Man...does that suck! Well, do the Pats look for another RB or does Chad Jackson come back and add depth to the 5 WR set offense? The Pats could canvass the league for lower teams in need of picks to get a sturdy backup RB or do they keep handing to Evans and Eckel when Maroney needs a blow?

When I first heard the extent of Morris' injury I was worried this would be the ultimate decision.

The Pats are fine at RB, as long as Maroney remains healthy. Faulk can provide spot relief on passing plays, and Evans will probably get the majority of short-yardage handoffs. I haven't seen anything from Eckel that suggest he deserves anything but garbage-time PT as a RB.

Sucks, b/c Morris IMO would have been major weapon against the Colts with his pounding style.

Crap. Guess our running game this weekend will look like this:

1) Moss
2) Stallworth
3) Welker
4) Watson
5) Faulk
6) Maroney

this was a consumate patriot. the exact type of guy that bb looks for in a running back. someone who wont dance and just hit the hole. maroney is starting to understand that now after some time on the bench. the pats are fine at rb. everyone needs to calm down, but it sucks for a sammy. get well soon.

Maroney is still the Pats' best back. He has skills Morris just wasn't born with. Now he's just got to keep himself on the field. :banghead:

FWIW, now that I see K Brady and Watson back at practice, I think Maroney has a BIG game this weekend.

I noted it after one of the first games. Maroney was timid hitting the hole, while Morris hit it at full steam. Until Maroney loses that I'd have started Morris every game. But Maroney has more potential. This is a bad loss.

Maybe they'll try Vrabel as RB.

Make one long post about pizza and all hell breaks loose! This SUX! And no, we are not fine at RB. We were fine at RB for the short term, to get through the bye week. But we are not fine for the cold winter months. Sammy is a solid, one cut and hit the hole kind of runner that this team needs in the cold and snow. Damn.

Until he applies the skills that he has I cannot call him the best back, with brady making it rain out there on the field maroney should be racking up yards at an alarming rate, but he is not.

Very sorry - but not surpised - that Morris was IR'd. Getting your entire chest pulverized is not exactly a nosebleed. At least it is not career-ending.

As to Dillon coming back - not gonna happen. He was not the same back last year anyway - MAJOR DROP OFF from his 1st year in NE.

Dillon got what he wanted from us - the chance to take his huge talent outta Cincy to a team with a chance at a championship - and we got what we wanted from him: someone NOT Antowain Smith. Mission accomplished on both sides.

I don't see this making the slightest difference in Sunday's outcome. Nuclear war, maybe; missing running back - nah.

Hi OBF! I agree on everything, 'cept the fact that late in the season (not this weekend), we are going to need a fast, yet more powerful back than Maroney. Cleary Dillon is not it any more. But where does the team turn?

Hi back, SS!

There are so many imponderables b/n Sunday and "late in the season" there's really no sense in even speculating yet. Who knows, by that time, all other teams may be so intimidated by the Juggernaut that is the Patriots they will simply forfeit their games one by one. Strange things are happening in the NFL this year. Never before seen things. Why not this? Simply roll over before kickoff and avoid the humiliation of an actual blowout?

We could go 16 - oh after next week and never take the field again!!! :Pat: ROFL

I still say no. I personally think that there were behind the scenes things going on that led to the NE/Dillon split. I don't think he was coming back whether he asked to be released or not.

Funny you should say that. I too thought something was up - - based on absolutely nothing more than a hunch. I felt Dillon was much surlier and more curmudgeonly on the sidelines last year. He wasn't yipping it up like he did the first 2 years. Didn't seem as "boyish." [uh oh - i approach the "reading body language" booby trap!]

My take - based on zero facts (why should I be better than most sportswriters?) - is that Dillon began to bridle under BB's reins and tight control. Whatever else can be said, both of those men have BIG EGOS and are CONTROL FREAKS. Over time, there was bound to be conflict. Dillion is obviously a man who doesn't like to be told what to do - - and BB insists on NO EXCEPTIONS from his players to his "I'm In Charge Here" rule.

But whatever - Dillon doesn't owe NE doo doo. And we don't want the old coot back. IMO

Despite missing a significant portion of training camp, and a 3-game stretch in the middle of the season to-date, he's tied for 7th in the league at 4.8 ypc (for backs with 70+ carries), and has averaged over 5 ypc in 4 of the 5 games he's played.

Let's face it: Maroney's job is to keep the defense honest. He's not going to be the focal point in too many games this year with this passing attack, but should become more prominent as the weather begins to turn south.

The reason Morris looked more impressive barrelling into and over opponents is partly to do with the fact he's 1/2 step slower to the hole.

From Chris Gasper:

http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2007/11/03/patriots_lose_morris_for_rest_of_season/

Original estimates had Morris returning after next week's bye, but the Patriots elected to open a spot on the 53-man roster. According to a league source, the team planned to activate cornerback Eddie Jackson, who was on the physically unable to perform list following a torn ACL last season.

This post could also apply to the Dillon thread here ---> http://www.patriotsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26875&pagenumber=3

JD10367
11-03-2007, 12:57 PM
That makes no sense. If Morris truly was able to return after next week's bye, I'm sure that's what the team would've done. I doubt they would've "elected" to activate Eddie "Who?" Jackson in favor of having Morris around for the second half of the season. Methinks they got a late report that said Morris's injury was worse than thought; there's no other reason they'd IR him with half a season to go, not given what his production had been so far.
