OK we seem to be on a movie and tv show kick today.

While I have never in my life had the slightest interest in high school football or watched a hs game, I found myself watching the premier of this show the other night for lack of better viewing options.

Liked it well enough that I will keep tabs on it and watch at least another couple episodes to see if it will lose me or not.

I watched it mainly because there isn't much on on tuesdays. For that reason alone I'll probably be catching it every week. Wasn't great but didn't suck. Kinda like the movie I guess. ;)

I used to travel quite a bit in Texas (all over - even west Texas.) There is nothing bigger than High School football to the people of west Texas.

Well that and gun racks...

I watched it as well. Pretty good production, but they stuck to the formulas and cliches a bit much. I mean, once they spent the second early scene exploring the personality of the second string quarterback, you just knew how the whole episode was going to go...

Apparently it flopped in the ratings. Did seem too formula-ic for me.

Something tells me every week there will be some sort of insane comeback or whatever that will make the Kardiac Kids seem normal.

(And why the hell is Friday Night Lights on Tuesday?)

My guess is that they want the people from Texas to watch it and they are a little bit busy on friday nights.

I caught Friday Night Lights for the first time ever on The101 which is DirecTV’s own network channel. They started season 3 last Wednesday night and I’m pissed I didn’t watch this show before then. I am now hooked after just one episode, can’t wait for the next episode tomorrow night.

Any one else watching this on The101 on DirecTV?

'Friday Night' gets two-season pickup NBC, DirecTV pact on football drama

It's official: NBC and DirecTV have come to terms on a two-season, 26-episode pickup of "Friday Night Lights."
Deal calls for the Imagine TV/Universal Media Studios drama skein to continue through a fourth and fifth season of 13 episodes each. As they did this season, "Friday Night Light's" third, DirecTV will get the first shot at airing the segs commercial-free before they bow on NBC. The negotiations between the Peacock and DirecTV hit a roadblock last week but ultimately resumed and the agreement was reached today.

Reps for NBC could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

I was thinking if this series goes on “which now we know it is” it’s going to be a great underdog story being told because of how season 3 ended. And it sounds like we who have DirecTV will be seeing it first once again with out commercials.

Just a plug for a great show.

I had my doubts when this season started and thought it might be time to jump the shark, but all doubts have been erased and they've done a nice job of keeping the core characters involved and introducing some interesting new ones.

The young hot-shot QB J.D. , his overbearing dad and his milfesque mom (Janine Turner) have turned out to be a welcomed addition to the show.

If you never watched it, then do yourself a favor and rent season 1 through Netflix or something. It is an outstanding show that I look forward to every week. Plus it helps with the offseason football fix. You're welcome.

It's got (quality) football action, hotties (all ages), compelling storylines and the best instrumental theme song on TV (Ry Cooder). It's escapism, but believable escapism. I hope like hell it carries on because it is better than 95% of anything else on these days.

Ken Howard (aka the White Shadow) partcipates in a charity auction I work every year and I had a chance to to say hello to him last year. I told him I loved the show, but I was still a little pissed about the time he benched Coolidge for getting in a fight with Salami and that in my opinion Salami was pretty much asking for it.

He responded with a polite chuckle and that I remembered more about it than he did. Good guy.

He also did a bang-up job as Tip O'Neill in a one-man play I saw last year but he will always be the WS to me.

OK. Now that the final episode has aired on NBC, I can finally discuss the qualms I've had with this show since the fall when it was on DTV.

1. The coach being replaced. Seriously? He wins the state title, then loses on the last play 2 years later, and is replaced? 2 of his 3 years he's been in the state title game, in the craziest football state in America (the craziest town, too, we're led to believe) and they let him get run? Please.

2. The concept of the "hot shot" freshman QB. Sorry. This isn't college ball. While there are some good freshman HS QBs, for sure, they don't come with all sorts of accolades as "program savers" from day one. They're 14. That is a joke.

3. The fact that Saracen got benched for the kid. Again...a guy who wins a state title AS A SOPHOMORE, is the leader of your team, and playing great ball is benched for a true freshman? After he leads a gutsy comeback and falls a yard short?

4. The whole "installing the spread offense in the middle of the year" thing. Right. They installed a highly refined offense in one week. In high school. What the f***? Someone get DickRod on the phone, because it worked at Dillon High.

5. The thought that Smash would lose his schollie to that po-dunk ass school that took him after TMU ditched him. He was allegedly the TV equivalent of a Rivals Top 100 prospect. In context, that's like Grambling telling Bryce Brown "no thanks" because he had a knee injury. Again, not gonna happen. Also, the concept that he would've lost the schollie to TMU in the first place is a joke, too. Or that 'Bama, etc. wouldn't take him. Just see the Willie Williams recruitment saga.

Do you remember Bill Russell hosting Saturday Night Live during that era? He did a hilarious spoof of White Shadow, playing a black coach of an all white HS basketball team. He'd do things like steal the players' wallets from their lockers while they were in the shower..

The tag line was something like "Black Shadow...Coach gets himself in trouble, the players bail him out."

From a logical/football standpoint, you are probably right that there are some strange doings down in Dillon. I'm not saying the entire show makes perfect sense, but after watching the last two episodes of the season last night I'm going to repeat my claim that it is a very good show because everyone associated with it does a good job making you care what happens to the characters and does not often resort to cookie-cutter cliches like most of the stuff on TV does.

As the cameras panned around at the wedding you could see everybody and reflect on their various situations and to me, at least, it seemed like a pretty real place. It struck me that the show isn't really about football as much as it is about hope and redemption.

Everybody gets smacked down and everybody tries hard to get back up again and usually makes it, although never the way it was drawn up on the big chalkboard of life. Much like in football the theme is "don't quit".

Street, Smash, the Coach, Tyra, Riggins....all of them really have gone through an arc along the way. The only thing that didn't really make sense was Sarazen deciding not to go to Art School to take care of Grandma, although if I was his age and had a chance to hit Julie Taylor repeatedly I doubt I'd opt for Chicago, either.

Good show. I hope it sticks around. I can't wait for East Dillon to crush Dillon next year and see the look on J.D's old man's face. Hey, maybe that won't happen, but I'll be watching either way.

ON DirecTV’s Channel 101 tonight at 9PM 'Friday Night Lights' is back!!!

http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2009/10/seven-reasons-to-watch-the-friday-night-lights-premiere.html

Seven reasons to watch the 'Friday Night Lights' premiere
If you're a fan of "Friday Night Lights," you probably only need one reason to tune in to the show's fourth-season premiere Wednesday (Oct. 28) on DirecTV.

That would be this: It's "Friday Night Lights," and it's one of the best dramas on television. Those of us without DirecTV will have to wait a frustratingly long time for the series to return on NBC -- don't expect it before late spring -- but the fact that it's back at all this season (for two seasons, no less) is a gift for the small but loyal fan base.

"The great irony is here we are, this low-rated show that has to scratch and claw to get on the air every season," series star Connie Britton said when I talked to her in August. "Then they were like, 'OK, in fact not only do you not have to do that, but go ahead and plan for two seasons.' Who gets to do that?"

Britton thinks knowing that they have two seasons in pocket will allow for "really specific writing and stories," and that shows up in the season premiere, which finds Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife, Tami (Britton), working on either side of a divided Dillon. Here are some other reasons to watch/anticipate the coming season.

East vs. West. Last season ended with the Dillon school district splitting in two, Eric getting fired from his coaching job at Dillon High and being offered the football-coach job at the about-to-reopen East Dillon. The premiere picks up just as school is starting, and it's quickly clear that East Dillon has a lot of catching up to do.

Britton: "It's going to give us a lot of stuff to play with. The thing that I just love about the writing and on our show is that all the conflict that evolves from that will be really subtle and layered. ... We're really going to be torn in this town we love, and it's going to really kind of blow everything we know as normal and familiar to smithereens."

A real underdog. The East Dillon Lions, as you might expect, are a pretty ragtag team as the season starts. Eric is going to have to do the best coaching job he's ever done just to keep the team in games. If you like watching Kyle Chandler do the fuming, lip-chewing thing he does when Coach is upset, you're in for a treat.

New characters ... The premiere introduces two new members of the cast: Michael B. Jordan as Vince Howard, a talented running back with a bit of a checkered past who gets a chance to play at East Dillon; and Madison Burge as Becky Sproles, a high-schooler who in the premiere meets Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) in a rather unusual way. Jurnee Smollett and Matt Lauria will join later in the season.

And old ones. In addition to Riggins, Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) will also be around for multiple episodes this season, and Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly) is scheduled to appear in two episodes.

Britton: "It's great that [the writers] can be organic and authentic to the school and not have these kids be there till they're 50. But at the same time, it's a small town, so they really can come back." She adds that while Adrianne Palicki won't appear this season as Tyra, there are plans to bring her back in season five.

Tim Riggins shirtless. Just sayin'.

Britton: "From what I hear he doesn't make it far out of Dillon. So yeah -- the ladies will be happy."

Peter Berg. With showrunner Jason Katims also committed to NBC's midseason show "Parenthood," Berg -- who directed the 2004 "Friday Night Lights" movie and developed the TV show, says he's going to be more involved with the series this season. He directed the season premiere.

We'll give the last word to Britton, talking about the show's new direction and how that changes Eric and Tami's relationship: "You know how we are. ... It's not like we're going to come to blows or anything -- I think you can quote me on that. But I imagine there will be sort of inherent inner conflicts. So I'm really looking forward to seeing how that unfolds."

1. I'm still angry over the presumption that the coach would be fired after 2 years which included a state championship (which it was implied Dillon hadn't won in a long time) and then a 2nd place finish which was accompanied by an all-time great comeback. It's preposterous. Not to mention a "top recruit" freshman HS QB, which is so unlikely it annoys me. Replacing a state title winning QB in the middle of the season by changing the offense? Child please.

2. That East Dillon will be competitive with (and likely win against) Dillon this year.

Still, I'm freaking pumped. Best show on TV.

Yeah I hear you and feel the same pain, but when freshman HS QB’s father is new rich man on block with a huge pull, what can anyone do? It is, what it is:D

It's preposterous. The premise of the show is a football-crazy town that will do anything for success. Shitcan the dude that's given them unparalleled success in the 2 years he's there because some guy with money has a kid who sucked in the big game? Unlikely.

I think the real answer is this “they (the producers)never expected the show to be picked up ever again” so said phuk it, lets Wright this into the script

Just an outstanding season premiere, can’t wait until the next episode:thumb:

A few thoughts
JD and his dad are in for a huge crash ‘n burn down the road
Forfeiting the game while down by 45 by Coach took me by surprise
The town will be split very soon

1. There's no way the coach would be coaching that shit ass East Dillon. NONE. He was a freaking big-time college assistant a year earlier!!! It's preposterous.

2. They 180 the JD character did is silly. He was polite, humble and awkward and now he's some party kid talking shit and douching it up? Doesn't jive. Also, Saracen- the former state champion QB and guy who pwn3d in the massive comeback after JD got pulled- would have major pull in that town and would be JD's daddy.

3. The new coach blowing off Buddy Garritty is his downfall.

There's a lot of promise for this season, though.

Don't forget about Mrs Coach at the coin toss. She called heads and won and took the ball.
, when the H/C wanted the opposite. I can see the Mrs Coach/Principal and the head coach at Dillon smacking heads a few times per episode. Can't wait for the next show.

Great premiere but the thought of Jeter having his way with Minka Kelly puts a damper on it.

That said, MD's and Paper's points are very well taken. Also, the inevitable rise to respectability of the hapless East Dillon team is going to be hard to believe. I assume that's where we're headed.

Yup. The trailer for next week showed the redistricting leading to ED getting the "star RB" for Dillon...but the problem is that Riggins was the RB of Dillon the year before, and the teams have played one game, so it's again a flawed premise to think that there's some huge star that we didn't know about.

Well this show closed out a few weeks ago.

I didn't like that coach not only turned down a chance to get a college gig but that he eneded up coaching a city team in Philly.

I mean this guy coached two different schools to state championships in Texas.

He could have wrote his own ticket but his wife got some dream job at fictional a private college in Philly so he gave it all up so she can pursue her career.

Texas coaching legend ends up at some city school in Philly, give me a break.

He was getting fed up with the Texas school mentality. It seems like he was at a prep school in Philly. I thought it was an outstanding show and I am very unhappy that its run its course. I looked forward to Wednesday nite at 9:00 PM.

Yeah, that was annoying as hell. He turns down a wicked D-I job in Fla? And the whole "wife becoming Dean" line was absurd. She goes from stay-at-home mom to counselor to principal to fired principal to counselor in 3 years and then BAM! Hot commodity for colleges? Child please.

My man is killin' it and getting offers left and right and he follows his wife's piddly administrative career? He took a team from not existing, to winning one game (over a national powerhouse) to the state title in 2 years! In Texas! Shit, Notre Dame has given bros the head gig for less.

Also, why was every freakin' game decided on the last play?

I've just started reading the book and am really enjoying it. It gives me exposure to a side of the States that we just don't get here; it's perfectly easy to get a picture of NYC, Boston and so on (especially as someone living in a massive city). However, somewhere like Odessa is a completely different world.
