View Full Version : Go Cleveland!!! Third and One, We Got None!
Did anyone see the segment on ESPN on the Brown's offensive line? They had t-shirts made up about the "turning point" in their season -- about a running play that got stuffed. The shirts say simply, "third and one, we got none." Hysterical! I really like these guys.
Anyway for any underdog fans out there, you can't do better than the DAWGs. I like their chances, well not really, but that's why I am rooting for them...
Go Browns!

Can you believe that game? Damn, I thought the Browns were going to put them away. Talk about throwing the deep ball, sheesh. He made more long completions in the first half than Brady did all year. I liked the Browns aggressiveness but.....
I thought at one point that Cleveland had it won and we were going to have to listen to the Pitt fans blame their special teams AGAIN.

I can sink any bandwagon. I was really hoping they would be my surrogate team. Any requests? I jump on a bandwagon and the team immediately senses the futility and collapses. Maybe the Giants...
Yeah, Holcomb has something that Brady does not and that is TOUCH. Brady is just gunning too many balls. When you throw with the velocity that he does everybody has to be that much better. Holcomb was throwing a nice touch pass that gets the job done. Brady needs to develop some touch. Bring back the the fade route -- and bring back the damn screen pass!!!
Pennington in my opinion has a good touch pass by necessity. He can't throw the fastball and I believe that the success that he is having will be short lived. His success next season will be inversely proportional to his success this season once teams start to study some film.
I know your opinion of the Pats coaching staff and you know mine. Regarding the absence or presence of arrogance in the downfall of the Pats I have this to add -- they went one too many seasons without a QB coach!

I CAN NOT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST WITNESSED IN THE G-MEN GAME!! Ugggghhhhhh! 24 point second half lead, not good enough. The first missed field goal, ah fuggedaboudit... But that last feeble field goal attempt was horrifying. It was a 41 yarder for Chrissake and they couldn't even 1) Get the ball from the center to the holder properly 2) At least get the ball down for an attempted kick (this was probably the right move anyway) or 3) Spike the damn ball into the ground on 3rd down with 3 or 4 seconds left to try what would have been a considerably longer, but makeable 47 or 48 yarder!
Here's a couple new Pookie facts:
- I love Shockey! He is an NFL stud and should be traded to the Patriots stat!
- Prior to today, I hated Terrell Owens, as he is the epitomy of everything that is wrong with the NFL. I now believe that T.O. is the Anti-Christ and was hoping that Shockey would kick his cocky ass after the outcome of the game (that's poor sportsmanship, but I don't care, I hate that loser).
- Yukky cough medicine should never be administered to a 4 year old after a coughing attack and subsequent bowl of ice cream. The ice cream was Mom's idea, but my sofa and I were the lucky recipients of the colorful aftermath!
Good evening.

For the record I now am rooting for Oakland AND Tampa. They never see it coming...Man the lifeboats, women and children first.
I agree Pookie. Shockey is without a doubt my favorite exPatriot. And Owens is the worst thing that has ever happened to...I mean, I like Owens and I am glad that he has avoided any painful season-ending injuries.
Doesn't that cocky jerk just make you wish someone would pick him up by the neck and shake him until you feel better? I am just surprised that someone hasn't hit him with a cheap shot already.

Oh goody! You're rooting for Oakland and Tampa..... They're done!
And your love for our friend Owens ought to land him on the IR soon. May his pubic area be infested by the crabs of a thousand seas!

Lonnie Paxton, for MVP. And his only competition is from Adam Vinatieri. We take it for granted that a SNAP and resulting KICK is going to end in a successful field goal. Some teams can hope for a successful field goal attempt. Some can't even say that.
Trey Junkin: veteran long snapper and tight end for the Giants, signed a week ago. Those are two plays that he will remember for a very long time. I feel bad for him.

Yep, that poor guys is now doomed for all eternity along with Scott Norwood, diagnosed with BillBucknerosis.
I did learn afterward that spiking the ball would not have been a legal play on that FG. How 'bout just tossing it out of bounds? How about just crashing into the line then calling the 1 timeout that they had remaining?

My understanding is that there were 8 seconds left ( I think) and the holder would have had to field the snap, get up from his crouch, get outside the hashmarks and then heave it out of bounds or take an intentional grounding penalty which would probably have pushed them out of field goal range. I don't pretend to understand why he couldn't just spike it like a QB does all the time but that's what they're saying on local Sports radio. I really don't know the rules that well.
If true then that would be a lot of action for 8 seconds. The problem with running the ball is that D's are coached (or should be) not to touch the guy with the ball in those kind of situations until the clock has wound down.
I feel badly for Trey Junkin. There was a guy that should have stayed retired. When you get to my stage of life you start rooting for the old buzzards. Just last week he was quoted as saying something like "hey, who ever lost a game from a bad snap?" We know the answer now, but in fairness to him that kick might have been missed anyway. One thing this weekend highlighted was just how valuable it is to have an Adam Vinatieri.

Hawg,
While the part about the coaching of the D not to touch the guy is true, he could have rammed himself into the line, hit the dirt and called the T.O.
Also, did you visit the link I posted just below. The league is now admitting that it was a total blown call by the refs to begin with, go figure. They stated that it should have been interference, as the intended receiver (#69) was an eligible receiver. Even though there was another ineligible player downfield, it should have been offsetting penalties and a final, untimed play should have taken place. Wow, I guess that means that the Giants fans can start acting like Raider fans now!!?
Hey, Pook--
I did check out that link you posted, so thanks for sharing, as it was pretty enlightening! (It is kinda sweet that you can simply click on a link here and not have to do any of that damn cutting & pasting crap...) Thank you PatriotsPlanet! :)
The end of the Giants/SF game was kind of bizarre... I truly expected there to be a review of the play from upstairs, as it were... When in any doubt, they should at least go back and look at it, especially when it makes the difference in who the winner is! Although it was screwed up, I am glad that SF won, rather than the Giants... You give up that much of a lead & ya don't deserve to continue on in the play-offs... Besides, I've had a soft spot for San Fran ever since Joe Montana played there... (sighhhh...) They are a quality organization and the way I see it, the best thing that the Giants have going for them is Jason Sehorn's gorgeous good looks! YEOW! I know that Shockey became an instant play-maker for them, but there is something that frightens me about that dude! Truly!... Madly!... Deeply!...

Very good point about replaying the last play just on the general principal of how bizarre it was and how fast it happened.
I can't be a 49er fan because they have Beulzebub, the gangsta, wanna be, ought to have a drug test, Terrell Owens....but Montana was fantastic.
Shockey is a stud and I know I'm not the only guy that likes his crappy attitude! I believe that he is and certainly will be one of the biggest bad-ass tight ends to hit the NFL since...... well, since Mark Bavaro. After one of Shockey's receptions Sunday, did you see the way that he went after the defensive end from San Fran (#93) that had dropped back in coverage, but hadn't a prayer? That's football!!! He waited until he had the ball in his hands, then tried to exact some justice on a guy bigger than he was....
I have no use for Terrell "Sharpie" Owens, either, but I'll be damned if I'll let one show-boater ruin a whole team for me... It actually took me awhile to get over Montana's leaving for KC and not being in a position to finish his career in SF... I know that this is a big business, but sheesh, that kind of thing should be a crime! I hate the fact that the days of a player beginning & ending his career with a single team are over... That is why the loyalty factor is largely missing in the game now-a-days... (Ooh, boy--I'm becoming one of those crotchety-elders that is preaching about the "good old days" when I was a kid!...) Oh, well--as I recall--I AM four years your elder!! LOL! :)
As far as Shockey--I totally agree with you that he's going to be a serious force to be reckoned with in the NFL, but mark my words, Sonny Boy--He's going to get into some sort of trouble before it is through... There is just something in his eyes that tells me that... I'm not shittin' you here... He gives me the creeps! Truly!...
I wonder if the Giants' fans will whine about the poor officiating, like the faider fans did last year?! In THIS case, they would actually have something to complain about!

You know Pook I feel for the Giants but the reality is it is time for people to start accepting responsibility for their actions and not looking for an excuse. The Giants lost that game for a number of reasons:
1. You bring on a veteran long-snapper out of retirement and the snapper botches not one but two snaps. I feel for a guy who ends his career on such a down note but it was his job. The responsibility rests with the player -- and the coaches who hired and trained the player.
2. Your field goal kicker misses what would have been the game winning 42 yard field goal by about 25-30 yards to the left. What did he say about it?
"It's very frustrating,'' Bryant said. "I can't even begin to tell you how frustrating. I've gone through five or six snappers and two holders. It's been strange this year. Probably, what's most frustrating of all is that I didn't get a chance.''
He didn't get a chance...how sad. The 42 yarder -- was that a chance? The snap was bad but don't you practice bad snaps? Don't you get paid to kick FIELD GOALS for a living? It isn't like your kick JUST missed. You missed by a margin of error two to three times greater than the size of the target.
3. The holder "warning" the kicker to expect another bad snap? Assuming that even happened and wasn't just another attempt to deflect responsibility -- totally unacceptable. Note to self: "New Holder".
4. How about the Giants defense? Maybe if they had only given up the final TWENTY FOUR points in the game instead of twenty five the game would have been tied.
5. The Giants offense. Anyone home?
6. And lastly, let's put some responsibility where it ultimately rests -- the coaches. Jim Fassel on the officiating that COST him the game: "How they missed that, I don't know."
How they missed it? How about how WE missed it. Fassel should have known he was an eligible receiver -- he put him there and instructed him to report to the officials as such before the game.
I have coached (and officiated) soccer and I can say this -- as I coach I knew the rules better than anyone on the field. Why? Because it was part of my job. (And I did it for the love of the game and I got paid a stipend which didn't begin to cover the time away from my real job.)
Kerry Collins gets it: "It was just complete and utter shock,'' Collins said. "It shouldn't have come down to that. That's the bottom line and we have only ourselves to blame for that.''
Just like the Raiders last year, the Giants lost that game. Not the officials.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly with you NR on the fact that the game should have never come to that point.... And that the Giants blew it completely. Everyone from the kicker, to the snapper to Fassel. But the difference between last year's (and on-going on patriots.com) Raiders bawling and this year's Giants debacle is that the Raiders were wrong. The Giants should have at least been given a 2nd chance to screw that kick up again, which they very well may have done. But, truly you are correct in that their total TEAM meltdown brought them to that point in which one call was allowed to cost them the game.

It's a funny thing, Pook, but I was okay with the departure of Dafoe (assuming of course, that the B's were going to go out and sign a goalie who CAN win more than one playoff series in a span of six years.)
But silly, silly me. How was I to know that the B's brain-trust were going to rely on Graham and Steve Shields? Steve Shields? You gotta be kidding me. As I recall there were like 4 - 6 real playoff-calibre goalies at the end of last season during the great goalie purge. Everyone knew CuJo was going to Detroit, but ...they could've gone after somebody.
But Guerin...man that hurt. I knew the writing was on the wall once the Rangers paid a king's ransome for Bobby Holik. Bobby Holik? (I ask myself another rhetorical question here) Bobby freaking Holik???? Sometimes I think the Rangers do more harm to hockey with their free-spending than the Yankees do to baseball. At least the Yankees spend wisely.
I just knew that the price on Guerin would go way up and the B's wouldn't match it.
I know Alice... It's awful living here in Big D and having to hear the pseudo hockey fans talk about their Bill Guerin. I want to slap their lips off.
Holik? You kiddin' me? Look what their payroll has gotten the Rangers. Then look at the team that can't make their payroll, the Sens....hmmmm, what's wrong with this league. But what peeves me is that B's have the dough. Sinden's not broke. We're not the Senators and we still won't shell out the dough. I'm afraid to see what's going to happen when Joe and Serge come up for free agency. I knew that the amazing B's start wouldn't last forever, but this recent slide is worst than most and it usually doesn't come until some time in March/April. This losing streak worries me, but I'm thinking maybe it's a good thing to get this out of their system now.... Then I think about our goalie committee of Shields (there's an oxymoron) and Graham. Eeek!
