Yes exciting isn't it?  :Eason:

Couldn't they just have taken a lead from the Pats?

announce them as a team the east vs the west.

After the last winter olympics and the couple's figure skating fix its hard to take this serious.

I stopped when I became a Momma. Can't have bongs and trays of weed everywhere with kids. Easy for me, had to anyway when I was pregnant. I don't even drink anymore. Never in my wildest dreams (or boringist dreams--at the time) did I thnk I'd ever be completley sober.

No more weed, alcohol, acid, shrooms, ecstacy and others that need not to be named for me!

Me either...If you had "Tommy will be sober when he's 30" in the pool...you won.

Anyhoo..I actually kinda liked the OC when I switched over @ 10...It wasn't completely filled with suckitude (save for Yoko), and it had Michael Shumacher's Ferrari doing donuts...a Peter Gabriel sighting...Athletes sparking their lighters and swaying to "Imagine" regardless of their country...and wrapped up by Pavorotti kicking MOLTO ass...It was...Impressive to say the least.

1st event is supposed to be Biathlon tomorrow @ 7AM.

Cross Country Skiing and Guns...cool cool...

Nothing TOO major going on tomorrow...Speed Skating at night I think...Women's Hockey...Ice Dancing maybe...

Only one I really want to see would be speed skating.

I'm such a sucker for the Olympics...They get me every time...

I loved watching the figure skating as a girl. It was hard to watch anything at my house besides racing, though. Mainly NHRA and Nascar. If you have any questions about racing from the 80's until the late 90's, I'm your girl.

As I grew, I was more of a Summer Olympics person. I always dreamed of going for softball. How cool would that be to win a gold medal? That means you are the best in the whole entire world at that particular thing. I'd wear mine all the time.
I'm the best, now watch out, ya bitches!

I can't say that I favor either of the two, now. I think there are some great things in both of them.

I really want to see the Skeleton this year. Those fools even go down head first. Oh hell no!

I never did mushrooms in my life, but I was looking for some when Yoko came out.

Here's a woman who should be an international pariah. She stole John Lennon away from his first wife, claimed she had no idea who he was, removed his male genital from his body and carried it around in her purse and thereby ruined cut the career of the greatest pop band in the history of the world down to seven measley years. Didn't anyone in that stadium remember the 4th side of The White Album?

That little speech she read would have been adorable if delivered by a 9 year old girl. From a 79 year old woman and the Janet Jones Gretzy of Rock & Roll, it was embarassing.

Taking fastpitch softball out of the olympics really pisses me off  A purely anti-American move (along with baseball). I'm a fastpitch junkie going back to the years when my daughter traveled around the east coast playing in tournaments. It's more of a sport than most of the other crap thrown in.

Barely watched any of the opening ceremonies. On the plus side, Comcast added a high def channel, UniversalHD, which is broadcasting events without the fluff pieces. My wife and I watched some of the Finland-Germany women's ice hockey. My wife is a Finn, so that caught her interest.

Jeez,

Peg, pookie, RG & Athol...thanks for having my 6 on this one. At least I think you do...It's hard to focus on anything other than pookie's Stacey Keibler avatar. Up until two weeks ago, I had no idea this woman existed...but damn, she's hotter than a Dallas sidewalk.

I have no earthly idea what I did to cheese off Thomas...it's like that having that kid who sits on the other side of your homeroom, the one you've never talked to before, come across the room one day and tell you he hates your guts. What do you do? Reevaluate the way you've been living your life, or just say "Huh?" and forget about it.

Or go with the philosophy that served me well when I dealt with hecklers in one of comedy's many Hell Rooms: "If you liked me, I'd friggin' kill myself."

Now, back to the Winter Olympics thread. Oh wait. Is the answer Brian Epstein?

I've been a Stacey Keibler mark for many years. I loved her "Miss Hancock" gimmick in WCW. She played the uptight, frumpy, enforcer of the standards of decency. Somehow, I always suspected that behind those Coke-bottle specs, underneath that perfectly tight librarian hair bun, was a hot babe waiting to come out.

When she went to WWF/WWE, she became one of their top divas. Not much in the boob department (although they are quite perky), but those legs....

The fact that you've just become aware of her in the past few weeks raises some suspicions. You didn't, by chance, get introduced to her on that "Dancing With the Stars" show did you? If so, you might as well upload that picture of Johnny Weir to your avatar right now.

Me, I'm going to hang out with thomas144. We're gonna light candles and sway to and fro to Yoko Ono music.

Dan Pires alerted me to Ms Keibler with his avatar. I had no idea who she was either, but she's now my new theme. I googled her and about 15 minutes later got yelled at by Mrs Pookie for ruining the keyboard.

So I watched the half-pipe stuff tonight cuz there was nothing else on (sorry, but the Olympics really don't interest me), and after Shaun White won the gold and was talking to Costas, did he not look or sound completely on another planet? Whether it was just the shock of winning a gold medal in the Olympics at 19 or what, but he didn't look very into it.

And Bode Miller got the shite kicked out of him by that wicked little beast called "karma." Hey Bode, maybe you should've gotten a little sloshed, you might have won a medal then!

I personally think that John Lennon started going downhill when he took off his leather jacket and grew a beard.

When Ono came along it was really pathetic, because it didn't seem like there was anything she wouldn't do to influence him and the cool rebel quickly turned into a Fischer Price pull toy.

Unfortunately, there are still millions of people around that were hoodwinked when he came up with one decent little tune about peace and thought he was still a genius.

That makes one good tune out of several hundred that he did after the Beatles broke up largely over that weirdo Yoko.

He WAS a genius back in the day, but by the time Ono got through with him he had forgotten 95% about everything he ever learned about music.

I'll stop short of thanking Mark David Chapman for shooting the guy, but it hands me a laugh when anyone gets bent out of shape over their percieved mistreatment of Yoko, who instead of being the artist and visionary she pretended to be -- was really just a gold-digging, talentless shrew who got her talons into my boyhood idol and rode him into the dirt.

If I thought Thomas was seriously ripping on IG, then I'd try my personal best to make him permanently disappear from the planet by grinding him into cyberdust everytime he pulls something like this, but instead I just sit back and laugh.

You can't take anything Thomas posts seriously.

This Lennon/Ono stuff will land this thread in the political forum soon. I've never been a big fan of Lennon myself. I'm not so much offended that he ditched his first wife, that stuff happens all the time, but his treatment of his first child (Julian) was inexcusable so my respect level for the man is pretty low.

The "one decent tune" always reminded me of a communist Utopian ideal set to music. I think I'm too much the capitalist.

Back on Topic...

The Olympic Downhill is one of my favorite sporting events.

One Shot, no do-overs, get to the bottom as fast as you can without crashing. I know it was a French guy who won it but the proformance was wild. Cutting 7/10's off the top run when you go last was rediculous.

Roger that.

I was on a ski trip that day and spent a great day skiing and settled back in the motel with a case of beer and a bag weed and watched Klammer tear it up that night with my buddies.

I even tried to ski like him after that, but I don't think it really made much difference.

One of my business trips to Canada, I had a hotel with about 5 channels. I was apparently up there during some National Curling Championship or something as 3 of the channels had coverage for about 5 straight hours. Actually, I think it was listed as Yu. F. His name was Yu Fengtong. Though if they followed Chinese protocol he would have been listed as F. Yu as the surname is first.

You fall flat on your face being thrown during ice dancing. You get up, call a timeout, go over to the bench, dust yourself off, head back out, stand around waiting for the song to catchup, pick up where you left off, finish your show and GET A SILVER MEDAL???????

Pairs, not Ice Dancing. Ice Dancing sucks.

Dude, she's a badass. 5' maybe like 80 lbs, takes a digger into the ice on her f-ing knee from about 12 feet up (Try doing that with no kneepads...)

With the new scoring system, messing up on one element only costs you a point; and they only screwed up on the landing part of it, and got all the rotations in (No one had ever tried a throw-quad before). Everything else was virtually flawless...and the rest of the teams pretty much outright sucked except for the Russian team.

She's a bad mother-****er...I'm glad they got silver and approve of the scoring there.

I'm not questioning her toughness. I bet she wouldn't fumble with a pulled hammy....

See, unlike singles skating...it's not all about the (throw) jumps. (She landed a Double/Triple combo right after the restart, and landed another throw triple after); there's like a million diffrerent elements Pairs are judged on (lifts, side by side spins, side by side jumps/combos), where in Singles, it's "try to jumps as many times as possible and land them all".

Besides, like I mentioned before...only the Russian Pair was even on the same level as those 2. The other pairs all had their moments where they just flat out sucked, missed jumps, etc. There wasn't another pair who could claim they got screwed out of a medal.

Hey Tommy,

I know we will "agree to disagree" but I am watching the "after hours" olympic highlight show.....

That Hammond guy is interviewing the Canadians who got jobbed four years ago (and then got additional golds issued to them).....

Anyway, he asked them why someone who falls flat should still get a chance for a medal, and here is what the guy (jamie sale's partner) said....

"The Russians are so good that it pushes everyone to take chances. But a skiier who goes too fast out of the gate and misses a flag is out, its over. I don't think they should have been allowed to continue....."

WOW....

Interest that a guy within the sport would make my point for me, but.....

The "tuck rule" isn't the most popular rule either...but as you can tell in my sig, "Rulez iz Rulez"

i think we're talking about 2 different things...Should you be able to "call timeout" have a good cry and comeback and have a do-over? I dunno...but Assuming that's the rule; not landing one element in a routine with about 65 scorable ones shouldn't necessarilly disqualify you from winning a medal.

Jamie Sale is very, very hot indeed. She has a glow factor. I might consider stalking her.

Since this is the defacto Olympics thread I'm going to give some big ups to the Women's snowboarding team for rocking the Alps and taking a few medals, but beyond that-- I just found it really refreshing that the snowboarders seem to have a different culture.

They try their hardest and do their best and seem to really pull for each other. You didn't see that American girl who had a great run but made one mistake to finish fourth dissolve in a puddle of tears like the Ice Princesses do frequently, sometimes even when they win.

I found it a very exciting and entertaining event and I don't know squat about it.

The American girls were even high fiving the girl from Norway that took the silver. In what other sport do you see that happen?

Nobody seems to have more fun than the 'boarders.

Bottom line is that sports are SUPPOSED to be about fun, aren't they?

The contrast between them whooping it up and the heavy drama of the figure skaters is glaring.

I agree they should all get along, that bugged me about sports, how everyone on the other team was a "bitch".

But I think ice skating is different. They start training when they are like 4, give up their lives, can't indulge in sweets, or go out and party with their friends. All the people I know who snowboard started in thier teenage years and are still able to do whatever they want. They didn't sacrifice and train their whole lives for one moment in the future. Not to mention how much all the lessons and stuff costs.

Curling calendar causing a stir

http://www.tsn.ca/curling/news_story.asp?id=141561

Canadian Press

10/31/2005 10:33:06 PM

Women's curling is sure to receive a lot more exposure this year, thanks to a new international calendar that features nude and scantily clad female curlers.

The calendar is the brainchild of Ana Arce, a photographer who skipped the Andorran women's team for three seasons before moving to Spain this year.

''I think it's going to change the image of the sport which is not so nice,'' Arce, who also poses in the calendar, told The Canadian Press. ''I've been playing for eight years and there are so many beautiful girls playing and nobody knows it.

''I doubt that anyone is going to be shocked and everybody's going to enjoy that and like it.''

All proceeds will be split between the teams of the curlers who pose in the calendar, called the Ana Arce Team Sponsorship Calendar 2006.

Arce contacted only women she knew personally through her years in curling, including two Canadians: Melanie Robillard of Ottawa and Lynsay Ryan of Kelowna, B.C., the daughter of two-time world champion skip and 2006 Olympic hopeful Pat Ryan.

Ryan, a 21-year-old student at Hamilton's McMaster University, found herself in July posing in a see-through sarong in the forests of Fussen, Germany.

''I sent him (her father) an e-mail,'' Ryan said with a laugh. ''I thought it might be better if he read about it and had time to think about it before he replied.''

Arce met Lynsay Ryan at a curling clinic in Germany and was surprised the Canadian agreed to be part of it.

''I thought she was going to say no because being Canadian I know it's more difficult,'' she said. ''I think things are different for European girls.

''We are more open here - a little less shy I think. But she said yes and she just wanted to check the pictures and everything was OK.''

The 12 models represent curling teams from Denmark, Italy, Spain, England, Poland, Germany and Canada.

''Some of the girls showed a little bit more, like breasts, because they wanted to,'' Arce said of the black-and-white photos. ''But it is very, very tasteful.''

The calendar isn't the first of its kind. The Canadian women's rugby, water polo and cross-country ski teams all have produced similar calendars. On the men's front, there has been beefcake calendars from the men of Australian Rules Football and the Stade Francais rugby team in Paris.

Some prominent Canadian female curlers had no problem with the calendar but weren't interested in participating.

''I couldn't, I'm too shy,'' said Jennifer Jones, the defending Scott Tournament of Hearts champion from Winnipeg. ''It's very European.

''If the right people want to do it I think it's kind of a fun idea and innovative and hopefully it will get curling some publicity.''

News of the calendar, which will cost about $25 Cdn, came a little bit close to home for former Canadian champion Cathy King.

''Somebody came up to our team just last week and said we should do one of those,'' she said with a chuckle. ''I started laughing and said you three go ahead. I'm not doing it.

''I said to our friend who suggested it: `Get lost, not a chance.'''

It's not the first time the idea of nudity and curling has hit the news. In April 2004, former world champion Colleen Jones lamented the problem of getting publicity for women's curling with plans to split the men's and women's championships into separate events.

''I think the women are going to have to curl naked in order to get people out there,'' she said at the time. ''I'm not kidding.

''You're going to have to hope for an Anna Kournikova to come along to really jazz it up.''

The calendar does just that for the sport, said Arce.

''This proves that curlers are athletes,'' she said. ''Strong but graceful, and of course very beautiful.''

News about the calendar seemed to catch Jones off guard Monday.

''Those words were very prophetic don't you think?,'' said the six-time Canadian champion, who noted finding a way to compete in countries where curling is not popular can be a serious challenge.

''There's a part of me that can say if you thought it was going to cover the cost of your season than maybe you'd do the same thing and become Miss January,'' she said. ''Image and sex appeal in women's sport are still very much how many women athletes are popularized.''

Included in the calendar is Austrian skip Claudia Toth, who previously said no to the German edition of Playboy.

''I loved the whole idea behind it,'' said Toth. ''It seems like one of the very few possibilities to make curling more popular in Europe - especially Austria.''

Anything that brings attention to the sport is a good idea, said defending world and Brier champion Randy Ferbey of Edmonton.

''Good for them,'' he said. ''Anytime you bring publicity to the sport is good. Every other sport has done it.

''I don't think there's anything wrong with it and I'll definitely have a look to see if I know anybody in there. It's just something fun to talk about over a few drinks.''

The fact that his former teammate Pat Ryan's daughter is included in the calendar wasn't lost on Ferbey.

''Obviously I can bug Pat about that now a little bit,'' he said. ''I'll probably put her picture up on the wall somewhere in the locker-room.''

For more information on the calendar, go to www.thecurlingnews.com.

-------------------------------------

I don't know what I found more surprising: this article, or the fact that Canada has it's own national curling newspaper.

One thing I was not surprised to find out: the calendar is temporarily sold out. (http://www.thecurlingnews.com/calendar.html)

TORINO, Italy -- Eric Heiden sat in the stands and, halfway through Saturday night's 1,000-meter speedskating final, thought about 1980.

He has a single memory that stands out from his five-gold-medal performance in Lake Placid. He can't quite explain why, but it's not a memory from the oval, or the medal stand, or even anything celebratory.

Heiden finds himself, again and again, back in a tunnel leading away from the snow-encrusted ice and down toward the locker room. It was the day he broke the world record in the 10,000-meter discipline. It was the day after the Miracle on Ice. Heiden remembers how long that hallway was, and how it led away from all the lights, toward a door.

"I was leaving a bright place and going into a dark tunnel," Heiden said Saturday. "And I'm wondering, 'What's in store?' "

Heiden was the man of the moment, and still he left it behind even as it happened to him. He sped forward, into the unknown. And Saturday, as he relived that feeling again, Heiden looked out at the rink here in Italy, and a solitary man in a ski hat floated by. The man clasped his hands behind his back and moved slowly, not looking anywhere but straight ahead, into his own tunnel.

Moments later, that man took off his hat and strode into history, becoming the first black to win an individual gold medal in the Winter Games. And of course, Shani Davis did it by coming out of nowhere, going from 25th after one split, to seventh after two, to first at the finish.

Not everyone likes Shani Davis. Some think he was selfish for not joining the team pursuit race the day before the event he's dreamt of winning since he was 8 years old. Others think he's simply difficult, or too bitter. Others still don't like his mother, saying she's too involved. When asked after Davis' performance whether he's happy for the gold medalist, Chad Hedrick complimented only silver medalist Joey Cheek. "I'm happy for Joey," Hedrick said.

To which we should reply: Whatever. The soap opera is for today, but history is forever.

History will not remember Shani Davis for a specific decision he made or for any personality quirks he has. Nor should we. How many remember the disturbance Heiden caused? He said the Olympics were overrated. He said, "Heck, gold medals, what can you do with them? I'd rather get a nice warmup suit. That's something I can use. Gold medals just sit there. When I get old, maybe I could sell them if I need the money."

That didn't go over any better in 1980 than Davis' outspokenness does in 2006. But who cares? Dozens or hundreds or even thousands of African-American kids will put on skates because of Shani Davis, and that is so much more of a legacy to America than joining one extra race. All due respect to Hedrick, but Davis goes stride for stride with the Texan in contribution to Team USA, and he might even be moving ahead. Perhaps Heiden's modern-day complement is not Hedrick, but Davis.

That's especially so when we have people like Bryant Gumbel telling us to "try not to laugh when someone says these are the world's greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention."

That comment is also for today. Davis' story, from a childhood where he was made fun of for wearing tights, to his place in sports lore, will go on. Mr. Gumbel will talk his entire career and say less than Davis did Saturday without a word. And we reporters asked about all the hot topics, from Hedrick to Davis' mother to the controversy over his decision not to race in the pursuit. Davis rolled his eyes. Good for him.

Rumors flew that Davis would blow off the press conference, but he didn't. He mentioned his past hardships, but he also said, "It's not a hard thing for me. I love what I do." He took no opportunity to snipe or whine or lash out. And there were several opportunities to be had. "Regardless of color," he said, "I want to be the best I can be."

Asked if he thought his achievement would create a big stir, Davis said, "I think it would be if this were a bigger sport. It's what people make of it."

Let's hope people make a lot of it.

There is a long tunnel between the ice and the locker room here in Torino, as well. Davis walked it Saturday, alone in his thoughts. Maybe he'll remember that walk as long as Heiden did. Maybe not. But just like speedskating's first American legend, Davis has walked away from the petty trifles of the moment and into a darker, quieter place that none of us can reach -- a place that cannot be touched by words.

The only rocks that can possible score have to be a least touching the outter-most blue ring or inside it...

Then the closest to the middle gets one point. If that same team has the second closest they get two points, if that same team has the third closest, they get three, etc....

Even if you have five rocks inside the rings, including the closest, if the other team has the second closest, you only get one point....

Kinda like Bocce Ball...

One thing that confuses people is the different colored rings. It doesn't matter which ring the rock is in. It's one point.

From what I've seen, Sweden has pretty much proven themselves the Denver Broncos of the women's hockey tournament. They weren't supposed to beat the US, and it's showing going up against Canada. This is about as cruise control as it gets.

For a regular game, sure, but we're talking the Gold Medal game here, and Sweden looked like a high school team playing against the NHL All Star team.

I don't know if this has already been posted, but did anyone watch the snowboard cross this weekend? I'd never seen that before. It's pretty cool because it's kind of like a roller derby in that they can bump and cut each other off. And, if one person goes down, they usually take out a few others.

Short Track Speed Skating is even more like roller derby IMO.

Schools closed for mens curling final (http://www.cbc.ca/nl/story/nf_burke_schools_20060223.html)

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is closing schools early Friday, so students can watch the Canadian men's curling team compete for a gold medal.

Education Minister Joan Burke said Thursday that schools across the province will be dismissed at lunchtime Friday so they can watch the St. John's based Brad Gushue rink compete in the Olympic curling final.

Burke said buses will be ready to take children home early.

"It's a historic moment for Newfoundland and Labrador," she said.

"[We] certainly want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to see the game. It's exciting for the young people of this province."

The Gushue rink faces Finland in the curling final at 1 p.m. NT, 12:30 p.m. in most of Labrador.

The game will be carried on CBC Television.

Burke said while schools could have arranged to have children watch the game on television, buses would have arrived during the final ends.

"Schoolchildren just can't walk out of school and declare a holiday. We have to do that for them," Burke said.

Can we just let Newfoundland just drift off to sea and end this thing?

Streaker Runs Across Ice in Curling Match
By Associated Press
Fri Feb 24, 7:07 PM

PINEROLO, Italy - The men's bronze medal match Friday was interrupted by a streaker. Midway through the United States' 8-6 win over Britain, a man wearing what appeared to be a strategically placed rubber chicken ran onto one of the covered sheets of ice not being used in that session.

He danced around for a bit but never tried to approach any of the players.

Curlers probably feel a little safer than most athletes _ it's hard for intruders to run across ice, especially if they're naked. John Shuster said he never felt in danger.

"Olympic security's been amazing here," he said. "We weren't worried at all."

A couple of security officials from the venue hovered near the streaker for several seconds before finally covering him and leading him away.

Never managed to catch any coverage of this, but I have to ask. Did he have Golden Palace.com tatooed on his back?

It was a great game. Three Finns broke sticks in the 3rd period  The first one right off the opening faceoff leading directly to the winning goal.

Finland did beat the Russians. The Finns and Russians have a very long historic dislike for each other, including a war for survival when the Soviets invaded Finland in 1940. My father-in-law was a ski trooper for the Finnish army during that war.

It was a very strong tournament. I loved the open ice, the speed and stick handling. I hope the NHL continues to shut down for future Olympics.
