just a weird looking guitar.

23.Your mom can hit you with a wooden pandofla by throwing it from 50 yards
away.

24.The attendance at your wedding was or will be higher than the population
of some small countries.

25.You have been called "gaidare" by your mom.

Tell her this:
ο ανεμιστήρας της ομάδας του χάλυβα είναι άριστος

Phonetics: O anemistiras tis omathas tou haliva eeneh aristos

Actually, anemistiras is probably wrong in this context, but translated literally she'll know what you mean.

Here's what I know about Greeks:

their alphabet
Onassis
Zorba
Fred Smerlas
Melina Kanekerides (sp?) from "CSI: NY"
feta cheese, olives, pizza

We actually had a cool film about Greece, narrated by the woman who did "My Big Fat-Ass Wedding" or whatever that film was called...

Personally, I love Greeks. They can get wild with their tempers but they get over it.
Besides we Sicilians are similar and probably have some Greek in us—so they say.
Worked in a Greek restaurant in art school and one of by best friends is Greek. Picked up a bunch of phrases.
She still speaks Greek to her mom who speaks no English. Loved the Greek isles!

I consider the EU to be a temporary situation. Greece will use the EU as long as it is beneficial, and when it is no longer needed, Greece will secede.

Retsina is good. Never had it with coke though. I'll have to try that.

and then after they secede and need to be bailed out by the EU they will um what

The whole secession thing is contingent on Greece being in a solid enough position that there is little left to gain from the EU. Both economically and militarily, because IMO one of the reasons Greece is in the EU is to have European support if there's any problems with Turkey. I also think an important factor will be the status of countries like Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria, who I think are more natural allies of Greece due to the common Orthodox and Byzantine heritage.
The ultimate goal of Greece was, and IMO should still be, not to be Europe's bitch, but to be a leader in the region once again.

I did a quick look and it said Arabs started making spirits and wines. Around the 1800s the Turks had started using aniseed making a drink they called "raki" Then it was Tsipouro and eventually changed to Ouzo. Either way looks like they both came up with it at the same time.

http://www1.american.edu/TED/ouzo.htm

A Short History
Ouzo has its roots in Byzantine (eventually Ottoman then Turkish) origin dating back to the 1600's. Distillation of spirits and wines began in the Arab world. People added sugar to wine residue to produce a drink similar to present day grappa. Eventually the Turks began infusing and processing the residue with aniseed which gave the liquor its distinct Turkish characteristic, the flavor of licorice. The origin of the name ouzo is a bit murky. The drink itself derives its origins from a Turkish drink called raki . Originally the drink was called "Tsipouro" but through a series of contested events, the name was changed t Ouzo. , In 1800's the Greeks shipped the first cases of their aniseed drink tsipouro to Marseille. They were also exporter of fine cocoons at this time and marked the cases "uso a Marsilla" (Italian for Use in Marseilles ) to distinguish the products. According to legend, a Turkish physician named Anastas Bey was visiting the town of Tyrnavos and asked to try the local tsipouro. After tasting the drink, he exclaimed "This is uso Marsilla, my friends"-referring to the high quality. The name spread by word of mouth until eventually ouzo replaced the name tsipouro. (1)

That's like a typical night with the fam lol But it's mostly me arguing with my dad on how close minded he is. I push my parents as far as I can. I brought a guy to meet them that had piercings and this long gotee. My dad flipped and I laughed at him and said that's the kind of man I am going to bring home to you. Then I told my mom that I will most likely be a mother before I am a wife IF I ever decide to be a wife.

Gotta get them out of their old school ways somehow

And Babs has a great fix for the drain!

Claremonster

And Babs has a great fix for the drain!

Fix:

late 14c., probably from O.Fr. *fixer, from fixe "fixed," from L. fixus, pp. of figere "to fix, fasten," from PIE base *dhigw- "to stick, to fix." Earliest Eng. usage was to "fix" one's eyes or mind on something; sense of "fasten, attach" is c.1400; that of "settle, assign" is pre-1500 and evolved into "adjust, arrange" (1660s), then "repair" (1737). Sense of "tamper with" (a fight, a jury, etc.) is 1790. As euphemism for "castrate a pet" it dates from 1930. Related: Fixed; fixedly; fixing. The noun meaning "a position from which it is difficult to move" is first recorded 1816, Amer.Eng., from the verb. Meaning "dose of narcotic" is from 1934, originally fix-up, which dates from 1867 in reference to liquor.

Drain:

O.E. dreahnian, from P.Gmc. *draug-, source of "drought, dry," giving the English word originally a sense of "make dry." Figurative meaning of "exhaust" is attested from 1650s. Related: Drained; draining. The noun is from 1550s.

Great:

O.E. great "big, coarse, stout," from W.Gmc. *grautaz (cf. O.S. grot, O.Fris. grat, Du. groot, Ger. groß "great"). Originally "big in size, coarse," it took over much of the sense of M.E. mickle, and is now largely superseded by big and large except for non-material things. As a prefix to terms denoting "kinship one degree further removed" (1538) it is from the similar use of Fr. grand, itself used as the equivalent of L. magnus. An O.E. way of saying "great-grandfather" was þridda fæder, lit. "third father." In the sense of "excellent, wonderful" great is attested from 1848. Great White Way "Broadway in New York City" is from 1901. Greatcoat "large, heavy overcoat" is from 1661. Great Spirit "high deity of the North American Indians," 1703, originally translates Ojibwa kitchi manitou. The Great War originally (1887) referred to the Napoleonic Wars, later (1914) to what we now call World War I

Long live Flaminius!

True fact: in the 2nd century BC, the Spartans turned Sparta into one of the world's earliest tourist traps.

I know Sparta was a big tourist destination for Romans, since they thought the Spartan way of life was interesting and cool. But how much did the Spartans cultivate that tourism intentionally? They don't seem like the kind of people who would have enjoyed being looked at by tourists as an interesting curiosity.

My only connection to Hellas is my love of Homer and Greek grilled seafood but Zito H Ellas and Eleftheria H Thanatos to you too.

Thanks Tim! Any connection is enough justification to have some ouzo in celebration.
